It was $24.99 around Black Friday. I made sure to jump on it since the single disc was still $18 at the time.

what? okay, Canada gets screwed over when it comes to movies. Walmart has it on sale and the box set is still $45. i bought it new for a few dollars less but still, almost double i thought our dollar was usually at par! can't even stop buying movies in protest as there is a bunch of Trek coming out this year.

Canadians have been complaining about this since BD's inception and for good reason since you are correct in that the Canadian dollar is on par with the U.S. dollar. I can't give a reason for this other than greed.

What's the big attraction? The Disc 2 features have next-to-nothing to do with Casablanca?

You Must Remember This: The Warner Bros. Story (Disc 2, SD, 289 minutes): The Ultimate Edition's second Blu-ray disc kicks off with a sprawling five-hour documentary from director Richard Schickel and narrator Clint Eastwood which charts the course of the rise and... erm, further rise of one of the largest, most successful studios in Hollywood history. Chapters include "A Rising Power (1923-1937)," "War and Peace (1937-1949)," "Age of Anxiety (1950-1969)," "Starting Over (1970-1990)" and "A Living Tradition (1988-2008)"

The Brothers Warner (Disc 2, HD, 94 minutes): "It is not the challenge of dollars, it is the challenge of ideals and ideas. If the producers of pictures see only the dollar, then I believe those production efforts will fail." Meet Harry Warner and his brothers, the dreamers and businessmen who laid the foundation so many filmmakers and filmfans rest on today. This terrific companion delves further into the building blocks of Warner Brothers and Hollywood as a force of cinematic nature, and highlights how far studios have come and how far they have to go, creatively and financially.

Jack L. Warner: The Last Mogul (Disc 2, SD, 58 minutes): If Harry was the heart of the Warner Bros. machine, Jack was the spirit. Entertainer, stand-up comic, risk-taker, power player and movie mogul, Jack Warner propelled his studio into the future.

You could ask the same thing about why Warner included them with Casablanca in the first place. They're really intriguing docs. I wouldn't mind buying a release with all of them included, but you can't find them anywhere else on BD aside from the Casablanca UCE

I bought the standard casing for $9.99 at the Best Buy sale today. Woo hoo!

I had considered waiting until they doubled this movie with The African Queen, but this was a good sale and I like look of the stand-alone disc for such an essential flick on my favorites list.

So much for minimizing January purchases, but this was a good sale price for such a highly-reviewed restoration of one of my favorite movies.

Unfortunately, the Blu-ray case for Casablanca was jacked up. The cracks in the case were not noticeable when I bought it, but the case fell apart in my hands when I removed the shrink wrap. I replaced it with one of my spare Dynex cases, though, and it looks just like new.

starting to think buying UK is the best. ordered last 2 seasons of Twilight Zone - ended up getting the UK versions of seasons 2-5 for around $40 each but had to pay that much for a used copy of season 1(and seasons 2 and 3 were orderd here in Canada). too many movies like that here that seem to be a lot cheaper everywhere else. i understand it takes a little more effort to do that French/English packaging but not all of them have that - usually things like Casablanca only have English anyways since it is a box set.

Exactly. I don't see why they were ever included with Casablanca - a paucity of actual Casablanca extras to justify the box set? Surely, more to the point would've been stories about Bogart and the rest of the cast (perhaps on disc 1). I assume you have these? They sure are long. Two of the three would be fine on upscaled DVDs since they're only in SD. I don't know how much the 3rd needs Blu-ray. But ... I also don't know if they're available elsewhere on DVD, but I do believe at least one of them has aired on TCM-HD.

Amazon says my copies of Casablanca and Ben-Hur (along with a totally incongruous guilty pleasure - The Ugly Truth) are Shipping Soon. Can't wait to see Casablanca again. I've never owned it in any format, only watched it on TCM.

I don't own them, but I watched a bit of The Warner Bros. Story on TV before (parts of it are on youtube too). I haven't seen the others yet. Some of them do have DVD releases from Warner so it is likely that they just included them to fill out the UCE a bit more, even though it wasn't really needed considering how much is already included on the first disc.

I watched my single-disc copy yesterday. This transfer is really something else. It's as though the movie took place on a sound stage in my living room.
