I personally felt the riddle scene was well done, but thought that the glaring omission was the beginning of that part of the chapter, when Bilbo awakes from unconsciousness to find that he is alone in the dark. This is where he is completely alone, totally self-dependent, and has to muster his long-suppressed courage to move forward. IMO this was one of the most important scenes of the entire story, as it was a major stage in the evolution of Bilbo's character, and well... yes, it was left out of the movie.

I have it. It is good, but not up to level of the Art of the Lord of the Rings books. It focuses more on character and costume design than art, which was my main interest. However, it is of high quality binding and construction.

I meant the actual photography, should've been darker. Yes the scene you describe would've been a fantastic addition. I would've loved to have seen that. The scene was just too bright. It's the same problem I had with the Path's of the dead (not the only one) and Shelob's lair. Not dark enough. I wanted to feel blind, hopeless and scared.

The wise wizard did not even bother to check out Bilbo's sword to see it was indeed glowing. Bilbo was probably confused at first wondering why Mithrandir was lying to him. LOL

didnt gandalf say when orcs/goblins are nearby? im sure thats what he said! there are more enemies in tolkiens world then just those .

I haven't read the hobbit so i am not familiar with that scene, Ill be honest with you the major step in Bilbos character I saw as someone who was opened to this world through the movie was

[Show spoiler]Bilbo saving Thorin.

To me thats where he found his courage and perhaps the scene you are describing was left out intentionally due to it taking away from the scene I am describing. I remember Jacksons notes on LOTR where he explained that when they wrote and scripted everything out and dropped it on film, sometimes certain scenes just didnt transcend well into film so they were omitted. Perhaps this is the case here.

yes ive read the book and seen the film, and it makes sense for it to be changed in the movie. The movie version works for me, to be fair ive read the book numerous times and i like a few of the changes that have been made for the film.

the thing is what works on a page dosent alwys work so well on screen.

I take my hat off to Peter jackson and the writers for the 4 films they have given us so far.

I know ill enjoy hobbit even more in its extended form with my feet up at home

There may not be an extended version I know Warners leaked that promo for 2013 releases but then they decided to do the 3rd film. That 3rd film may be all the extended stuff.

If I remember correctly I think the 2nd movie is going to be a lot of the Appendices from the LOTR, with a mixture of some minor hobbit stuff that may or may not have been left out, and the last book Tolkiens son finished.

No, the third film will still be the final part of the story of The Hobbit - mostly the Battle of Five Armies and the aftermath.

I know there was some confusion when the trilogy plan was announced that they were literally bolting an extra film onto the end and the extra filming was all for that but it's not the case. Also the 'leak' of the extended edition came a good while after the news of the three films.

Jackson himself has confirmed that not only will there be an extended edition but that it has already been edited together ready for release.

No, the appendices stuff is included throughout all three films (e.g. all the Necromancer and White Council stuff in this film). The second film will likely included more of Dol Guldur and possibly the battle that took place there but it definitely won't be the main thrust, nor will the Hobbit parts be 'minor'. The Hobbit will still be the main story, as it will be through the whole trilogy. The second film will take us

[Show spoiler]from Beorn's home up to at least Bilbo's meeting with Smaug and probably up to the death of Smaug

. So definitely not minor stuff.

NVM looks like you are correct as well as the previous poster stating that the cut was completed looks like Ian McKellen has already seen it as well.

Peter Jackson is a busy man. When he's not jetting around the globe on press duties – or finishing off The Desolation Of Smaug and There And Back Again – he's assembling the final extended cut of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey for the eventual DVD and Blu-ray release. In fact, as Ian McKellen reveals in the video below, he's already done it.

As well as letting slip that Jackson has got the Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey extended edition cut done and dusted, the much-loved knight also revealed some details on a certain scene that he loved (and wrote) that ended up on the cutting room floor (and then the extended edition, presumably).

As you'll find out from the clip at the top of this story, it sees Gandalf and a young Bilbo enjoying some time together, which begs the question... who played the young(er) Bilbo? All should be revealed come Blu-ray release day.

Then there are the other deleted scenes Jackson is looking forward to showing off when the time comes, and for more details on those – including a mention of a moment in Rivendell where the dwarves get to have some fun at the elves' expense

I'm guessing theatrical of DoS at the end of April 2014, Extended at the end of June 2014 (ready for TaBA on July 18th)

It is a fantastic book. That and the Official Movie guide are very good making of's. The Hardcover, slight visual companion is a waste though and unnecessary.
The first two books are definitely worth checking out if only from the library (like I do)
