David Fincher is one of my favorite director, I wouldn't mind if he got the job. He has his own style, but as someone who was inspired by Star Wars to be a film director, I'm sure he's flexible and adapt, while slightly giving that touch of darkness. And he worked with Kathleen Kennedy too.

I'm hoping one day great screenwriting and Fincher will hook up one day, but I truthfully don't think it has happened yet.

I don't agree. 'Zodiac' is a masterpiece, at least in my eyes, and 'The Social Network', 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo', 'Se7en', 'Fight Club', and 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' are all between good to great. Even 'Panic Room', 'The Game', and 'Alien 3: Producer's Cut' are all very solidly entertaining films, even if they aren't his best. I really don't see any of Fincher's work as shallow.

I know, I thought the same way before. But now that he says he is interested has me curious. I mean, he knows his own "Fincher" style, and he knows Star Wars style, they don't match. So why does he want to do it?

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button isn't really "Fincher" except for cinematography, other than that it's more to the Forrest Gump kind lf genre. And if you really look at Zodiac it is very toned down compared to his other crime thrillers.

About Quentin Tarantino, his name never even crossed my mind. And he has said that he won't do it.

For the sake of discussion let's say his stuff is shallow. Is that really disqualification for a Star Wars movie? Would being too shallow knock him out of contention for a Bond or a Star Trek or an Indy?

One of the more exciting aspects of this regime change is that one guy won't be calling all the shots anymore. Writers will be doing the writing, directors will be doing the directing and so forth and so on.

Maybe Episode VII will have a great script, maybe it won't. Maybe a guy like Fincher would be a good fit for that script, maybe he won't. But if he is a good fit I don't think there's any question he's pretty capable.

Rumors have been flying lately that X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn will helm Episode VII, and Horn demurred from confirming the buzz, though he set the timetable for an announcement on that front: "I would say you'll know soon. And it's got to come from Kathy Kennedy — we don't have the company yet!" Still, Horn said that fans should rest assured that Disney has the franchise's best interests at heart. "We take very seriously the obligation to make a very good movie. Kathy is a very experienced producer; George Lucas is the godfather of that franchise and very, very involved on a consulting basis, so we feel very confident."

I enjoy Finchers films, but the last thing I want is a green-tinted, dark Star Wars. It might as well be Nolan applying for the gig.

Agreed. There are just some guys I don't want near these films and Fincher is one of them. I'm not even a big fan of any of his other films either. No, no, no.

Pretty much sums up what I was going to say -- I particularly love The Game, just because of the idea behind it; it deals with the paranoia aspect brilliantly, and is very entertaining.

Oh, and I don't want to even mention the almost-perfect Fight Club; that is a superb piece of cinema, and I could talk about it all day...

The Game is probably my least favorite Fincher film, outside of Alien 3 and Panic Room. I thought it was absurd from start to finish.

I suppose what's soured me on Fincher was a string of good-looking but unsatisfying movies - Alien3, The Game, Seven (liked the first 2/3, the thing fell apart for me by the end), Fight Club (loved the first act, then, once again, it fell apart for me), and then Panic Room. That's the last Fincher movie I've seen. I gave up. I was tired of being annoyed. So I haven't seen Zodiac, Ben Button, Social Network, or Girl. Heard bad things about Zodiac, heard his last three films are attempting to establish him as a commercial success, as his movies don't make much money.

Well it's complicated. Paramount currently has the rights to all the currently-released Indy movies and possible future installments. Everything else not in the motion-picture category related to Indy is in Disney's hands. From what I understand.

Hmm, maybe they'll give us Young Indy in series format. Maybe they'll give us some of the older video games (Fate of Atlantis, Last Crusade) on the PSN. Assuming that they own LucasArts too.

Yes, they own LucasArts too. Along with Skywalker Sound and ILM. If THX was still with Lucasfilm it would be included as well. Disney owns everything now. Except for the Ranch if I'm not mistaken.

I do understand your criticisms but, for some reason, I've always been able to see past them with Fincher's films -- maybe it's due to my unwaivering love of Fight Club that I resist seeing his films for what they really are. For me, Panic Room or Alien3 is probably his worst film -- PR is simply too shiny and smooth for its subject matter, and we all know the problems that faced Fincher during production of the third Alien movie. That said, I think they're both very enjoyable and entertaining.

You should check out Girl though; even though you're not a fan of his style, I'm sure you'll really like that.

I know I'm excited everytime I sit down for a Fincher film, and he never seems to fail to deliver, IMO.

Everyone pretty much glows over 'Zodiac', I haven't heard much criticism against that movie. I think you should really watch it before writing it off. In fact, i would say that about his entire later filmography. I think he's come a long way as a director, and his films from later in his career really show that. You should really give them a chance.

I think, given the right script, Fincher would make an excellent 'Star Wars' film. I feel the same way about Favreau and Johnston. Those are the three I really want to see do this new trilogy, personally. I would have loved to see Brad Bird do it, but I know that isn't going to happen. In the end, I think we can all agree we just really want to see a great trilogy to 'Jedi', because the possibilities are really endless right now.

As interesting as it would be, I'm with Ernest on this one - I just think that Disney will take one look and see "Fincher, the auteur" and not "Fincher, the director for hire" and immediately cross him off the list.


Would love to be proved wrong, though. Just think there's a 1 in 8767376 chance of it happening.

In a lot of ways I think Dragon Tattoo kind of skewers the Fincher as auteur concerns. Sure, it's a fairly distinctive Fincher film but it's also incredibly faithful to the source material. It's hardly a Monty Python 'Sam Peckinpah's Salad Days' skit.

I think it also undercuts the notion that his stuff is shallow. He does a lot of really subtle things that reinforce central themes and character traits.

Does any of that put him at the top of my wish list? Nope. Will I be disappointed if they go in another direction? Hardly.

But in the unlikely event he does get the nod I won't be gnashing my teeth or rending my garments either.

I've sat out of a lot of speculation surrounding the Lucasfilm deal. I remember people were worried that the 20th Century Fox fanfare may disappear from the Star Wars films, I am indifferent on that, but the opening of Raiders from the Paramount hill to the opening shot of Raiders is just an iconic cinema moment. Will be sad if that ever gets the chop.
