The biggest surprise is Bigelow and Affleck not making it in, but the biggest disappointment I've heard is no DiCaprio in Django Unchained.

Interesting list of directing nominees. If one assumes that the Best Picture winner comes from the same movies that got directing nods, then that likely only leaves Lincoln and Silver Linings Playbook as the potential winners.

Skyfall got robbed IMO. It was an inferior film to Casino Royale, but it should've received a couple of acting nods for Bardem and Dench. That franchise has been going strong for 50 years, Hollywood. Show it some love for God's sake!

Good to see DeNiro getting an Oscar nod. What has it been? 21 years? I think Cape Fear was his last nomination. I haven't seen Silver Linings Playbook yet, but I'll definitely have to check it out given that it seems to have a decent shot at Best Picture if Lincoln doesn't take it.

I really wish the Academy would get off its high horse about ignoring action movies though(assuming you don't count Zero Dark Thirty). Ok, The Dark Knight Rises wasn't as great as its predecessor. But if not that flick, they could've nominated Skyfall or The Avengers, both of which got nearly universal acclaim from critics and audiences and grossed over a billion worldwide. Seriously, stop just nominating dramas.

You sure about that? It's either Lawrence or Chastain I guess, but the latter has gotten a lot of run for her performance. She nearly won the Oscar for The Help a few years ago, so she's got the makeup factor going for her. She's a lot older than Lawrence which means she may not have as many opportunities to win, so that could work in her favor with voters. And she's a chick in a male-dominated movie(and genre) which might impress the Academy.

Does the Academy have something against DiCaprio? Dude also got snubbed for Shutter Island and Inception two years ago. I thought for certain he'd be nominated for one of those.

One tiny little difference. Affleck already has an Oscar on his mantle.

The last time Best Director/Picture winners weren't the same was back in 2006.

Crash won Best Picture and Ang Lee won Best Director for Brokeback Mountain.

Even with that though it's still between Lincoln and Silver Linings, which is sad because the other nominees are pretty much pointless.

The thing with DiCaprio is messed up. I don't know what he has to do to win an oscar. Way more memorable than Jones and Arkin. And I know they were all different performances and DiCaprio's was more 'show offy', but Arkin just wasn't oscar worthy. It's typical academy giving courtesy to one of the vets.

Sad that Bigelow didn't get nominated for best director. Her film was better directed rather than being a best picture.

Sad that Bardem didn't get nominated for Skyfall.

Shame for The Dark Knight Rises to not get nominated for sound or special effects.

A shame that Affleck didn't get nominated for Best director.

Pretty cool that Amour was nominated for Best Picture and Best foreign film.

Lincoln works better as a Best Picture nominee, not as a Best Direction nominee - there was really nothing special to how it was directed.

As much as I love Les Mis songs, I hope Adele takes best song for Skyfall.

Very pleased that Beasts of the Southern Wild got so much attention, definitely deserved. Shame there wasn't more love for Moonrise Kingdom. Other than that a strong bunch in a year with lots of solid choices to choose from.

I'm really surprised that it got nothing at all. I thought it would be a shoe-in for techinical nominations.

It doesn't happen often. Spielberg himself has some experience in that area with the infamous Shakespeare in Love Best Picture win in 1998. Other than that, I think Traffic and Gladiator in 2000 and Chicago and The Pianist in 2002 are the only other recent instances of director/picture splits.

And again unless I'm mistaken, the last time a Best Picture winner failed to even secure a Best Director nomination was Driving Miss Daisy in 1989. So barring that happening again for the first time in 23 years, it's Lincoln or Silver Linings.

You know, technically he WAS nominated. A producer credit for Best Picture. Argo is probably a long shot for that award, but if it pulls off the upset, he'll get an Oscar.

That's odd, earlier they had different songs listed on IMDB. I mentioned it in the Oscar predictions thread how surprising it was that Skyfall and Suddenly weren't nominated.

Edit: This is what IMDB originally listed as the Best Song nominees:
Chasing Ice (2012): J. Ralph("Before My Time")
Life of Pi (2012): Mychael Danna, Bombay Jayshree("Pi's Lullaby")
Paul Williams Still Alive (2011): Paul Williams("Still Alive")
Stand Up Guys (2012): Jon Bon Jovi("Not Running Anymore")
Ted (2012): Walter Murphy, Seth MacFarlane("Everybody Needs a Best Friend")

Screw the oscars. No nominations for leo,and samuel l for django. Or nothing for which I consider the most underated movie and performance of the year... The Grey. Liam neeson was amazing and deserved the best actor oscar this year. And tarantino again gets snubed. What a joke.
