I'm not familiar with any of these titles.. I think I'd like the Shimizu and the Kaurismäki sets the best... anyone have these and can recommend one over the other? As long as they aren't Japanese New Wave (which is probably the only film "style" that I really can't stand), I'm good to go.

The Kaurismaki Eclipse is wonderful and I can't recommend it enough. If you saw Le Havre already and didn't really loved it there is really no much problem as these films are quite different. The trilogy is excellent all around as not a single film there isn't worth it, the one next is always better than the last but the first is such a good film that there shouldn't be a problem loving them all. All the three films work as a great picture of the life at Finland during the 80s. The things they ate, where did they work, the streets, the people and so on. The humor is spot on and the way Kaurismaki treats comedy is quite unique and refreshing. A top Eclipse set (Top-5 easily) for me.

It's also my very favourite P&P film. I've heard nothing about a bluray release of this. I think Scorsese was involved in the US DVD release of the film a few years back, which I believe had somewhat different colour from the UK discs previously available. I don't know if a full restoration has been done on the film. Frankly, I'd be happy if they just put out a HD version of the same print on a bluray.

I don't know much about the original, having never seen it. However, I saw the Imamura version at the cinema on its release in the early 80s and was absolutely blown away by it. It won quite a few awards at the time. I grabbed the MoC bluray of the Imamura version earlier this year, and will get the Criterion relase of the older version too.

Cheers to Criterion for putting out a complementary release rather than duplicating Imamura's version on MoC.

World on a Wire is one of my favorite films released last year. Enjoyed it wayyyy more than The Matrix.

On the other hand, maybe someone can tell me what's so good about Pasolini's nudity filled and absurd films. I watch them for a laugh, but would never consider a purchase.

Thanks, I actually havent seen Le Havre either, but his films look like a style I would enjoy.

The only Criterions I have are Dazed and Confused, The Seven Samurai, The Samurai Trilogy and Rosemary's Baby. All of which have been blind buys. Loved all of them although I haven't made it all the way through The Samurai Trilogy.

You're so lucky. Based on the things I've bought (haven't made any big purchases on amazon so don't know if it differs), the state tax adds about another dollar to the total purchase price (product price + S&H).

We haven't had some Wed Anderson hate in awhile, so I'm stirring the pot. When does Life Aquatic come out? I seriously almost bought the DVD for 5 bucks at Sobeys, one of the major grocery stores in Atlantic Canada, to go with my sushi I was getting there, but I refrained because of the potential upgrade. It's like seriously the only Anderson film not out on BD that I like other than Fantastic Mr. Fox and Darjeeling Limited. Haven't seen Moonrise Kingdom yet. I'm soooooo conflicted here. I kinda want to go back and get it. It is the Criterion edition too for 5.99. Would I get hosed for buying it at 5.99 as its only DVD? I know a lot of people think the BDs are only worth 8-10 bucks and this DVD is so close to that magic price point.

Have I stirred the pot enough yet? Monday morning doldrums.

Yeah Micky and Peter didn't have very nice things to say about the show at the time. Micky thought that the Beeb's The Young Ones was the official Monkees remake, and had a hand in bringing it over to MTV back in the 1980s because he was still in England being a director at the time. Imagine if the Monkees had been able to do their show in the Young Ones style, they would have been cancelled in an instant back in the 1960s. As much as I enjoy both shows, the Young Ones seems to be a bit more dated than the Monkees. I blame that fascist Thatcher!
