Long story short. A friend and I were discussing Zero Dark Thirty coming out and I realized that I am not very excited about it. The discussion went into war movies in general and I guess I am not fond of them.
I then said that I really enjoyed Black Hawk Down due to the musical score. I looked it up and it wasn't even nominated in 2002. Lord of the Rings won that year, which is fine, although to not put it ahead of AI, A Beautiful Mind, or Monsters INC. is sad. I think it is one of the best film scores in recent years. Listen to these two if you aren't sure of the key melodies. http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=CA&v=BWAhVbayGv4 |

although rings was the better soundtrack by far . theres so many unappriecatied scores out there. Have you heard the score for 'The Beast' or I believe in america the film was called 'The Beast of War'. its composed by mark isham if I remeber rightly its amazingly beautiful and it didnt even get a mention in the oscars in 1988 |

sad part is that there are a lot of scores that get forgotten about due to not being in a big movie, another movie with a good score comes out the same time, etc. For me, it has always been the John Williams/Jerry Goldsmith agruement. Everyone raves about Williams' scores for Star Wars and Superman and they are great scores but for me, Goldsmith's score for Star Trek The Motion Picture blows Star Wars out of the water. it is far more alien and unique than Star Wars which always seemed earth-bound for me. again, a great score but i feel Goldsmith did a better job. yet his work on movies like that, Planet of the Apes, and other sci-fi movies usually isn't the first thing people think of - it is John Williams and usually Star Wars. scores usually are not promoted which is a shame because a bad score can really damage a movie.

That's a good one!
Adding to the list, I would say an under appreciated score from Williams would be Prisoner of Azkaban. That was definitely his best since The Last Crusade imho. It was nominated for an Oscar, I believe... however doesn't seem to get much attention. btw - I am not taking away from Fellowship of the Ring. That is in my top 5 all time scores, I just feel that BHD score really made the movie and is forgotten by most. |

The Fountain is my favorite film score by a mile.
Some other great ones are Joe Hisaishi's Departures and Cliff Martinez's score for Soderbergh's Solaris. I love a score that adds to the movie and is still good enough to listen to on it's own. The Fountain is definitely the one I listen to most. I also put on some of the Tan Dun scores for Hero and House of Flying Daggers and stuff sometimes. |
