Batman Forever at least has some positive aspects.

Tommy Lee Jones was fantastic as Two Face. I actually think his character was great in the movie. But sadly his role was cut down so we could get more of Jim Carey's hamfisted Riddler.

Batman and Robin however was complete dreck. Blarg.

Personally, I think the only good ones were Batman (the first Tim Burton one) and Batman Begins. Batman Returns was okay, but the others were just terrible, IMO.

I liked Batman, Batman Returns and even Batman Forever to an extent....Jim Carrey did well in that role...and Kilmer wasn't bad at all...at all..it's just Schumacker started the process of fagging up Batman in that movie and nailed it down in Batman and Robin...

and obviously Batman Begins is my favorite...it depicts Batman as I think he is intended to be seen...as will TDK...

My memory of Returns was:
A) Yes, Tim, you're misogynist and have to insultingly kissup to whatever your ideas of "persecuted feminism" are. We GET it. (And if we didn't, we sure did after "Alice".)
and
B) Can we get Danny DeVito to play the Penguin again without Tim's slime-dribbling sewer obsessions because Burton didn't think the character was "interesting" enough? DeVito and the screenwriter absolutely nailed the canny, sardonic, delusion-of-elegance comics character on their own, until Goth-Boy had to go and dump his own ideas on everybody's parade.

And even though Jim's hamming-it-up was standard for a Joel Schumacher Batman (qv. Uma Thurman in B&R), we just took it in stride as Carrey Doing His Thang...Jones' Two-Face was good, BF just didn't have the first clue of to do with him.
Still I remember the feeling in the audience of a great sense of ding-dong-the-witch-is-dead relief that this wasn't Burton's one more time.

(And yes, so the thread's necro-bumped...But hey, it's on disk by now, isn't it?)

I guess I'm in the minority, but I really, really like "Batman Returns." Saw it in the theater and we imported the UK Blu a year-or-so ago. Thought the dialogue between Pfifer and Keaton was great, loved the gothic look, etc. etc.

Joel Schumacher couldn't direct himself out of a paper bag, that's why. The only movie of his I ever liked was The Lost Boys.

To be fair to Schumacher, the changes in direction and tone for the last two Batman films were due to studio pressure. They'd gotten a lot of heat for how dark Batman Returns was and wanted to lighten it up some for Batman Forever. And then wanted Batman & Robin to be even more 'Toyetic' to sell action figures.

I saw Batman Returns in the theatre when it came out. I have watched it a couple times in the last 20 years and still cannot change my opinion on it. I really do not like the film. It is horrible, the penguin is a horrible villain, and I cannot stand Burton and DeVito's take on the character. I also hated Catwoman, I may be in the small minority here but I also hate the character, and Burton and Pfeiffers take on it turned me off wholly. The whole movie just turned me off. That said, Keaton was a great Batman, and Batman was a great movie, I just do not like Batman Returns at all.

I remember seeing all the Batman films in the theater except Batman & Robin. I remember not being impressed with Returns as much as Batman. I think it's an ok film with alot of gothic overtones. The sets are definetly an improvement over Batman which used obvious miniature models for alot of the scenes. I think in that regard Returns is a better film. I think it's enjoyable but nothing that really blows you away.

Batman Begins was solely intended as a Batman only story, like Legends of the Dark Knight "Shaman", with a couple subplot characters. It was never intended to give background stories or origins for any character except Batman. Unlike the Burton films which depict the motivations for the antagonists, Nolan scraps these plots and focuses only on the main character. I personally love the Batman character so this is what really made BB stand out for me as a unique film like Superman.

Agree 100%.... I enjoy the Burton films, but the Nolan films are my personal favorite ones out of all the Batman movies.

Anything with Christopher Walken is pretty much a win in my book. So, I liked Batman Returns. Also, Michelle Pfeiffer wasn't that bad in it either.
