Wow. I mean, can it not get any better for Blu fans? 2008 is going to go down in "history" as the best year for Blu-ray ever...

If Apple TV ever ends up being what Steve Jobs wants it to be, I'd probably get one. Their selection would have to be at least equal to Netflix though . . . cool idea for rentals. I'll never be thrilled with digital purchases, though.

I hate downloads more and more everyday : that's a trash way (= you don't like it; you just throw it away) way of seeing movies : no research needed, no advice needed from friend or shop, no financial risk, no taste for an actor or director ... The perfect broadcast for non movie lovers. It'll occupy them for the length of the movie (or less) and they won't even have to think of it later. That's how viewer quality goes down fast.

What I think is funny, is that out of Netflix's "6000 titles" they include filler like an old Lacross match and a How-to video for playing a video game.

Future my ass.

In Netflix's defense, they have stated on many occasions that they are targeting a different audience then Apple and Amazon are trying to target. Apple and Amazon are placing their entire future in the idea that content providers will just swamp them with offers begging them to deliver their content online. Netflix just went a different way. Different, alternative and possibly not "mainstream" which means they can continue to deliver to that huge portion of their customer base that isn't just looking to rent/dl the next piece of Hollywood crap. It's kinda like trying to complain about an antique store not selling new, high-end electronics...it's just not who they are pandering to. They have the disc rentals to cover that.

Why bother renting from Apple when you can have all you can eat with Netflix.
Once Netflix start doing video streaming with PS3 who is going to rent from Apple. First you gotta buy Apple TV to rent any movies from them, forget that and who would want to watch movie on their Ipod or Iphone... Yeah, Let's watch Starwars on Iphone, I don't think so.

I have an apple TV and while I am not a huge fan of it I do enjoy getting my TV shows from it and I hope that the TV aspect continues to grow and they are able to get a deal re-struck with nbc-universal

Good glad to hear that these services not only offer a overpriced product in a d/l form, but that the distribution and quality both suck!

Guys, just because Apple released their Macbook Air and releasing movie downloads, doesn't mean that they are doing away with Optical Drives, and don't want Blu Ray. Apple are going to be replacing Super Drives with Blu Ray drives when they have a confirmed supplier, and they are ready to ship the drives, and they have software which authors to Blu Ray, such as Final Cut Studio and iDVD.

Another factor, of course, is the storage issue. From the same reporter who wrote that we should wait on Blu-ray:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23620315/
"Data contributes to ‘exploding digital universe’"

If most households' optical disc collection was on hard drives, the cost of that storage would be monstrous. But... we've come to this point in the conversation before too.

Yeah, I know. I was just thinking about my SD DVD collection. If I had it on volatile magnetic media I'd need at least 10 Terabytes - and I'd be responsible for managing it. I'd want it stored on a raid array. What sort of money would I need to just store that? And what effort? And how would I play it to my TV via HDMI? Can't even get HDMI with a home theatre PC at the moment as far as I know. So maybe via my PS3. Of course a PS3 can't access a NAS or a network drive on a file server, just a uPNP server or a USB mounted drive.

Way way way too much trouble. And in terms of a large Medium Def download, why bother.
