electronics are made to work with the power for the country it was intended for. Diffrent voltage & diffrent Hz's can cause long term damage to electronics.

The PS3 has a universal switching PSU. Don't worry, it will be fine.

I've been running mine for about a year with a kettle cable and no problems to report yet.

just connect it. that is all you need to do.

EDIT: not sure though. Your is 40GB. I am not sure if non-universal PSU is being used to cut the cost). better re-check with other 40GB owners

The voltage is not the problem it is the Hz's, I am reading diffrent things when it comes to PS3 made for reagion A on the net. You can always get a voltage regulator That will also convert the Hz's.

What can the Hz's do i no the US is about 60 where as here in scotland it's 50

Japanese has 2 system (which applies to different areas):
100V with 50Hz
100V with 60Hz

and it is completely fine with my Japanese PS3 (there is only one model)

i would not do it unless you have a voltage converter, my ps3 says 120v 60hz .
i have alot of universal electronics and if it has a switching transformer it will say
120/240v 50/60 hz the ps3 however does not have one and it would not be a good idea to use it without a voltage converter you will fry you ps3

I'am From Scotland Myself I Have UK PS3 60GB & US PS3 40GB I Have Had No Problems With The US PS3 (Had For 6Months) And That Is Using Just A Plain UK Mains Kettle Lead So Plug In And Enjoy.

I have had a USA PS3 plugged in at my UK home for 9 months no, no worries - just used a kettle plug.
