I saw this and its basically our version of the MoC release with a few minor differences. I still went for the MoC release as I love their presentation and it matches my other MoC titles.

I ended up getting this version on DVD because I thought there wouldn't be too much difference between the quality of the image between the two formats. Please tell me I am not wrong.
It was Moroder's Metropolis from 1984 that got me into the film and because all I had were crappy VHS copies of the film I couldn't pass up getting a fan made restoration of Moroder's Metropolis about two years ago, BEFORE it was announced that it would be released officially. |

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCom...etropolis2.htm That, plus the score is rendered in 5.1 lossless too so there are a number of selling points. Definitely worth the upgrade. |

I believe you are terribly wrong. The bluray is a marked improvement over the DVD edition, I too have the Moroder DVD version. The age of a film doesn't necessarily dictate how well it will look on bluray. 35mm film and even 16mm has a resolution in of HD resolution. If the film in question is restored properly, the presentation should be excellent. Good examples of this are Casablanca, Lawrence Of Arabia, Citizen Kane, Wizard Of Oz and The Ten Commandments for a start.

Anyway, unfortunately you are wrong. Metropolis looks stunning for the most part on blu-ray. There's brief scenes throughout that look god awful and have heavy black streaks and all kinds of damage all over it but that's just the footage that was lost for a very, very long time and I'm really happy they were included because it makes the story more coherant. So for the most part it looks beautiful and is a huge step up from it's dvd counterpart. There is great fine detail on display much of the time which is nowhere to be found on dvd. I recommend the MoC release if you decide to sell your dvd and replace it on blu-ray. The MoC release comes with a thick booklet and an Audio Commentary. Those are wonderful examples. While it's obviously not as old as those titles, The Twilight Zone is another great example. It's just a sci-fi show from the late 50's, early 60's but the restorative work that's been done to the show is simply mind boggling. It's a whole step ahead of "impressive". The Twilight Zone looks better on blu-ray than a good deal of big budget hollywood movies being made today look on blu-ray. So yeah, it really does not matter how old a film is. If it's shot on 35mm or 16mm film and it's preserved well, the results can be beautiful, often staggering. |
