United Kingdom HMV Promotion?

I visited my local HMV this morning and there is a large amount of DVD's/CD's and Blu-Rays with stickers on with blue crosses.
I asked a assistant what these were for and all she knew/would say was that they were for a promotion that starts Friday.
Having a quick look round the store I would hazard a guess that at least 2/3 of stock is so labelled.
Anybody have any ideas what this promotion is?

Blue Cross sale, I'm guessing 25% off.

Press release:

HMV’s fantastic BLUE CROSS SALE starts Saturday

HMV is delighted to announce to its customers that it is launching a BLUE CROSS SALE this Saturday, 12th January 2013.

The huge price promotion, which is expected to run for at least the duration of the month in over 230 stores nationwide across the UK and Ireland as well as online at http://hmv.com/hmvweb/home.do, will see an amazing 25 per cent saving offered on the marked purchase price of thousands of selected CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, box sets, games (including pre-played) and technology products, such as headphones, as well as books and other items stickered with the famous blue cross.

This fantastic New Year deal, which follows on from HMV’s popular Boxing Day BIG SALE, offers music, film, games and tech enthusiasts on the look out for unmissable bargains yet more added-value from HMV, including on recent chart releases and across a wide range of catalogue titles that have not been available in a special price promotion for some time.

ENDS

My thoughts exactly in the TV dvd section especially there are barely any un-stickered titles.
I don't buy a lot from my local HMV only titles that are competitively priced which does happen from time to time.
Problem is in my local town HMV is the last one that sells DVD's/Blu-rays and if that closes I will be forced to shop exclusively on line.

I know this the problem.

HMV are the last place you can actually go in and browse a decent selection of catalog titles as well as new release and steelbooks and the odd limited/collectors edition.

You don't get any of that at your Tesco or ASDA. They stock certain new releases and thats your lot.

Why the government have done this to the entertainment sector is beyond me, how can we start spending if all theyre doing is taking away our options?

House of Fraser/Army and Navy also have a Blue Cross sale. Its just a new thing, not going bust just yet. Besides, with Play going in March R.I.P, HMV should get a boost

You're right, but this just feels like the last throw of the dice. Everyone knows that they are in big trouble financially.

I don't think you can blame the government on this one. HMV were really slow and complacent in how they reacted to online shopping, supermarkets and the decline of physical media.

I might be in the same boat shortly. Which will be a shame in one sense as the staff at my local branch are very nice indeed.

However even with a blue cross some titles will still be cheaper online. For example Bram Stoker's Count Dracula has been priced at £14 instore. Even 25% off renders buying it online common sense at just £8.

I was in HMV and they guy behind the till said it was only on for a week!!!

I feel sorry for the guys who had to label half the stock. Hate to think how long it took. Not as bad as in Oxford Street though.

No Blu-rays labelled though.

Having said that, HMV overcharge anyway. I mean for example: The Expendables 2 is marked at £18 in my local HMV - 25% off means its still £13.50 - Amazon only charge £15 with free delivery... no wonder they're loosing money...

My local has about 7/8 of Blu rays outside of their 3 for 20 in the sale, thats not including TV Blus and WWE Blus with a blue cross sticker on it.

I don't know what any of this is to do with the Government. The High Street is suffering because people are shopping on-line at places like Amazon which can sell cheaper because they don't have the same overheads. In any case, this HMV sale isn't a firestorm.

It didn't actually say anything on them. It was all a bit mysterious.

The Blue X fairy had been in the night.

Im sure every store is going to be slightly different. My local in Guildford had what looked like about 1000 CDs with a blue x sticker and same or more DVDs with the sticker.

No Blu Rays.

Also asked bloke behind till, I was price checking a pre release title Piranha (prefer to pick up sometimes rather than online order if same price) This sale starts Friday, not Saturday as some have mentioned.

Anyone holding back a voucher or planning to go at the weekend may miss a few bargains if this is a popular sale.
