When I watched it at the cinema, i knew that the 35mm were going to look crap on blu ray. Inception was very soft too. Its the source not the blu ray. Nolan does not give a toss about lighting, skin tones, contrast, black crush, soft focus. The murkyness of indoor scene's are hard to watch sometimes with his style.

The dance scene with Bruce and Sylena is a prime example, every single person as the same skin tone, which is the same colour as everthing else in the room. Detail is lost, crush is everywere. At the end of the day Nolans indoor scene's will never transfer well to good blu ray PQ in my view.

Its an awesome transfer unless you guys watch movies with microscopic vision eyes. I mean I cant believe someone disliking this PQ.

The unusual softness in 35m scenes was def. a problem with the transfer.

It's par for the course. I'm not understanding the criticism of this transfer at all, considering the director's intent and the fact that, besides the IMAX sequences, it looks exactly like Inception, which is a great transfer because it approximates Nolan's intended visual look.

Is that the point of BD?

How is it unusual when everyone has said that it looks exactly like this in the theatre?

It doesn't and not everyone said that. I saw it multiple times in real 70mm and it's not like this.

But I don't think it's the worst.

It is. The bluray is exactly how i saw it in IMAX. The 35mm scenes are not as bad as people are making it out to be. As soon as the first shot with gary oldman came on i knew this was good transfer and replicated exactly what i saw in IMAX. The IMAX shots even more so.

That's why I asked if it was an accurate representation of the source.

Most people don't know that. They think it's the same type of problem as Gangs of New York or Gladiator.

So yes, a lot of the hate is misguided.

We're specifically talking about the 35mm scenes. Nobody is arguing how good the IMAX footage looks.

Examples of the out-of-focus look during the 35mm scenes:

http://www.doblu.com/wp-content/uplo...trises5915.jpg

I would have taken these myself, but the dude at Doblu did it for me.

If you sit far away from your TV, it's fine. But when I watch movies from a 4 ft distance, I hate the look of the 35mm scenes on this transfer.

Sorry but the 35mm parts in my view are average at best when it comes to the blu ray PQ. Seriously if the entire film was shot in 35mm, and it look liked it did, then it would get 3.5 to 4 for Video. Not awful but nothing outstanding either.

I wonder if any changes will be made, to any of the films, in terms of PQ/AQ, for the upcoming Ultimate set?
That might be an indicator for those that think the PQ in this film was not fantastic.
I think the only scene that really looked questionable was, at the masquerade charity ball, but I think Nolan intended a low light look for that sequence. Although I don't recall him commenting on it during any of the extras. Also I didn't see the film, theatrically, so I can't really compare.
Not even a complaint on my part, more an observation. This film, and all it's technical merits, delivered for me!

When does part 4 come out!

I only saw the movie once in theater and didn't pay enough attention to make visual comparisons to the blu-ray.

TV viewing distance, and a smaller set will also minimize the effect.

I'm on 60" and it's pretty glaring at times. If I hadn't already watched the movie at home, you could have told me those were upconverted pics and I would have believed you.

I did notice the softness in Inception as well but I find it odd that The Prestige imo looks absolutely amazing.

Inception had something similar in one scene. But thats how it looked in the theater. Which is the point of bluray. This is the way Nolan shoots his films.

They're way above average imo. It's not 100% reference, but compared to TDK it's really good. I didn't see anything that bothered me too much while watching the 35mm scenes.

Nobody complained this much about TDK transfer, which was so obviously horrible, and on top of that it got a 5 from this site but rises gets a 4.5? Thats makes absolutely no sense seeing how rises 35mm scenes and IMAX scenes improve so, so much from TDK's.

Twilight zone we're living in.

In my view, and the 5 other guys who I watched with thought that 35mm parts were average at best. Again on my screen when watched again, still average at best.
