b.t.w., people may have noticed a somewhat prolific nature to my posting over the past several days. Honestly, I have two hidden agendas. The first being, and the one of utmost priority, is that I find this prolific posting behavior to be quite mentally therapeutic in coping with the grief from recently losing our dog ….who was much more than a ‘pet’, but was a family member.

I would like to thank you all for being so patient with me, especially when I publically speak to myself. I still hurt.

Back to The Hobbit, have a friend who's checking out the Premier tomorrow night and am looking forward to his impressions on hfr, though I suspect being such a huge 3D fan, he might not notice. I for one will be giving the Imax experience a try in the coming weeks as I'm one of those who has trouble with 3D. Not as much eye fatigue as having difficulty with the different layers. I guess the best way to describe it is it looks like those old cardboard theaters where they would move a ship in front of a moving cardboard sea in the background. I do suffer from eye strain also, but to a lesser degree. Maybe HFR will be good for me.

Along with multiple friends, extended relatives and other animals over the years, when you factor in the more personally intimate loss of both my parents and now our beloved ‘little fella’, it’s tough to keep rebounding back.

The Hobbit should be a good test for my wife too as she gets eye strain and sometimes a little headache watching any 3D theatrical film but, I fear even with The Hobbit she will still have problems because of flicker and motion blur….even at 48fps – still too low of a fps, at least for her.

I’ll explain later as I’m hitting the sac, the antique clock chimed only once.

Woof, that is one sour thread man. I stay out of there after things got super childish on me (partly my fault for letting it continue). I tried making the point that 5 perf 70mm was still considered a "large format" screening method, posted some theaters that can still run it, and somehow... *scratches head* was completely slammed for it... not like a cool debate about it either. No, we just went to plain "third grade level" inside of a few minutes. I avoid that thread like the plague now.

Though i didn't lose one, when i was a early teenager me and 2 friends found a dog outside. Somebody left him with the leash hooked to a gate. We took him to one of my friends house, where he stayed permanently, and took care of him like we had him for years. He really liked us. Obeying our every command, playing with us etc. We named him Tommy.

The fun didn't last long as a few months later my friends father took him away (long story). As he's taking him to his van the dog was showing restraint and crying. I started to cry myself. Alot. My friends had to calm me down. It took awhile for me to get over it. Even now though, typing this is stirring up some emotions.

Dogs sure can have a affect on us.

Here's my thoughts on 48fps in 3D after witnessing the Hobbit today. FYI, I didn't like it. But...

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, 48FPS IS THE REAL ****ING DEAL...IN 3D.

This was the absolute best 3D presentation I've ever witnessed. I don't like 3D in the slightest. It's a gimmick. But at 48fps, it's a ****ing revelation. I honestly don't know what type of cinema is right for 48fps. I don't see it working for dramas, indies, or comedies (considering network television comedy is already at that). Frankly, I don't even know if 2D 48fps is such a good idea either. I just don't know.

What I do know is that Avatar 2 and 3 at 48fps in 3D is going to be a sight to behold. Hell, the next two Hobbit films are going to be a sight to behold. The visual effects. The vistas. The action. Just spec-****ing-tacular. The one drawback is lighting, production design, and makeup. Frankly, none of them felt fake, except for the make up. That'll get fixed. At times, yes, the action felt like it was moving in fast forward but it wasn't all the time.

I don't want to say that it's like looking out of a clear window or real life but that's about the best way to describe it. Spectacle filmmaking is forever changed with this. I don't see how Transformers 4 isn't in 48fps in 3D. Visual effects take on another dimension at this frame rate. Gollum felt like he was right in front of me during the Riddles in the Dark sequence (which is easily the best sequence in the film). It's startling excellent, the look of this film. New Zealand has never looked better in the cinema.

48fps in 3D is so damn impressive that, despite the fact that I think Jackson messed up royally by splitting this story in three parts, I'm there opening day for Part 2, just to see what he throws at us in 48fps in 3D. Wait until you see Rivendell. Jesus Christ, what a sight!

Sorry for this long post because I'm of two minds on this film. I just think, had he just told the story as it was in the book and not try to connect it to Lord of the Rings, it would've been a nice, light fantasy film about a hobbit who's finds out what he's worth.

On the other hand, 48fps is here and we better get use to it because it's here and it's not going anyway. I don't even know how to use this. I don't know what types of films this is needed for. All I know is is that I just witnessed something visually special this evening. It's beyond anything I've ever seen.

Well, I can't watch anymore TV about the very tragic news in Newton, CT. because that just makes me feel more depressed! The sad part of the situation is that when all is said and done, nothing will probably change to prevent events like this from happening in the future because of how powerful a lobby the NRA is.

Anyway, I was so upset the day after (11/12) our heartfelt loss, that I got on my mountain bike to try to *ride out* the grief. Well, I overcooked a corner, clipped a tree with my handlebars and ended up dislocating my finger - so much so that it looked like it was pointing about 40 degrees due west when I held my hand up….and worse of all, sat in the Emergency Room for over four hours to have someone take an x-ray to make sure I didn’t fracture the joint itself and then have someone else snap that sucker back into place.

I’ve got a low-rez paper pic the tech gave me of the x-ray of my hand that I scanned onto my computer for posterity, which may be good to post and serve as a visual illustration for what is not good decision-making (crazy-fast riding), when in the acute stage of grief. Writing is a lot easier on my body, for sure. Although… the orthopedist told me that the original x-ray had a resolution of 2048 × 1680 × 12 bits, which may not be worthy of this thread.

Hey, I just thought of a 4K tie-in. When I eventually go back for a follow-up x-ray, which, like the last one, you can think as being ‘mastered’ in 2048 × 1680 × 12 bits, perhaps the orthopedic surgeon can show it to me in 4K, if he gets one of these displays in his office….
