True that. At the rate i'm going i'll have the theatrical and EE of the DVD's for LOTR, the theatrical and EE BRD's for LOTR's.

Then, the eventual theatrical BRD release of the 3 Hobbit movies which will come out in May of each year followed by the EE release in Nov or Dec.
Then, the ultimate eventual box set of all 6 films with even more material.
By then they will probably have a new film medium.

well... I like to thing its just the way his hair was at that morning, and by the afternoon Gandalf arrived it was (unintentionally or not) shaped as in Fellowship.

This story is easily stretched across 2 films. They just decided to expand to a 3rd since they had so much additional footage and didn't want us to miss out on all that.
Pretty sure it's not that they wanted you to "miss out" on it -- more that they have a captive fanbase who will buy tickets and videos and extended versions and Special Editions and on and on. There's no reason this was, at max, a 2 movie story. As it is, they could've bloated it out to 4 movies and the LOTR fans would still gladly eat it all up. This 3 movie structure was about money and commerce more than art, no doubt about that IMO.

Absolutely not true. If that were the case then they'd have decided on a trilogy at the start.

Have you seen An Unexpected Journey? Because it's clear from that film that their approach to the story has led to this. Having seen it I have a very hard time imagining how it would have worked as a two-part story with the amount of plot up until the original end point still to go. It would have taken another hour at least to take us up to that point. So it's clear from seeing it that their reasons of having filmed too much story are the real ones.

But hey. This is the internet where there's a conspiracy and a "truth" behind everything. May as well call anyone who believes jackson's reasons 'sheeple' just to really cap it off.

Read the book. You'll find you're wrong. There's plenty of stuff for three movies.

For the second movie they have Beorn, Mirkwood, the spiders, the forest Elves, Laketown, as well as the desolation of Smaug as they explore the ruins of Dale.

The last one is going to be a hum-dinger. *A lot* of stuff happens *after* Smaug meets its fate.

I wish they'd do a longer version of this song somewhere in this trilogy:

Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
To find our long forgotten gold

The dwarves of yore made mighty spells,
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep,
In hollow halls beneath the fells

For ancient king and elvish lord
There many a gloaming golden hoard
They shaped and wrought, and light they caught
To hide in gems on hilt of sword

On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung
The dragon-fire, in twisted wire
They meshed the light of moon and sun

The pines were roaring on the height,
The winds were moaning in the night
The fire was red, it flaming spread
The trees like torches blazed with light

The bells were ringing in the dale
And men looked up with faces pale
The dragon's ire more fierce than fire
Laid low their towers and houses frail

The mountain smoked beneath the moon
The dwarves, they heard the tramp of doom
They fled their hall to dying fall
Beneath his feet, beneath the moon

It's not a huge deal, since the scene is only a minute or 2 long, it just kind of takes me out of the movie a little bit. I may even go see the movie again (maybe more than once). I really wish studios could release movies on DVD/Blu-ray right after they stop showing it in theaters. I hate waiting for them to come out.

As a stand-alone movie, I agree. There is plenty that could be cut from the film, and if this was the only Hobbit movie they were making, I would probably try to do my own fan-edit after buying it. But after seeing the entire trilogy, some of those parts may seem more important to the story. This is why I'll rent the extended version first before buying it; I don't plan to do any double-dipping with this trilogy.

Eh. Bilbo's face and hair being different isn't a huge issue. Though it is noticeable.

Gandalf needs to lay off the pipe weed though. "You haven't aged a day!" Guy's got cataracts.

I just never pictured hobbits having bed head.

Agreed. I'm going to wait and see. The extended edition should have a very slight edge in PQ too given it's likely to be split over two discs ala LOTR EE.

Absolutely! This movie really opened up the background for me and understanding LOTR better. (I've never read any of the books or writings.)

I don't get caught up in those little details. We all know Ian Holme is 12 years older in TABA. Though the wig could have been "puffed up" a little.

Why would Bilbo repeatedly yell for Frodo to answer the door when Gandalf arrives when Frodo clearly told him he was leaving to go wait for the wizard?

I suspect hundreds of such small cracks will show between Hobbit and LOTR. That's okay, as long as it isn't something that is "forgotten" or made up conveniently by the writers (Star Wars has many examples).

I'm mixed on an EE - This film was highly enjoyable, but I still feel it was a little long in the tooth for the first hour, maybe a little less. The other films completing the story as a whole may change my mind, but I really don't know how this film could actually benefit from an extended cut. I'll wait to reserve judgment, of course, but for the first time as far as a Peter Jackson Middle Earth project is concerned, I'm skeptical.

Well to be fair though in FotR there are a few different moments of 'forgetfulness' if you recall. Remember Gandalf asked Bilbo where the ring was and he said it was in the mantelpiece? and it was actually in his pocket? and a gain when he was walking out the door it was still in his pocket, as if he completely forgot literally within those minutes.

I hope they can release this in both 7.1 AND DTS Neo-X 11.1 (so it can some what mirror the astonishing Atmos mix)

Won't be out until Q4? Thought It'd be out sooner. Faster. Such as at 48 FPS...
