Just got back from Dredd 3D. Thought it was very entertaining! Slow-motion Special effects were excellent. Fully intend to get this on Blu-ray 3D when it is released.

Been a fan of Karl Urban ever since he did an amazing job playing McCoy.

He was a stand out character in Lord of the Rings. Also saw him live at the 2005 Comic Con for his promotion with The Rock, for Doom, which he did a good job in. He was good in Priest 3D also. Great job in Dredd included.

How accurate would someone who read the comics describe Dredd 3D? Does it capture the essence of the comic?

ooohhh, cause I thought the 3D overall was outstanding - the director and the DP really knew how to film in 3D and use it effectively. I thought the image quality was very interesting in that while the whole film was pretty much sharp as a tack, some ultra dark scenes had a graininess, which I think might have been either filmed as such, or DI'ed into the film - some bluray pundits will obviously have issue with the grain

Just got back from it. Really enjoyed the movie. The 3D as some have said was very off and on. When it was good it was really good, with some incredible effects. Too bad it wasn't like that the entire movie. Those incredible 3D moments were too few I thought. I was hoping for a huge 3D effect climax, but they didn't really push it at the end much.

The biggest disappointment was no Hobbit or Silent Hill trailers.
Maybe I'll get to see The Hobbit trailer when I see Silent Hill next month.

However, they did show one for "Oz The Great And Powerful." That one looked pretty cool. Very colorful fantasy.

Cool. The ending
[Show spoiler]I'd say began when those rogue cops went after Dredd and Anderson, them being the official boss bad guys, as Magdeline (mama) didn't put up any fight other than her threat which Dredd wasn't falling for, but she sure did. I love how at the end he says after nothing happens, "Yeah", knowing she was only bluffing.

That's too bad they didn't show Silent Hill or Hobbit (trailer 2) 3D, those are awesome trailers for 3D. I didn't see them online in 3D yet for some reason.

I'd like to see Sam Raimi's Oz 3D trailer.

I think it captures it a lot better than the Stallone film, that's for sure.

Judge Dredd is complicated because it's been around for decades. It's like with Batman, the Adam West show is as accurate to Batman as the Christopher Nolan films depending on the source.

I believe Dredd has had the same writer for its entire run, so it stays consistent. But there's a lot of escalation and the stories get pretty bizarre.

I think Dredd 3D was very good at capturing the core of Judge Dredd and Mega-City One. I'd compare it to Batman Begins. There's a lot more of that world to explore(robots, aliens, mutants, Judge Death) but this film did a great job at introducing Dredd and Anderson.
It got the tone right. It manages to treat its ideas with maturity while not taking itself too seriously and being able to joke about itself. They treat Dredd exactly how he is in the stories, where you know he takes his ideas too far(he's essentially a fascist) but you'll often find yourself on his side in certain situations.

I really hope we get a sequel because there's so much more of this universe to explore and we only got to see a little bit of Dredd as a character. I'd hope that a sequel would explore and challenge the character's own beliefs about the law while also introducing us to some of the crazier baddies of Mega City One.

My theater was strange in that they showed us Silent Hill in 2D, and then showed up The Hobbit in 3D. Why wouldn't they just show all the 3D movies in 3D?

So disappointed this is bombing stateside!! finally we get a Dredd movie worthy of the title!! Think the memory of the Stallone disaster is preying on peoples minds. A friend of mine thought they had just converted the old Dredd into 3d.
Also at my local theatre, they didn't run it in 2d???

That sounds cool. Thanks for the detailed comparison of the Judge Dredd comic.
It's disappointing we likely won't get a Dredd sequel unless an independent smaller studio funds it and it goes directly to cable TV or video, which can be just as good as theatrical, as has been the recent trend for many high profile movie stars (doing direct to video feature films).

I'd really like to see a Dredd 2 with Karl Urban, but that is dependent on home video sales and foreign box office.

Movie theater audiences can be very picky and often times say, "I'll wait till it's on video", which is their right, provided they're buying it, and not choosing to get free copies (which doesn't support the filmmaker's efforts).

It's kind of like the reception Priest 3D got in 2011, also based on a comic. It's a niche title without a AAA movie star line up, and even though vampires are poplular and all (Dracula, Twilight, Underworld), just as super heroes are a popular genre (Avengers, Batman), but the rating R, and the gory, violent content will mostly appeal only to diehard action/sci fi/comic book fans.

That's my best guess anyway as to why it seemed only a few thousand or so of us really cared to see it in theaters. 6.2 million isn't the worst considering the lowest US opening of all time was around $447,000 dollars for that 2012 movie about the Huggables and the Balloon Ride Movie or something.

The real problem is, I don't see the box office for Dredd 3D overseas yet, which is where Resident Evil Retribution made a huge % of it's money. If they get it overseas in more theaters if not already, there is still hope.

I'll do what I can to support this film. I might catch it again in 3D, and I'm definitely buying the 3D Blu-ray.

I can't see this being like Kick-Ass, because it had a larger budget and a smaller first weekend. But I really really wish we'd see a sequel.
It disappoints me that a film like Clash of the Titans that has a way larger budget, but was still pretty boring(IMO) and had terrible converted 3D, was still able to get a sequel(that still has converted 3D) even with its poor box office(it still did better than Dredd sadly).

Dredd has awesome action scenes, a good script and it has some nice *native* 3D. But Lionsgate put so little effort in promoting the film, and it's so unlikely to get a sequel now

I can only imagine the places we'd go with a Dredd sequel. Dredd was faithful, but it was relatively small in scale compared to what's in the comics. For example, here's a list of some of his best stories http://io9.com/5944097/top-11-essent...-dredd-stories
If they were to tackle just one of those stories, it'd be amazing as a standalone film and as a sequel.

Alex garland toyed with the idea of doing the dark Judges but decided on a story centred around Dredd & what he was all about which i thought they done brilliantly!!
He did say if the movie done well it would be a trilogy with the dark judges being the third

I'm pretty sure it opened really strong at # 1 in the U.K., which I thought was a pretty big deal considering that's where the comics were written in the U.K.. The Brits must have really loved it at least

Most trekkies would agree that he captured McCoy perfectly!

I can't wait to see Dredd, but only really go to films I can take my boy too. So this will be a movie night for me and my wife when the blu comes out.

Yes, definitely for an R rated crowd. It earned its rating.

Thanks for the info. That would've been cool. I agree, the marketing was limited, I only saw the trailer on TV one time, but it was a great trailer.
