I was going to wait until part 2's release day to watch part 1, but I might as well just watch it now.

What are you talking about? Winter 2013 would be January through March of next year, not a whole year from now.

Anyway, I just got done watching it and enjoyed it immensely. I especially loved how the music gave it an 80's action movie feel, which felt very appropriate. And even though it only covers half of the storyline, it still felt complete on its own.
