There won't be 4k physical media for some time, but its 4 times the size compared to a 1080P file. BD's use up to 48 Mpbs for their playback. Hollywood uses a maximum of 250 Mbits/sec for a JPEG2000 compressed 4K image as a example. Even using the highest bitrate of 250 Mbit/sec, a two-hour 4k film would be 225GB for the image only, excluding audio or sub pictures. So not quite as bad as it seems.

With 4K it's also important to remember that despite the displays being shown at CEDIA this year, you are currently limited to 24p and 30p for inputs, with no 60p frame rate and no 3D for 4K. The 4K/8K home standard is currently in draft form, and HDMI needs to be updated to a new standard as well before they can even consider a new disc format, as it relies on both of those. That's probably 6-12 months away at least I would imagine because of that.

Oppo likely can't wait another 3-4 years to make another player while not having 1080p and 5.1 in Netflix or other features. How useful 4K scaling is up to the end user (I currently don't see that much use for it, but people that saw the LG 4K in person were not huge fans of the scaler in it, so I could be wrong), but other features that Oppo added are useful. I know the inputs to be used at a DAC are the main feature I'm after, but they didn't give me all the details on that.

Since I'm not sure if it was mentioned earlier, the 103 is going to be $499 we were told (I was at the dinner pictured above), but the 105 price isn't set at this point. Since I have a 93 and an 83SE I think I'll get myself a 105, as the DAC inputs really intrigue me.

Exactly. OPPO is a niche manufacturer. They don't get the benefit of producing millions of units like a Samsung, Sony or Panasonic would. If you want mass market prices, you have to buy a mass market player. If you want quality from a company like OPPO, you have to be willing to pay for it. If you don't perceive the quality difference (or don't care), buy the mass market player.

I agree with John FWIW.

Especially given that I surmise the 103 will be priced at or about the same as the 93, I'm wondering if my Cinavia "paranoia" makes going ahead and getting a refurb 93 a good idea. 4k is not practically useful for me in the next 12 months during which I'd use the player before looking to perhaps upgrade again.

If I read this correctly, the MHL HDMI port is only on the front of the device which means if I want to plug in my Roku stick, it will display it sticking out on my component shelf where anyone can by and pull it out and walk off with it. This will be an eye sore.

Thats for HDMI not MHL HDMI but maybe they will make some for the latter.

Anyone can walk off with it? How often do you have strangers you don't trust in your house?

And from the photos of most systems I've seen on this site, the systems themselves are generally eyesores. One little stick isn't going to make much difference.

Cinavia will be present with all BD players released after Feb 2012. Both the 103, and 105 are required to incorporate this DRM as they ship much later then this date. Its not a playback problem that you would audibly notice with legit media. It will be more challenging to correctly use media converted to files. DVD/Blu-ray ISO's are also not something that BD players will support due to BD industry rules.

If you did have a copy of media or file protected by Cinavia it would show up in 20 minutes by silencing the audio and a message like this appears on your screen: “Audio outputs temporarily muted. Do not adjust the playback volume. The content being played is protected by Cinavia™ and is not authorized for playback on this device. For more information, see http://www.cinavia.com. "

Its not a region specific DRM, its more used to defeat copies of Blu-rays by placing the Cinavia signal in specific audio tracks of same media. So if you are just defeating the region lock of the Blu-ray I would say no, based on everything I've seen online.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the BDP-95 had a more advanced audio DAC than the BDP-93, right? Will that be the same between the BDP-103 and BDP-105?

It most certainly will and added to that from what I read will also have some type of input to use it as a DAC for other sources.

Yes, the BDP-105 will use new designed CCA's. Here's the BDP-103 inside view, and decoder CCA.
