I also love Star Wars and Star Trek. Not sure I buy into that most people only like one or the other.

Its like bloods and crips sometimes between trek and SW fans i could never understand this. If anything the sci fi genre benefited greatly from both .

Totally willing to give Abrams a chance here but I am concerned that he will go too far into his own style. Since Star Trek was a reboot, I was okay with him pretty much making it his own. This is a continuation of an already 6 part story. I don't want if to be radically different in tone and style. That's one of the big problems I have with Quantum of Solace. It's a continuation of the Casino Royale storyline but the two are completely different in style and don't work back to back.

Oh I agree.... I happen to like both, myself, but I do....sadly have friends who are staunch supporters of one or the other.

A small example from college went like this, ST First Contact came out. I was in a ST viewing club, we all got tickets and a bunch of new people came along. As we waited in line it started "I'm not here for this p*ssy trek sh*t...I'm only here to see the SW trailer." it continued for an hour. After the movie, all the way back it was "That was the best trailer ever! SW trailer this, SW trailer that... what movie was that sh*t." It was awkward and got contentious. Every con I go to I see some of this. Now while that was quite some time ago...to this day though, any Trek fans and SW's fans that friends of mine pan each other. Sometimes it's very civil but times it's like a cat fight and can be awkward. It's no indication of the fandom as a whole but there is a majority that feel a certain way.... A recent example involved the reboot and how insepid it was, now the others have already started firing back. Got a text this morning, "JJ stands for JarJar.....SW VII: Attack of the LensFlare.....SW SuperVII : Rise of the Binks!" It is...what it is....

From I'm seeing on my other boards it's not too bad yet but it seems the flame wars are sparking....

Though I'll say this the worst fight I ever saw, was one that resulted in an actual fight. It was Babylon 5 and ST : DS9 fans... I was out of there in 30 seconds....

So excited about this. I'm a lifelong Star Wars fan and NEVER had a even an inkling of interest in Star Trek UNTIL Abrams version came along. Because of his film, I've now purchased the original Star Trek films boxset and plan on getting the series as well.

I have loved just about everything Abrams has had a hand in (Lost is my favorite TV show of all time), so you could imagine my excitement regarding the possibilities of what he may do with Star Wars!

P.S. The lens flare jokes need to stop as well, it was mildly amusing the 1st time, after the 50th one, not so much.

Although not officially confirmed by the people involved, Hollywood Reporter and Variety have stated they have confirmed through their sources. To me those trade papers carry much more weight.

Also we haven't heard an official denial at this point. The Zak Synder thing was denied within 24h of the story.

I'm guessing that the reason for this is getting out of the long term deal at Paramount for Trek. I highly doubt that Disney and Kathleen Kennedy are going to want his efforts divided between the two franchises once he is done with the current work on new Trek movie.

Was JJ or his production company committed to another Trek movie after this one?

I understand your concern, but as someone said earlier, Lucas and Kennedy will be breathing down his neck, or any other director that decides to take Star Wars on, so I doubt there will be that much room for creativity. I'm sure J.J or whoever will add their own artistic flare, but I don't think it'll be much different from what we've seen before.

With Star Trek, it was essentially a reboot using an alternative timeline, giving him some degree of artistic freedom.

I take the Micky out of the lens flare business, but Mission Impossible III didn't really have many and it was well shot etc.

I'll repeat - why does everyone assume Abrams is going to direct 8 and 9 as well? This could be just a one picture deal.

There is plenty of stories to use here too that he would have artistic freedom. As I mentioned before he could go with the NJO timeline or even waaaaaay farther back like the game KOTOR and let us see Revan vs the likes of Bane, Sion or Nihilus. Now THAT would be awesome.

Nah, that was the truth, Foggy. I was there. It was me, him, Goofy and Spielberg and we were drinking. Speilberg said he'd do it, and then asked if we'd seen; Super 8. Goofy hadn't, and I liked it and wanted to watch it again, so we went inside. During the movie, Spielberg said, and I quote; "People say I'm a great director. I'm not going to argue with that, but I've got nothing on JJ Abrams."

Sorry, I guess he forgot to mention that bit.

I hope that he will do all three. That way they'll all have the same feel and continuity.

Episode 4-6 had different directors, and they had the same feel/continuity.
