I graduated from UCF in 2005. I honestly don't remember UCF playing Mercer in anything. I didn't start watching their games until their final years in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Actually UCF was far more successful in that conference than the CUSA. We made 4 NCAA Tourneys out of that conference and none in the 7 years since. Soon it'll be even harder for us moving to the Big East.

I did go to quite a few Stetson basketball games as a kid though since the school isn't too far from me. I do recall some of those games being against Mercer. These days without UCF it seems like Belmont is owning men's basketball in the Atlantic Sun.

Wow... already $17 mill in legal fees. I can't believe the school paid legal fees of $1.6 mill for the defense of their own disgraces former officers like Spanier, Schultz and Curley.

Penn State University has paid out almost $17 million to cover legal bills, public relations fees and other costs related to the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal, the university said on its website on Tuesday.

Nearly $16.8 million in costs through June 30 were broken down as almost $10 million for internal investigations and crisis communications, close to $4 million for university legal services and defense, and nearly $1.2 million in other expenses.

The total also included about $1.6 million for legal defense of the school's officers, including former Penn State President Graham Spanier, who was fired when the scandal broke in November 2011, former university vice president Gary Schultz and former athletic director Tim Curley, both of whom are charged with perjury, accused of lying to a grand jury about the case.

Sandusky, a former assistant football coach, was convicted in June of sexually abusing 10 boys over 15 years, including incidents in the university locker room. He is in jail awaiting sentencing.

The bills were not paid by student tuition, taxpayer funds or donations. Instead, the costs have been covered by insurance and interest revenue from loans extended by the university, according to the university website.

One of the keys to recruiting, most coaches will say, is to find out who the parent is that will ultimately have the biggest influence on what college their son will pick. In the case of Clemson and No. 1 overall recruit Robert Nkemdiche, that may mean there's work to be done in convincing his mother that the Tigers are the team for the highly regarded defensive end.

"His decision is not final," Beverley Nkemdiche told ESPN. "He's just a teenager, and people are forgetting that. We had never discussed Clemson, and I am unhappy with Clemson. I'm not there, so I don't know for certain, but I feel like Robert was pressured into this decision."

The Loganville (Ga.) five-star committed to the Tigers on June 14 but has many expecting he will eventually open his recruitment back up at some point before Signing Day. One driving factor in Clemson landing Nkemdiche was the fact that two of his high school teammates, running back Wayne Gallman and best friend and defensive back David Kamara, are committed to the school. Ole Miss -- where brother Denzel is a redshirt freshman -- Alabama, Georgia and several others were programs the top prospect considered before making his pledge.

"I'm going to Clemson," Robert Nkemdiche maintained in the piece. "I want to make an impact and in three years go to the NFL. That's what I'm going to do. You can put that in bold, too."

One complicating factor is the family situation with Nkemdiche. His father, Sunday, is a doctor and his mother is an elected official in Nigeria and has lived in the country since the younger Nkemdiche entered high school.

Clemson currently has the No. 11 recruiting class in the country for 2013. Nkemdiche has said numerous times he will take official visits to other schools.

I don't like when a parent tries over influencing a recruits decision. It really rubs me the wrong way.

The Big 12 finalized their new TV deal with ESPN/ABC and Fox this morning. The terms of the deal have been known since May and the deal is worth $2.6 billion over 13 years, with each school receiving $20 million per year. Under the deal the football schedule will be shared by ESPN/ABC and Fox while the men's basketball schedule will be exclusively on ESPN/ABC. Overall it's a pretty good deal for a conference that nearly imploded last year.

This is the part that peaked my interests:

The deal includes a "grant of rights" agreement, meaning if a Big 12 school leaves for another league in the next 13 years, that school's media rights, including revenue, would remain with the Big 12 and not its new conference.

Apparently the PAC-12 and Big Ten also have this built into their media deal. I understand this is supposed to deter poaching, to what end? If everyone locks in, does that mean the Big 12 stays at 10 because there is no one else to get?

Looks like its to prevent poaching and try to keep the conference alive especially with the SEC targeting the Longhorns

Biggest ever. It really depends on how long FSU plays their starters. If they get pulled really early when it's like 35-0 they might have a tough time covering that. If they keep the starters in till it's 49-0 or so they can easily cover.

I can't really fault FSU for this game. From what I've read they had West Virginia scheduled originally, but due to conference changes WVA pulled out.

Yeah, Florida State supposedly called 80 FBS schools in February when WVU pulled out of the game and couldn't find anyone with an open date, so they had to fill the game with an FCS team.

I highly doubt FSU makes it to 71. Their offense isn't built to be the same quick scoring team as the Cowboys.

If it's a neutral game, someone forgot to tell the grounds crew:

No worries. Once mom comes to visit the campus she will approve. He has 2 team mates with another possibly coming and his headcoach was roommates with Dabo at 'Bama. He's a Tiger.

This year Utah is picked to finish anywhere from 11-1 to 9-4 by all of the national press. Their D is sound and is one picked to 1st-2nd in the Pac12 again... but everything will come down to their QB. See the above post for how injured prone he is.

Utah does has an elite 11 freshman QB this year backing up Wynn with Hays being 3rd string. So they have some hope when Wynn goes down this year.

Belmont is gone now too. But Mercer isn't good enough to move anywhere better (we're actually the last remaining charter member).

This is the UCF/Mercer game I will always remember. It was my freshman year, and we set the NCAA record for biggest turn around in a single season (6-23 to 23-6), and then you beat us in the conference semi-finals and we ended up with nothing

From what I've read Mercer is a private school with barely 5,000 students. It's really tough for a school like that to be very successful in a Division 1 sport.

UCF has continued to explode when it comes to size and number of students. Every time I return to campus for football games there are several new buildings. The campus of UCF is more like a city in itself. Total student body is nearly 60,000, one of the largest in the nation. Our athletic teams just have not progressed as quickly as I'd hoped. We're improving in sports like basketball and football, but it's taking time. The move to the Big East should help some. Only in baseball do we really matter nationally thus far.

Texas A&M has decided to give themselves two more national championships as they join the SEC:

The Aggies appropriately claimed the national title for 1939, when they went 11-0 and finished No. 1 in most of the polls. That championship, in addition to conference titles, long has been acknowledged outside Kyle Field.

But the display has been changed this offseason.

National championships were added for the 1919 and 1927 seasons.

The circumstances of those championships are certainly open for debate.

In 1919, Harvard and Illinois were regarded as the national champions among the various rankings. However, the Aggies, who finished 10-0 that season, are making their claim based on the National Championship Foundation, which was formed in 1980 and voted on past champions. The group awarded A&M a share of the title in a three-way tie with Notre Dame and Harvard.

Seem silly? The same National Championship Foundation awarded four schools a national title in 1993 and five schools in 1991.

In 1927, the Aggies went 8-0-1, and Notre Dame and Pittsburgh were regarded as splitting the national championship. However, the Aggies were retroactively crowned No. 1 by a mathematical ranking system developed in 1935 that ran the results from the 1929 season.

Edit: Apparently Texas A&M has added two conference titles as well:

The real head scratchers are the conference titles. In 1997, A&M made it to the Big 12 title game before getting slaughtered by Nebraska by a score of 54-15. In 2010, the Aggies finished tied for the Big 12 south title, but did not represent the division in the Big 12 championship game.

By my math — and by no means should you use this as a source — that equates to [/carries the five] roughly zero conference championships in ’97 and ’10. More or less.
