where did the 3 year comment come in at.

good idea, lets just keep movies at the theater exactly how they were. No progression in quality, just keep them how they were in 2005.

Ultimately, the point is that Spielberg loves film. He doesn't like digital projection and, for the first time in a while, has the power to limit how his movie is view theatrically. Lucasfilm had very specific standards that theaters had to be up to code on in order to run the Star Wars prequels. It is what it is.

Also, didn't the announcement say that if a theater only had digital, to let them (Paramount) know? In other words, it sounds like Paramount is saying "We want film projection, but if you can't do it, let us know and we'll try to twist Spielberg's arm". Maybe all of it is just a strong suggestion to project film?

No it means "Let us know and we'll arrange for you to rent a projector"

The number of theaters that went all digital is maybe a dozen, MAYBE

And of those that didn't retain at least 1 35mm (our digital theater still has one that can be swapped in) A handful at best

I have yet to even watch a movie at the theater on digital projection

I dont care what Indiana Jones will be playing on..all I know is im going to see this movie because ive been waiting forever to see it. I could careless which screen its on and what seats im sitting in and if there are scratches. I love going to the movie theater for the movie. I dont really get picky about the picture quality.

What constitutes seeing digital projection? a DVD player hooked to a projector with a DVI input is digital projection LOL.

I live in a pretty podunk area. We have one 14-screen multiplex in town, with a few odd (and very low-rent) 1-3-screen theaters scattered around in a 45-mile radius.

Last year the multiplex went all-digital, which resulted in the great improvement I discussed above.

Now, I could be wrong, but this area is hardly cutting edge, so I find it hard to believe we're one of only 12 theaters in the country to go all-digital.

Regardless, the number is very small, and it's highly unlikely that they didn't retain a projector or 2 for just this kind of situation

I am not sure if our theater kept any of there old projectors but only the managers know how to work them as everyone they trained no longer works there. With the digital projectors no one needs to be in the projection room so it actually cut a job that no longer was needed.

These theaters will have to rent a projector if they don't have one and it will cut down how much the movie makes. At my theater there is no way that it will be shown on 3 screens, it will most likely be shown only on one screen due to this and the cost of renting projectors.

He is going to have to allow his movies to be shown digitally. He can do it with Indy because of how many people will watch it.

Here are the next movies he will direct:

Tintin (2009)
Interstellar (2009)
Lincoln (2009)
The Trial of the Chicago 7

I would doubt that theaters would rent projectors for Chicago 7, it will not appeal to to enough people, its possible that his 2009 movies could be shut out of theaters due to the fact that they are only digital. These movies could loose 500-1000 screens the same with Indy as it may not have as many screens as theaters will only show it on one instead of multiple ones.

I think you greatly overestimate how many theaters will have dumped 35mm even 5 years from now.

Default No Blu Future for "Indiana Jones?" (EDIT: false alarm - relates to DLP theaters only)

Could this be a bad sign for "Indy" fans?

Don't read too much into this. They are making an assumption that it won't be on blu-ray. The actual story states that theaters will not be getting digital copies to show at release time for the movie.

Still, that is too bad for those wishing to see it at an HD theater.

Does anyone know why this is? Are the digital copies given to cinemas easy for pirates to copy, so is it an anti-piracy measure to distribute on film instead? Given Penton-man's recent comments about digital projection vs film projection it's hard to see any image quality reason for insisting on film.

it was already stated a ces that they were working on the blu ray for indy 4 so this is inconsequential as if they are working on 4 that 1-3 will be also as new trailer showed 1st 3 as much better looking transfers than available on dvd

Steven Spielberg prefers celluloid.

And anyway, it has been clarified that it has nothing to do with Blu-ray.

I, of course, still like film, but I do need to mention that the theater in my area that now 100% digital does look better. Is that due to resolution? Only partially. The thing is that these projectors all have new bulbs, sound systems, etc. while the other theater I go to that still uses film has outdated equipment and needs new bulbs. If you are watching film on a good setup, it is great. I saw Atonement at the older theater and still thought it was fantastic. Would I have appreciated it more on a new digital screen? Probably not. Now if the movie was something like Transformers then yes, I would like it better on the digital screen. There is a big increase in quality with these digital projectors over the older film projectors, but it isn't about resolution.

The bottom line is that there are a lot of factors other than just film vs. digital that goes into picture quality. My town had one of the last 150mm movie theaters before the suits closed it down. It literally blew the newest digital screens totally out of the water. This was on equipment that was over ten years old, five years ago. I think there still is one of these theaters near the zoo in Washington D.C., but I don't know if it is still there or now digital, but you watch a properly projected 150mm film and tell me that it is lessser quality than digital and I will be surprised. Seeing the films like 2001 and Lawrence of Arabia would blow you away.

I do like the theaters with the new equipment, and I love seeing all digital movies, but there ain't anything wrong with film. I can't wait for May 22nd.

Film's visual resolution is much, much higher than any digital format.

You really don't have a clue here.

I wonder if he and George Lucas had a fight over this one. George is the total opposite, he is a huge fan of DLP and wants it to be everywhere. He was the one who pushed so many theaters into getting it for SW Eps 2 and 3. I'm sure there was some disagreement about that. Maybe Skywalker Ranch will screen it in DLP...
