OK let's fix a few things. Alabama has 5, Miami has 4, USC has 2 or 2.5 I guess since they were stripped of the BCS title and still have the AP title. As for Miami, Florida St, and Florida they have had more recent success in terms of championships but before the 1980s none of them had much success. Florida is still going strong but Miami and Florida St. didn't maintain that success in the 2000s(before you say anything yeah I know Miami won it in 01 and were in the game in 02 but after that nothing). Ohio State's prestige comes from the fact that they have maintain success throughout the history of college football and don't have a short period of success and then fall off completely to mediocrity.

First and foremost, you're successful. When you have a successful program, there will always be people wanting to tear it down. Sometimes such a desire comes from jealousy. I don't know about you, but I have never encountered a vocal contingent of Idaho bashers (no disrespect intended to Vandal fans). So Ohio State certainly fits in this category.

Sometimes the venom comes from a sense that the program's success coincides with broken rules, NCAA violations or other things that seem to tip the playing field in its favor. Again, this category applies to the Buckeyes.

Third, I think there is a perception that Ohio State fans feel their program is the greatest ever. I'm not talking about the usual puffery, where even the worst programs hold up foam fingers that declare themselves "Number One." When fans and alumni boast that they're from THE Ohio State University—emphasis on the definite article—that comes off as arrogant. Sometimes the slightest whiff of arrogance is enough draw fire.

Please don't think I'm bashing Ohio State. Every program has its lunatic fringe, and every program has its detractors. But Ohio State has its own particular set of circumstances that seems to invite its own particular type of scorn.
Oh I completely understand that with success comes hatred, jealousy, etc. That is natural but it just seems with Ohio St it's a little more than what Alabama, USC, etc get.

I don't think Ohio St football is the greatest thing ever. I'm not that kind of fan to say that about any of my favorite teams. I root for them like any die hard does but I don't go overboard with my fandom. I also don't get the whole criticism with THE Ohio State University thing. Is that different than Miami players saying 'The U' constantly. I don't see people going all ballistic about Miami FL doing it like they do with Ohio St. does it. This ties back to my point that Ohio St gets treated differently

I count 4: 83, 87, 89, 01. OK you got a split title in 91. Alabama got a UPI national title in 73 so they have another one as well. I just have a hard time saying a team is a true national champion when they start splitting the titles.

No, it's no different. And for many years Miami has been mocked for that. Again, it all goes back to success coupled with arrogance. Remember how Steve Spurrier was loathed while at Florida? Same reason. Put him at an under-the-radar program like South Carolina and suddenly he's not on the most hated lists anymore. (SpurrierSucks, I know you currently loathe him, but you're a special case ).

If you're feeling picked on, just remember what Oscar Wilde said: "The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about."

1978 was a split title (Alabama - AP, USC - UPI/Coaches), even though it should have been unanimously USC for both the AP and UPI.

To wit... In Birmingham, AL on 9/23/1978:

USC 24 - Alabama 14

USC finished with a 12-1 record and Alabama finished with an 11-1 record in 1978. USC had the extra game, because they played in Hawaii that season.

I was referring to the upcoming playoff system for '14. I had a poor choice of words, I apologize.

Every record book I've seen treats a split national championship as a national championship. He knows this. Miami won 5.

He knows this. Even the BCS era can create split champions. You can't go back and nit pick. There are literally dozens if not hundreds of organizations/people who name national champions every season. Below is a link showing all of them. Even in 2002 when Ohio St. was the clear cut national champion (game ending vs. Miami notwithstanding) three organizations named USC the national champion. But any major publication I've seen treats a few select polls (these days Coaches and AP) as the decider for who is national champions. When it's a split championship it's always counted for historical purposes as one national championship, not half a national title.

The 1990 season was a weird one. No team finished with a perfect record. Colorado has a loss and a tie but won the AP poll by a good margin over GT. Georgia Tech finished with 11 wins and a tie and just barely garnered a split national championship by winning the UPI poll by one vote.

UCF's current head coach George O'Leary was actually the Defensive Coordinator at Georgia Tech when they won the national championship. And their Offensive Coordinator was Ralph Friedgen, the former Maryland head coach.

It was the same then as it is now. Colorado was ranked #5 to start the season and beat teams ranked 2, 6, 12, 18 and 22. Their tie was against the #8 and their loss was against the #21. Of course, they needed 5 downs to beat an unranked Mizzou team.

Georgia Tech was unranked and beat 1, 15, 19 and 25 (though the 19 was the same team that was #2 when Colorado played them).

Also, Tom Osborne (head coach of Nebraska, the team ranked 2/19) cast the deciding vote for GT in the UPI.

Did he really? That was classy. Especially given Georgia Tech destroyed his Nebraska team 45-21 in the Citrus Bowl.

Probably the worst pre-BCS team to win a national championship was that 1984 BYU team. Their strength of schedule (82nd/110 teams that season) is by far and away the worst of any national champion ever. They beat zero dreams ranked in the final top-25 poll and beat a lousy 6-6 Michigan team in the Holiday Bowl. They basically won because they were the only undefeated team at the end of the season.
