I was thinking that before we close this thread and since all the 2012 Disney BDs have been released, Why not reflect on this past year by making a poll? Here are the questions:
Best Disney BD of the year Worst Disney BD of the year Best Disney BD cover art Worst Disney BD cover art Best Supplements Worst Supplements Best Transfer Worst Transfer Most surprising announcement (the one you didn’t see coming). All Disney Titles (live-action/animation) including its subsidiaries (Pixar, Marvel, etc.) are eligible. The only requirement is that they were released this year. I’ll go first: Best Disney BD: Finding Nemo Worst Disney BD: Home on the Range. Best Cover Art: The Rescuers/The Rescuers Down Under Worst Cover Art: Pocahontas Best Supplements: Finding Nemo Worst Supplements: The Great Mouse Detective Best Transfer: Lady and the Tramp, Pixar (Brave, FN) Worst Transfer: Home on the Range. Most Surprising announcement: The Great Mouse Detective. |

Worst Disney BD cover art: Finding Nemo 3D/Steelbook (Okay, I know we all want original-theatrical, but history isn't always kind: Can we finally put it behind us that the original "Big scary closeup of Bruce" marketing may have actually been Eisner's villainous attempts to sabotage Nemo's marketing in the theaters, to pull the rug out from under Pixar's threats of independence if the movie was a hit? The mass-market cover has lovable Crush in the streams, and think that's what kids remember; I don't want Eisner's weaselry immortalized on the permanent-copy cover.) Best Supplements: Lady & the Tramp Second Screen Worst Transfer: Great Mouse Detective (do-over!) Most surprising announcement (the one you didn’t see coming): Treasure Planet AND Home on the Range, first off the back-catalog list. "Some of the last shall be first", and on the same week, too. |

Regarding The Rescuers Down Under using a film source rather than the CAPS file... I finally got the Blu-ray and I'm wondering if they decided to go with a film transfer in order to have a bit more visual continuity with the first film?
I'm in no way sticking up for it, I would have much rather had a pristine version of the film from it's original source, but maybe the thought process is that it would have been a huge variation in picture clarity between the two films if they used an old film file for one and CAPS for the other. Just a thought. |

On another note, isn't this the only thread we really have for the rescuers thats a main thread for it. We aren't going to have a thread if we delete or lock this one. |

Still think Fantasia was unbelievably good, though. Actually, I would rate all of the Disney restorations of the Classic Gold Era five stars (Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty) if not for a few pesky exceptions.. - I cannot get over the soft, fazed shots in Snow White even if they are part of the source material.. - Cinderella's transfer looks nice in motion, but like said before they didn't just clean this one, they violently threw acid over it. ![]() |

![]() ![]() If they did, it would be logically correct, as those two really are direct sequels, whereas Fantasia 2000 and the original are not. Fantasia 2000 is in fact a follow up, show casing how much farther their skills had evolved over the last 60 years, so of course it should come from as good a source as they had, i.e. CAPS. However, in case of RDU, I think it's more likely that most of the original CAPS files are gone. I believe that at first, CAPS was only meant as a system to create a source on film, not to be the source itself. Soon after, that notion changed of course. Disclaimer: this is NOT a fact. ![]() |
