Thumbs up HFR 3d The future?

Interesting diverse reactions to the new format, I was thwarted by a projector issue, so saw standard 24fps 3d which was really satisfying. for those that have seen it, how would you rate it?.

5 stars. I want all 3D movies to be filmed in 48FPS. It's something you have to see to believe!

*I saw it IMAX 3D 48FPS

Completely agree. I think the Hobbits, Avatars, and Transformers of the world were made for 48fps. Just unbelievable.

Gave my HFR vote a 4. Looked good, except a few CGI scenes looked animated to me. The 3D was great with this. The way 3D should look.

5 stars. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is, on a visual level, almost a religious cinematic experience. Cinema in the present tense, similar to Michael Mann's lensing of Miami Vice and Public Enemies, but even more advanced and beautiful and intense. It is the future.

I agree. To me it was more lifelike. I felt immersed. I guess PJ knew what he was doing after all

While the clarity of the picture was gorgeous, the flow and movement, in many scenes, was unusual and terribly distracting. It was awfully unnatural.

As I posted in the Hobbit thread, some of the movements seemed to resemble the old black and white videos of peopel who were probably moving normally but the video presents their movements and very fast and "jerky".

Start at the 0:32 mark.

Question, am I the only person to notice this? Perhaps it was simply an issue with the projector/display at my particular theater?

Im going to see this today, so i will keep an eye out, so to speak, haha. So that would be the Benny Hill effect spoken of.

Thanks for the honest responses so far everyone ;-)

Not a huge fan myself. Maybe future films using 48fps will take care to avoid scenes that look too "stagey", but here any sense of fakery would break my suspension of disbelief. I feel HFR has potential for greater immersion in a film, a couple of shots in the Hobbit pretty much gave me vertigo, but I think filmmakers will have to change the way they make movies... the production design, cinematography/lighting, effects, etc, needs to make the percieved reality of what's on screen much more convincing.

Far from it. If it was a projection issue, then it was also a problem at my showing (as well as many others, from the reports I've read). The speed up is particularly noticeable in panning shots or chase scenes. Radagast in his rabbit sled looked downright ridiculous. The effect also made anyone climbing stairs look like they were suddenly hauling ass (like the dwarf king at the very beginning, or Gandalf and Elrond in Rivendell). It really does pull you out of the movie.

I'm not sure if it truly is a projection error or if different people's brains just process the image differently. It seems more folks have noticed these issues then those who claim it looks flawless.

That's what I am starting to believe that it is. Maybe people that play video games it has no neg effects on them.

For 3D I think it is an amazing achievement as there is no longer any ghosting or tearing of the image. High speed action is in full focus now with no motion blur. Something they might actually want to reintroduce as it makes some scenes look down right fake.

I also experienced the 1920's high speed effect. I thought the projectionist hit fast forward for when Bilbo started to write his book. It isn't something to get used to, it is comically jarring.

I see the potential, directors and cinematographers will just need to learn how to shoot for it now.

Glad to know I'm not the only one. Without a doubt, the Radagast/bunny scene was absolutely ridiculous. This "motion" issue conitnued throughout teh movie. I guess I first noticed it at Bagend, when the Dwarves started showing up. Something looked really off and the motion was completely unnatural.

The picture quality is gorgeous and the unmatched by anything I have ever seen... But if this "motion" issue is something that comes with it, they can keep their 48 FPS, because it just ruins the experience.

I think it's just your perception playing tricks. If you pay close attention, people are moving at normal speed, it just conflicts with your brain's idea of how a movie moves so it feels "off". I think the camera movements and the way those scenes are edited also contribute to the effect.

This is what I think is happening.

I really only noticed it on a few occasions, most of which were in the opening scene (Bilbo appeared to be speed walking and it looked really odd when he pulled the book out of the chest). After that, I really only noticed anything on some of the close-ups.

That said, my friend and I agreed that this felt like the same visual leap as what we all had when we first saw a show in HD. It was simply stunning, which greatly outweighed the few small "speed" issues it appeared to have.

wow, really interesting, well I have just finished walking 12km after seeing the film (ahem, buses have reduced time tables on weekends ;-( ). I never picked the high speed issue col. Zombie encountered. sorry I tried like heck to find something, no there really was no anomaly that stood out to me that detracted. for me someone mentioned the Rabbits, and there I could not find issue as well.. Best 3d i have seen, I had no choice but to select a seat straight up 2 rows back from a 45-50ft screen, and I was right there. some of the orcs potruding to the fore tricked my senses.

How awesome was Erebor?

well i'm in the full mark camp, though I can empathize with those who had issues, the bloke next to me had very stressed eyes after an hour, needed to remove his glasses for a few minutes.

Hang on, there was one anomaly I noted, and that was Gandalf's eye seemed to potrude forth in one close up,
[Show spoiler]as he was handing Sting to bilbo

Or, people with "quicker" brains more easily pick up on the flaws of the presentation.
