Germany German releases worth buying? Help please.

I'm looking to buy the German special edition of The Loved One's. The only problem is that the shipping charges for a single item sucks pretty bad but it works out pretty well if you order multiple things.

So, I was wondering if you guys could give me some recommendations on german blu-ray releases worth buying.

Here are some I've bought. I have a region free player in the US so I don't have to worry about that. You are in Australia so you're in the same region as Germany. I've gotten most of these from Germany because they're not available in the US.

The Killing Fields
The Howling
Scanners
Strange Days
The Talented Mr Ripley
Open Range
The Painted Veil
1492: The Conquest of Paradise
Warlock
Soldier Blue

(Quality varies)

I have three German releases: The English Patient, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer and The Young Victoria. All are very good quality.

Yeah, I know. Glad to hear there's a new one coming. At least I didn't pay very much for the first one.

German Perfume is DTS-HD HR. French is DTS-HD MA.

Yes, but the thread's title is German releases worth buying.

Which is why I didn't include Perfume in my list. Because the French release is better.

I don't understand what's happening. I haven't said you are wrong. I think Perfume is a German release worth buying. You don't. I'm sorry we disagree. Friends?

I had already deleted the post you quoted. I overreacted.

I'm not saying the German BD is not worth buying. It's quite good. I bought it a few years ago when it was the only option. I've since bought the French disc because of the lossless audio.

I love the film and want the best version.

And I'm just trying to give the OP the best information and options.

Yes, friends.

If you're OK with watching a movie subbed, you should get

Tampopo

My favourite Japanese movie of all times, and that includes all the Kurosawa and Ghibli stuff. Although not advertised and not included in the main menu, the German disc has English subs.

Restored version of Fritz Lang's "M":

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/M-Blu-ray/18091/

This restoration was done after the criterion BD was made.

It also includes a bunch of docs, all with English subtitles.

I already own the criterion and MoC releases, not really interested in buying M again. The only docs that are worth watching are the two part documentaries, both of which are in SD on a dvd. Everything else doesn't include english subs.

Michael Mann's 'Ali' has recently been released in Germany - I've just got it and it's excellent quality. The audio is DTS MA 5.1. If you choose the English language version, you even get English subtitles for the brief scene with Mobutu.

The only downside is that it's the original theatrical cut, not the director's cut, and there are no extras.

Here's the Amazon.de link:

Some of my favourite movies have only been released on German blu rays. Three of the best in terms of picture and sound quality are on the 3L label -
Running Scared (which to my eyes is reference standard pq), 11:14 and horror movie The Abandoned (titled "Verlassenen).
3L also relased a good print of Van Damme thriller Until Death which has lossless audio unlike the rubbish UK release.

Studio Canal recently released two discs which are far better in terms of extras/features/picture quality than the equivalent US/UK discs as in The Yards and Copland - lots of extras and both cuts of each of the movies on each of the single discs with excellent picture quality.

Most releases from Kinowelt, Concorde and Universum are top quality although Concorde in particular, although subtitle free (except the Mothman Prophecies. Why??) will burn in German captions in certain circumstances - this happens in the following discs ( for example a road sign translation, newspaper headline, written prolouge etc) minor irritaions on otherwise excellent discs -
Whisper ( road sign translation)
The Relic (Das Relikt) (calendar date translation)
Mr Brooks ( blacmail letter translation and written movie prolouge)
The Hunted (Die Stunde des Jagers) ( Serbian army dialouge subtitled in German).
Limitless - i know its only 30 seconds longer but the unrated cut is included in excellent picture qulaity

Two good discs from Universum are Mindhunters and Room 1408 (Zimmer 1408) Both the director and theatrical cuts are included for Room 1408 .

Strange Days is not available elsewhere and the disc from Kinowelt has decent picture and excellent audio.

Could anyone comment on the German Open Range release in regards to the audio. I believe the cover states DTS-HR but I've been reading on the net, without a definite either way that it's actually DTS-MA (This is the English track, by the way)
