Lincoln
Rating: 4.5/5. -Excellent cast, script, direction. -I'm not a big U.S. Historian, so can't comment on how accurate it was. They really conveyed the historical struggles LIncoln faced really well and dumbed it down for the average viewer, while at the same time didn't compromise the complexity of what LIncoln faced - trying to accomplish two seemingly contradictory objectives, while people on both sides of the political aisles were against them, and only looking out for their own political careers (sound familiar? ). -My only deduction was the sheer scope of the plot, in 3 major sections: (1) 13th amendment, (2) ending civil war, and (3) assassination, felt crammed in a 150 minute film. John Adams kept popping in my head as I watched, with the "this needs HBO treatment". John Adams is a valid comparison (in terms of subject matter), and its night and day (in terms of the benefits of HBO miniseries treatment v. 150 minute theatrical cut treatment). IMO, Lincoln deserves HBO. Last edited by surfdude12; 12-10-2012 at 07:06 PM. |

Octopussy (1983)
Directed by : John Glen Starring : Roger Moore, Maud Adams, Louis Jourdan Format : HDTV Story : British agent 009 is found dead at the British embassy in East Berlin, dressed as a circus clown and carrying a fake Fabergé egg. Bond (Moore) is given the task to find out what the Soviet are planning. He discover that a certain Kamal Khan (Jordan) want's to buy the real egg during an auction. Bond change the real for the fake and then follow Khan to his India. Khan soon manage's to get the real egg but not before a listening device was place into it. Bond is able to learn that something will be taking place at a circus in east Berlin. before this happen he track's down the mysterious Octopussy (Adams). She a professional at smuggling diamonds across borders and thus why Khan is in need of her services. Once in east Berlin Bond witness the change of the diamonds with a bomb set to go off inside an American base in West Germany. Bond is on time to stop the bom and Octopussy now see she was setup. Looking for revenge, she along with her special train women attack Kahn palace but he manage's to escape in a private plane. Both Bond and Octopussy leave the plane before it crashes and Kill Khan. Comments : For some reason fans have a low opinion of this one. Yet it mostly a good spy movie. I think that after For Your Eyes Only maybe fans expected better but it's still good and fun and doesn't have too much of the usual little jokes that Moore used in earlier movies. Not the best Bond but still fun Ratings : 3.5/5 |

Yeah, nothing says Christmas like a bunch of Asian films.
![]() Next greatest blind-buy: Resident Evil: Damnation (for some odd reason, listed as Biohazard: Damnation on imdb ![]() Pretty much more of the same as RE: Degeneration. Damnation has its share of awesomeness, but the story and action didn't seem to stand out quite as much as Degeneration. The whole film looks like a high-quality video game cutscene, for better or for worse. Really, it's more like a companion piece for the Resident Evil 6 video game. Meaning...fans may love it. ![]() 3.5/5 (Entertainment: Pretty Good | Story: Pretty Good | Film: Pretty Good) Recommendation: For game fans. The Blu-Ray looks and sounds darn near perfect! PQ: 5/5, AQ: 4.5/5 Next greatest blind-buy: Shaolin Pretty good historical film of sorts, kinda along the same lines as Ip Man, but with less frequent fighting. Fight scenes in Shaolin are pretty cool, but infrequent. The story has its share of interesting moments, but something about it just never grabbed me the way Ip Man did (however, this might just be because I was distracted last night and wasn't giving the film 100% attention ![]() 3.5/5 (Entertainment: Pretty Good | Story: Pretty Good | Film: Pretty Good) Recommendation: For martial arts or historical film fans. This Blu-Ray looks pretty sharp and clean, with some iffy color/contrast (probably artistic intent). Sound quality is alright. PQ: 4/5, AQ: 4/5 The UK CineAsia edition is region-free. ![]() Next greatest blind-buy: Lady Snowblood Now this film truly defines the Christmas spirit, in the way it so effectively merges the contrasting colors of the gentle white snow and the endless gushing of red blood... ![]() First thing that came to mind during this film was that it had Kill Bill written all over it. Sure enough, Meiko Kaji's song came on, and I totally recognized it from Kill Bill's ending, and I was totally geeking out over it. ![]() On its own merits, Lady Snowblood is a pretty decent, bloody revenge flick with its own sense of style (yeah, a little similar to QT, but still so very 1970s Japanese). The story is not bad, and told with a very mixed up narrative structure (another possible KB influence ![]() 4/5 (Entertainment: Good | Story: Pretty Good | Film: Good) Recommendation: For fans of Asian cinema, or possibly revenge films in general. This Blu-Ray is a bit on the murky, hazy, iffy-contrast side, but still has decent enough sharpness and detail. Sound quality is good. PQ: 3.5/5, AQ: 4.5/5 The UK Steelbook is awesome, but I do believe it's region-locked. ![]() |

One more Asian film to review.
I saw it in the store, and three things caught my eye. First, a robot on the front cover, looking a lot like Sonny from I, Robot. Second, the word "Doomsday" in the title, reminding me that we all only have nine days left to live ( ![]() Thus, my next greatest blind-buy is Doomsday Book. This film presents three futurist-themed stories, which either directly or indirectly hint at apocalyptic overtones. The first story (called Brave New World) is a simple zombie-pocalypse, brought on by some kind of mutant food poisoning. As this one dude turns into a zombie, he's also searching for the girl of his dreams. Plenty of gnarly violence and partying ensues. Unarguably, the most worthwhile story will be the middle one (entitled Heavenly Creature), in which a robot at a Buddhist temple attains enlightenment, and everybody tries to figure out what to do with him (or it, depending on perspectives). While this story seems to move the slowest, it's most interesting for its philosophical implications, especially in regards to Buddhism; the story does a fine job of underscoring the key Buddhist themes of materialism, perspectives, and cycles of life. Even if you don't catch all that, the film will spark some good brain activity with the simple moral notion of whether or not it's wise to terminate a spiritual robot. ![]() The final story (Happy Birthday) is easily the most absurd: a little girl breaks her daddy's 8-ball, and orders a new one online. The 8-ball appears two years later...as a meteor traveling at hypervelocity. The end of the world ensues. ![]() Each story offers a little of something: a little bit of quirky humor, a little bit of heart, a little bit of style, and even a little food for thought. Even though Heavenly Creature will stand out as the strongest work of science fiction, coming close to approaching Isaac Asimov levels of greatness, Brave New World is an entertaining thing to watch, and one can't help but to appreciate how straight Happy Birthday plays out. This might be one of the best (and maybe coming close to strangest) anthology of short films I've seen since Tokyo! Despite some stylistic excess in Brave New World, each film is crafted with superbly stylish photography and editing. Acting and writing are impeccable all around. The films use just enough sets, props, costumes, and special effects to tell their stories, and is quite effective. 4.5/5 (Entertainment: Very Good | Stories: Good | Film: Very Good) Recommendation: A certain yes to fans of Korean cinema, fans of science fiction, and fans of Eschatology. Good thing I'm all three. ![]() This Blu-Ray has its fair share of grain and noise, but still looks really nice and sharp with solid colors and contrast. Sound quality is alright. PQ: 4/5, AQ: 4/5 |
