A situation like being successful? Because that's what they were, in the end. And it's not just in theaters. Their DVD sales broke records, and so did related merchandising.

Those "angry fans", not matter how many they are, are still the minority and won't affect the interest these movies have. And no matter how good these sequels will be, they will create controversy.

Those angry fans were in the minority of fans overall, but they were a majority inside the Star Wars fanbase - a lot of fans were either disappointed or upset by the final outcome, and Lucas, above all, knew that. Disney also know that -- sure, they might make a profit even if the film is terrible, but they're only hurting themselves in the long run because more people will know they've made a vital mistake. There's no question in my mind that part of why Lucas sold the rights was because he couldn't handle the pressure and criticism he got for what he did to the franchise - Disney don't want to be in that boat this close to purchasing the company.

Yeah, but that's in the past. We move on. Walt used to say that his company should never rest or dwell on past events, but keep looking to the future to new projects. So, I say it's long past time we let the disappointments of the prequels go, and we move on. What is past, is prologue.

Speaking to lucas consulting, the deduction I made that Ernest believes lucas is out; (by his own doing, or by disney understanding)

He says he's working on a hologram. Meaning: he won't be there. Lucas said she had material from novels and comics to draw from. Kennedy stated that she's hired writers to work on "ideas" and a script. Translation: they don't have much. In my opinion, they have a very, very broad outline on VII from him and not much more. Without anything in script form, there's no telling what they'll really come up with. It could be far and away from any outline he may have provided.
In all the different interviews I didn't get the feeling that the treatments aren't really there. That's a total assumption.

Kennedy said "were sitting down with writers" (turning to George) and that Lucas is there to pass on his old material, notes etc and suggest storylines like they did with Indiana Jones. George was reported not be anything but collaborative at the start of Indy storylines. And look how good the early part was.

I never said, I don't think, that Lucas still wanted a SAY in production and would be on set or anything. But his fingerprints will still be on it if Kennedy is having his input on story for 7,8 and 9.

I believe the idea that Kathleen has lots of the novels and EU to draw from? That part of the statements is speaking to the plan to release a star wars movie every 2-3 years ongoing. After the saga finishes. Probably in regards to TV too with the expanded aspects, also.

====

And @ the rest of your post. I just feel I'm getting that same stuff packaged again, which I'm certain you'll think about any rebuttals from me so I'm gonna say thanks for the discussion and move right along.

My time is currently being spent thinking about the meetings George will have to pass on his baby in good hands.

====

I kind of hope it's not someone like Whedon or Fincher, or Ridley, or such. I hope it's either a professional link, which Spielberg obvious one, or it's a newcomer who is prolific with talent akin to JJ Abrams.

I haven't seen Bryan Singer mentioned more than once. No one thinks he might be a good choice? I think he "gets" sci-fi, but can also align himself with established properties as he did in Superman Returns, which I love/hate conflicted, yet still think he was a great choice who shipped a troubled production.

Kennedy won't sheppard it poorly, so he would be more free to be creative and passionate about the directing.

I don't even think that is true, I have never met a Star wars fans outside of the internet who hated the prequels. And I loved them myself. I have met people with mixed feelings or who had grievances but never outright hated them, only on the internet. Also your statement doesn't even make sense a minority of the fans but a majority of the fanbase?

I gotta agree here. Me and my bro are huge SW fans and we get that the prequels have their share of issues. But, hate is such a strong word. Thats fine if a few fringe "fans" get all worked up over the prequels but thats their problem. They cling to their UOT, especially The Empire Strikes back since that film seems to be the only one they truly like....for whatever silly reason.

Its no bother to the true majority who can & do enjoy the prequels. Im not worried about the 5% nutjobs that essentially hate everything anyways. These are the kinds of people that hate Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, rabbits frolicking in the meadow, all that kind of stuff.

While I do know a few who don't like the prequels, I have met far more who think the OT is INFERIOR to the prequels, since they (the OT) are more like adventure movies, than the fantasy space epics with grand vistas and intricate storylines, that the prequels are. Also, most everyone I knows enjoys the prequels' look over the OT'. Of course, those tend to be younger, so I guess it's a generational thing. I just wonder why we can't all get along?

I personally believe that it is the UOT fans, who wanted to experience the magic they had experienced in '77 once again, but had turned into men, who along the way, had lost their inner child, who hated on them so passionately, and people who let themselves be swept away by the criticism of the UOT fans. It's hip to hate on the prequels, and on Jar Jar Binks in particular.

I am not saying the prequels are without their faults, but neither is the OT or UOT, if you will. Many UOT fans are still wearing their pink glasses when it comes to judging the UOT, but take them off instantly when viewing the OT, or the prequels. That's a fact, and I get it. It's a combination of a lot of nostalgia, and unforgettable memories, that are unique, but let's be a bit more realistic here, shall we?
For instance, the insanely dumb reviews by the prequels basher, could be done about almost any film out there, including the UOT.

Point is: All of the episodes are still leaps and bounds better than most every other blockbuster that has come and gone since, because the story is timeless. It's an epically told spiritual morality tale, packed into a grand space opera setting.

May the new ones continue this tradition, and stay true to what made SW so special in the first place.

I showed my girl the saga for the first time a month ago in the order they were released. She knew nothing of SW. She dug the UOT but had some complaints about the SFX. Got bored of TPM halfway through ("shit that kid cant act!!"), laughed at the romance bits in Clones "(why is Anakin so...CREEPY and stalkerish?"), but liked ROTS ("they should have just made this one, the other two were kinda pointless").

just throwing it out there

It is intresting when SW is shown to noobs for the first time. The reactions are varied. The few times Ive watched the OT with noobs, they generally get into it but do see some datedness and such. The prequels seem to get accepted a little more by younger folks due to being modernized. Although there are more cringeworthy moments in the PT than the OT.

As far as capturing the same kinds of reactions as the films did in 1977 - forget it. The phrase "lightning in a bottle" comes to mind.

its not hip. They just sucked and were poorly made movies. If anyone lost their inner child, it was Lucas.

ridiculous. The OT is in the top 250 movies ever made for a reason. Theyre all solid films, two are outright classics. Fans and critics agree. The PT is inferior. The reviews are not "insanely dumb", its the apologists who sound like broken records trying for the last 10 years to convince others and possibly themselves that those shit movies were on the same level as the UOT that are insanely dumb.
