But some people like the theatrical releases over the extended versions. For Lord of the Rings, I think they both have their strengths.

Yep, I like both cuts in the LOTR trilogy. Choice is a good thing

I have to agree with this. It's one of the few franchises that I've held onto my theatrical edition DVDs after purchasing the special extended edition (the fact that the special features were not carried over helped too). But I really think the theatrical cuts are stronger films, but the extended editions have there merits and it's nice to see all the additional footage.

Warner Bros. Removes THE HOBBIT Extended Edition from 2013 Calendar
by Dave Trumbore Posted: October 5th, 2012 at 6:11 pm

Yesterday we brought you the glad tidings that Warner Bros had announced a fourth-quarter 2013 release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Extended Edition. Today, we print a retraction (of sorts) since Warner Bros. has now released a revised version of their calendar with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Extended Edition being mysteriously absent. The studio doesn’t say the Extended Edition Blu-ray and DVD are off the table (clearly they’ll be available), but say the “product has not been confirmed yet.” Hit the jump for more clarity on the issue.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey from director Peter Jackson stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom and Elijah Wood, and opens December 14th.

Here’s the official statement from a WB spokesperson:

In the recently distributed calendar included in the Warner Bros. 90th Anniversary press kit, there was an erroneous mention of an Extended Edition release for The Hobbit film. This product has not been confirmed yet and we apologize for any confusion.

And for fun, here’s the original calendar image, followed by the revised edition. Play “Find the Differences!”

Huge fan of LOTR and the books but have never actually read the Hobbit. Looking forward to seeing the movie though.

I love how they retracted it now... because the person who originally typed up the calendar was just guessing, right?

I really hope this means that the theatrical cut isn't three hours then. Six hours seemed more than fine for a Hobbit adaption, but nine? Possibly 9+ for what amounts to a kid's tale? Seems overkill.

Peter Jacksons middle name is overkill. King Kong didn't need to be 3 hours, either. Although I did prefer the extended LOTR better than the theatricals, but they are still average films at best.

Personally, I'm holding out for the version that cuts out the slap-stick dwarves.

It would be cool if the EE of the first Hobbit came with a box similar in design to the LotR EE blu-rays. Then, as each Hobbit EE blu-ray releases you can add it to your box.

That way fans who planned on holding off for a box set in 2015 don't have to, as they'll have the box from the get go and can add to it with each film.

---

I recall the LotR EE RotK DVD came with a mail away from for a box to hold all three, and that same box was used for the LotR EE DVD collection.

One of my favorites, but it was written for children, so it's not as much of an epic story as The Lord of the Rings.

(If you liked LotR enough to read the Appendices, then you'll probably enjoy The Silmarillion and Children of Hurin.)
