Default My Home Theater Man Cave

Yeah, slowly but surely building my HT back to its former glory when I was running KEFs, Emotiva and HSU sub. Divorce sucks. New wife, new life. Upgraded from Onkyo HTIB, to Energy Take Classics, to Polks I bought off a friend for $250 for set. Currently trying to decide to keep Polks and include a set of nice speakers for a dedicated 2 channel setup or upgrade the whole lot. I love this hobby.

Current HT Setup:

Samsung 60" 3D Plasma PN60E550
Sony BDP-CX960 400 Disc Blu-ray changer
TWC DVR cable box
Onkyo receiver TX-nr609
Apple TV
Samsung BD-E5900 3D Blu-ray player
Onkyo C-7030 CD Player
Logitech Harmony One remote
Polk Audio RTi70 Fronts
Polk Audio RTi40 Center
Polk Audio RTi38 Surrounds
SVS PB-1000 Subwoofer
AKG K240MKII Headphones

I do believe Divorce suck, but for some it is a great thing, let me tell ya!!! Lol
Gotten remarried and it has been the best experience of all, and made me be grateful for being married again.

Well, onto the home theater.

You have a nice room, and I think you should look into di/bi-pole speakers for surrounds. Your room looks perfect for them.

Thanks fellas! Thanks for the tip HAMP. I have owned KEF iQ8DS dipole rear surrounds and Polk Audio FXI A4 rear back surrounds (set to bipole). I may look into getting Polk FXI A4s again.

Hello Vico and welcome to the HT galleries. That HT seating looks inviting. How is the SVS performing? I think you are the first one I have seen with the new model.

Thanks, I appreciate the welcome! Here is a short review i posted on another forum about the PB-1000. i really like it, thinking about getting another.

I have had it for several weeks now and it is great with movies and music. It was a bit boomy until broken but now this thing gets low and tight. I watched Total Recall the other day and the bass can be really felt especially in the beginning scenes of the movie. I have my Polk RTi 70s crossover settings at 60 hz and sub crossover at 80 hz for movies and PB-1000 on LFE. I listen to jazz, dubstep, eagles, etc. and the bass is very controlled. For music listening I run the RTis full range and crossover the PB-1000 at its lowest setting. I believe its 50 hz. I also have it sitting on a Auralex Gramma which tightens things even further. I am very pleased with the sub and SVS.

What do you do when you want to sit down and watch a movie in from your collections but can't decide which one? I ask the wife and I get the classic frustrating answer, "whichever one you want to watch". Ugh!

I have decided to replace the Polks with KEF Q700s, Q200c and KEF Q800ds for surrounds. Owned KEFs in the passed and I like the sound. Will be several months before I get them because I will have to save up. I'm curious. I assume a lot of you are middle class folk like me with wife, kids, bills. What do you do to get the funds for a speaker/sub/home theater purchase? Do you save? Do you wait for a bonus? tax return? retirement check?

Personally, I think saving is the best way to get funds instead of using money from a bonus or tax return. I try and save whatever money I get back from taxes or use it towards other bills. Saving will also help moving forward after you've done your upgrade. Cutting out things from your current budget or being better with money in order to save for something (like HT upgrades) is always a good idea. After you've done your upgrades, the money you then save can go towards other things like retirement or an emergency fund.

Best thing is to be happy with what you have. I know it's hard to do at times especially when you see other people's setups' or upgrade plans. It's certainly a hobby that can easily take over other things. I know my current set up isn't great but it's also not bad. I've learned to love it enough not to upgrade (yet).

Blue, you make a lot of really good points. You hit the nail on the head in regards to being happy with what you have. I struggle with this myself. My biggest problem is that I know what sounds really good and I don't have that yet. My wife doesn't get it. She says it all sounds great to her and for some ok sound is good enough. I just know I won't be happy until I get the quality I am used to. I definitely agree saving is best and no amount of personal satisfaction is worth going into debt. Thanks for insight.

Looks good and your HT would look (and sound) even better with your planned KEF speakers.

Thanks ManUtd! Your HT setup is insanely cool! I will post my impressions of the KEFs when I get them though it will probably be several months.

I've done my share of upgrades over the past 2 years and was fortunate enough to get away with my current set up with only paying $400 for all the upgrades (granted my front three I bought used), so I know how it feels. My system is to a point where for me to upgrade again, it would certainly cost me at least $4K less what I can get for my current gear. Right now I'm thinking about upgrading my 2 channel set up.

-Emma, wife's favorite movie. Without my wife, there would be no Man Cave. Thanks babe.-

Man, What a great thing!!! my wife supported me one hundred percent in this hobby, like your wife to you, and that feels great! right?! makes you enjoy even more when you see one of your favorite movies or one of hers.
