The Town and Gone Baby Gone were excellent, so I'll be picking this up.

Given its Warner has anyone heard if HMV are doing a Steelbook exclusive ? They seem to do the new Warner films e.g. Dark Knight Rises.

No word yet, but this may get some kind of special release somewhere (the US were very kind to The Town on blu). This was a great flick too - more enjoyable than The Town for me, but not quite up to Gone Baby Gone standards (that movie was brilliant).

Wll be picking this one up for sure - reviews and word of mouth are stellar and it's a great cast. Who could have guessed 10 years ago that Ben Affleck would be one of the best young directors in the world?

I'd never really considered it, but Kevin Smith said something on one of his tours that really cleared the whole issue up for me -- someone like Affleck, who has worked on numerous projects as an actor, has obviously worked with numerous directors; over the course of that time, he has been picking and choosing the good techniques that each director has and applying them to his own "directorial mind".

Not taking anything away from the man -- he really has shone as a director -- but it's an interesting thought.

That's true, but you could say that about any actor with a decent sized filmography. Affleck's advantage, maybe, is having worked both in Michael Bay blockbusters as well as Kevin Smith independents and a lot of different sized films in between.

True, but I still think that there are other actors who have had that experience and still don't make a massive mark as a director. Nobody seemed especially keen on Dustin Hoffman's first film, and look at all the people he's worked with!

It made a big splash critically, but not so much with audiences. I think it depends on what style of films you start to make as well -- with every Affleck film, there's been a touch of the blockbuster (or at least mainstream) mentality that's balanced with an indie intelligence. I think that works just right for him, and I long to see it continue.

I watched this last night...cracking film I wasn't familiar with the (true) story and even though I'd kinda guessed the outcome it still had me glued to the screen till the end. That Mr Affleck is a pretty damn good director! I already have The Town but I still haven't seen Gone Baby Gone, but after watching Argo I ordered GBG straight away. It was also good to be thoroughly entertained by a film, after seeing the snoozefest that was War Horse earlier in the week.

Gone Baby Gone is brilliant as well. It's quite a miraculous turnaround for him really, he was a bit of a joke at one point but he's transformed into a very decent director.

His problem was being a 'celebrity' actor, where the fame part came first in the media's eyes - so all the relationship stuff overshadowed his actual work (he's great in Chasing Amy and Boiler Room). Director is considered a much more 'serious' role - hence the increased respect. The fact that he has done it so well is a credit to him: as you say, Gone Baby Gone is fantastic.

Also, he was the bomb in Phantoms.
