Yup, 48fps or 60fps would be a far better improvement. The time for the standard to evolve past 24fps is well past due.

The whole thing is complete nonsense and just marketing blurb. It means nothing and will make no difference to the final disks. These will still be 1080p/24 at best.
More interesting news from sony is the 4k movie distribution service coming in the summer. |

This could have a very positive effect. If it encourages studios to release 'premium' blu rays then we might get some more decent transfers of catalogue titles that have been fobbed off with dated masters.

More likely it'll encourage them to put new stickers on the movies that already have 4K sources and keep doing business as usual.

What more "encouragement" is needed? Others are already exceeding 4K, with or without Sony slapping stickers on Blu-rays gathering dust in their warehouses. |

Weird to think I've been repping the movie through my avatars off and on for four years now. |

Sony's putting their new label on The New 4K Trend, which may or may not happen, and the more they push it in frustrated 3D non-buyers' faces, the more it might not. 4K isn't its own isolated format yet, it's just a better mastering--I've already got 4K on my Baraka and Chitty/Bang disks, and while it looks clean enough, it's just the Blu-ray of the movie I was going to buy anyway. And even then, I go for the complete package with extras, but so far, I haven't had a choice on store shelves. Quote:

I was under the impression that blu ray as we have it now will be the last physical disc format. Having said that, if the next step is 4K, with expected sizes of 200GB+, how is that going to work on a download streaming system? Of course it could be massively compressed, who knows.

The problem is, and my point being, there are many resolutions above 1080p. Case in point, 4k. So 1080p is not and has never been Full HD. Movies are shown in theaters in about 4k. You could go higher than 4k. Basically, resolutions can go as high as they want, assuming they have the capable equipment. Full HD suggests that you're getting the highest possible resolution that exists. So it just always looked stupid, to me, to see Full HD on their products. And then, of course, every company jumped on the retard wagon and started printing it on their boxes.

Anyway, my point in the previous post was that Sony have been routinely making movies in 4K, which means many of their current Blu-rays are already derived from 4K masters. Which means that this 'mastered in 4K' announcement is pure, unadulterated marketing sizzle. Stay away from the hype, Carol Anne!!! |

I want a new Blu ray of Gattaca scanned to 4K and with DTS-HD Master Audio.
Sony wake up, I want to buy your movie for the 5th time (LaserDisc, 1998 DVD, SuperBit DVD, 2.008 Special Edition Blu ray, and now if they're up to, a new Blu ray from a 4K scan). |

Probably (or by Disney in the future), but do you honestly think Fox or Disney will spend the money to remaster them in 4K?

ROFL. I actually was thinking Superbit before I clicked the thread. Really hated those for being more expensive for a barebones release with only a half bitrate DTS track and very slight PQ improvement. As for these, it's a little too early for me to really care. As long as the new blus are derived from 4k and don't go up in price, I'm happy.
