Good grief man, that is amazing! I'd really like to see what you have in depth.

What a library!

I bought one of these 208 disc binders for some of my DVDs a while back, stored the boxes in the loft. I took a couple of pics of the spines in alphabetical order before I did it, that way I could bring that up on my PC or phone and quickly scan across. Also typed up a list, and printed that off.

Not quite ready to do this with my blu-rays yet, but I have been out of space for a while now.

It was a bit of a pain in the arse to change them (i had approx 250 when started to change the cases), but worth it for the extra space

For Blu-rays I store all my amarays in horizontal position, for my shelves it creates a lot more space doing that. My box-sets, slipcovers and steels are in the usual vertical position.

I could never bring myself to cut any of my covers to get them into smaller boxes...
I'm not that concerned with the Amaray covers, thats what steelbooks/digibooks are for.

Only about 10-15% of DVDs are in this video as the rest were upstairs where I moved them from. I've got some more shelves to build in the next few weeks as I have a lot of DVDs in crates in those rooms. I will be doing an updated video soon:

I agree with cevolution : just optimize your shelves and/or furnitures.
By arranging differently my DVDs + BRs, and trying to optimize both the shelves depth and the heights of each raw, I've been able to triple the capacity of the same space.
I went from single depth to double depth, and from 4 shelves in the furniture to 8 or 9. I've been able to add me something like 3 more years of space for my DVDs this way, and am now doing the same with my BDs.

And I'm separating DVDs from BDs + some collections that I like to have apart, so it's a bit tricky sometimes.

That would kill me to ditch the sleeves or stuff like this, so I'm working on space the furnitures instead.

Thats what I do more or less. Hiding the cases and using big wallets? No thanks - defeats the object to me. I want to see all of my films and then decide what to watch etc. I certainly dont want them hidden away.

Then again, Im fussy on what I buy so I havent got too many. For people who arent so fussy with the quality control, storage is a big problem .

Theres also the little fact that if you own hundreds or thousands of films, how on earth are you going to watch them all even once again!

To save space I took the paper sleeves from my DVDs, put them in plastic wallets in folders, put the discs in a big zip up disc holder, and chucked the amaray cases. Managex to save about 6 crates worth of space doing that.

When it comes to blu ray used to hate the thinner US style cases but as my collection is expanding I really appreciate how much less space they take up than their old DVD counterparts. Also multi-film sets, such as those for Steven Seagal or Sylvester Stallone, really help save space as well. And being ruthless, pruning the collection to only titles you love is a good idea, if you can bare to do it.

I'd try to avoid removing discs from their respective packages: as uninteresting as amaray cases can be, it's always nice to be able to see (and show) the whole collection at glance, not having to browse through one or more anonymous binders.

I did this way: one of these, combined with two of these additional shelves and this top element. The resulting bookcase can easily host up to 48 standard amaray DVD case per row, with a total of 9 rows. This means 432 amaray DVD cases in 80 cm width. BUT bluray amaray are shorter than dvd's, so is perfectly possible that the total number can raise up to around 600 when it comes to bluray, more so when talking about standard european or american slim cases, and not the "fat" english ones.

Did a big BR purge last week taking my collection from 121 to 89 (already back up to 96 lol). Mainly it was a matter of deciding what I bought because it was cheap & what I love rewatching. Yesterday I took it a step futher & spent most of the morning tossing out all digital copy only discs. Then making a stack of DVD copies (combo packs) to give the GF. Why do I need a DVD copy of a movie I have on BR? Charge me a few dollars less & keep your DVD! Anyway, the next step I took was to combine any & all related movies. Expendables & Expendables 2 together etc. I even went so far as to put Judge Dredd in with Dredd. Then any bulky box sets with nothing but paper thin boxes as their housing like The Bourne, Transformers, Spider-Man trilogies I put into triple cases with all artwork behind the first movie artwork. I actually cut the front & back of all the boxes to fit the amaray cases & it looks quite good. Now I have about 15 extra cases & alot more shelf space for new BR's

I will spend too long decided what goes with what.

I wouldn't put Dredd 3d with the Stallone film.

Do I put Wolverine with the three X-men movies or with First Class?

Should I lump a load of director's together, Coen, Tarantino etc? What about the two Kill Bills, some argued they should have been one film anyway, so maybe give them one case?

I dunno, all I know is my shelf space is full and the amaray boxes are piling up beside the sofa.

Funny thing is as much sense as it made to me to just house Dredd & Judge Dredd together (Judge Dredd artwork behind Dredd's. With Dredd slipcover over amaray) I can't bring myself to put Wolverine with any of the X-Men movies. Probably because First Class & Wolverine are both getting sequels I'll house them with eventually. I would however like a 6 disc holder to put the original trilogy & special feature's disc's in.

Would be nice if that were the case. But generally removing the DVD doesn't translate to a cheaper product, on the consumers side. Disney UK removed the DVDs from their blu-rays, and they were actually charging more on release than they had with recent Blu+DVD releases.

I had already posted a link to my first collection video, but as I have a new one, and I wanted to show off the other shelves I've put in, I've put a link in for the new video:

Anybody want to lead me in the direction of some nice looking brackets to hold shelving...just bought a house with a fiished basement and want to start building a built in looking shelving unit on one of the walls to start. I'm really trying to stay away from ugly L brackets if i can because I'm trying to conserve space, and don't want movies hitting up against them..if you know what I mean. Suggestions and ideas are greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!!!

If this is in the wrong thread please direct me to the right one then...sorry!

Ikea, Wickes, B&Q all have plenty of brackets. Flat steel L shapes are probably the most unobtrusive but hardly decorative. Consider Ikea's Algot system if it'll fit

With as many discs as I have, I pretty much use every trick I can.

First and foremost, I buy as many catalogue BDs as I can for movies I have on DVD. With constant upgrading, I can swap out those ugly thick DVDs for the thinner, sumbline BDs. It gradually frees up space.

As mentioned in the OP, I use multi-disc cases to hold multiple movies and multiple copies of movies in a single case. Recently, I consolidated the first five Halloween movies, Blu-Rays and DVDs, into a trio of thin five or six disc cases. All five Final Destination films, BDs and DVDs, now take up two cases. Both French Connection films are in one case. Gremlins 1 and 2 are in one case. Do this a bunch of times, you can clear up a good amount of space.

For most of my DVDs that I have left, I've moved them into thin cases (what are they, like, 3mm or something?). I've also moved my imported BDs into normal-sized cases (because UK BDs often come in pretty thick cases for some odd reason). I will trim off a sliver of the cover art to make the covers fit into the thinner cases (which may not be desirable, but I'm not overly attached to the covers). Thinner cases for scores of movies will free up some space too.

I've taken to using binders for many purposes. Just about all my TV shows, minierieses, and certain DVD copies of movies I have on BD have all been relocated to binders. If it wasn't for that, I'd probably need two more shelves.

And yeah, if all else fails, one can buy more shelves.

I've had to make some tough decisions on blu-rays. From now on I'm going to mostly avoid blind-buys (apart from Criterion and Eureka) so will only be buying stuff I'll watch time and time again.

I have quite a lot of these Case Logic cases, http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00005ATMF
Cases are in Ikea tubs in the loft (quite a lot of those as well).

I plan to rip the majority of them to my servers, so showing them becomes less of a concern.

I'd like to have kept everything in their cases, but it would have taken up far too much space. Hopefully when we move at some point this year I can find somewhere to display them (but I wouldn't bet on it )
