Question Playstation 3-Analog 7.1 Audio

I know this question has been asked a whole bunch of times but... Do you think Sony will come out with the 7.1 audio adaptor and if so what kinds of audio could it transmit?

Cause everything I hear and see is analog. When is Sony going to come out with a PS3 adapter that can plug into the back of my head and directly attached to my brain and I can avoid the analog? I think I saw this in a movie once.

Edit: Seriously its because some people don't have HDMI capable receivers.

Default analog because of older receivers

If Sony had a analog 7.1 on the PS3 I would buy one. I have an older Harman/Kardon avr 8000 the sound is wonderful and don't replace it. That is the reason for analog. Not because the sound is better but because some of us have spent thousands on equipment and don't want to replace it every couple of years.

Exactly. I don't want to upgrade to a HDMI reciever and spend money because I've already spent money on a reciever that only has HDMI Pass-through. (It's the Onkyo HT-R550) I don't think it'd be impossible to get 7.1 (not 5.1) from the PS3 through analog. The Playstation 3 decodes most next gen HD Audio types (except for DTS Master Audio for now). All it needs to do is sent out the signal through the SCART connection in the back via 7.1 Multichannel Analog Audio . That or Sony comes up with a HDMI to multichannel analog 7.1. I seriously doubt that.

I am thinking about getting an HDMI reciever. But right now, I'd rather choose to buy an inexpensive adaptor for analog 7.1 audio.

They have, it's called a reciever.

You can't do an inexpensive adapter, because what you're asking for is a reciever without an amplification circuit. The PS3 doesn't have the DACs inside to make this workable. Someone has made one, and I think it goes for about $500. It's designed for people with ludicrously expensive existing equipment.

No. All I'm asking for is a cable that has 7.1 analog audio out of the SCART connector on the back of the PS3. They can do stereo 2.0 out so why can't they do a 7.1 analog out without video.

Does the scart have enough outputs for 7.1? Personally I've never looked at it closely, but if it doesn't have room for that many channels its not possible.

I haven't found it online since the last time I checked. That's why I've been wondering if Sony, inventor of many technologies, could figure something so simple out and mainstream it.

Because the PS3 doesn't have the DACs required to make that happen. You need 8 DACs inside, and it only has 2 for the stereo output. Without those, you can't have analog out

In order to make it work you basically need all the hardware in a reciever except the amplifier, making it financially completely impractical for your average home theater buff that doesn't have a $5000 amp/pre-amp system hooked up

Please excuse the threadjack:
Wicky, since the playstation can't bitstream, How does this work with HDMI? Is the difference because it remains an all digital signal (hence no need for DAC's)? Thanks

The PS3 decodes the data to PCM and then the PCM is sent as a digital signal. Because there's no copy protection attached to the actual stream itself, it's all good

Why? I certainly don't believe this is true. I think sony could easily use one of those USB ports and provide a firmware update and drivers for a USB 7.1 analog output interface. If there's a market

I hope everything is okay.

The fact of the matter is a basic 7.1 USB audio interface is cheap. We are not talking about a $200+ piece of equipment. This is actually very old technology. You should be able to purchase a basic 7.1 USB audio interface for $50 or less.

I don't believe anyone in here said that they needed a $1000+ interface which supports THX, THX Ultra, THX Ultra 2. This solution is completely doable and practical. In fact, it would surprise me if Sony has not already done this in the lab but doesn't see a market value at this point.

I would be surprised if an adept programmer has not already created drivers for Ubuntu.

Ha.

I would think you know more about analog sound than digital? We humans experience the world in analog. Everything we hear from our sound systems is produced by an analog speaker and all digital signals must be converted to an analog electrical signal so that the speaker can convert the electrical energy in a coil to produce a fluctuating electro-magnetic field which is used to move a medium to generate analog sound waves.

I am curious if anyone has gotten the Audigy 2 NX or the Extigy to work with Ubuntu on the PS3.
