I honestly think that the movie is definitely not ageing well. At the time, its nice manners, cutesy and all could easily become too much at a time, since the movie also hasn't a lot to give and tell.

15 years later, there's not much of it left. Except the infamous Jeunet piss-yellow filter.

I would probably place it higher than those .... they're good, although Delicacy was a bit disappointing. It's an alright film, just nothing very special.

Priceless was actually the first blu-ray I ever bought.

I'm a huge fan of Dirty Little Things. Another great movie about the immigrant experience. It's not exactly what you'll expect ut to be. Totally worth the $6.00.

Yeahhh, it's a breezy romantic comedy..but please don't let that stop you...it's really genuinely charming and very enjoyable.
Bookmarked.

I got sick of waiting and not knowing what was happening with the Tati films in North America, so I bought the BFI editions from the UK.
We watched Les vacances de M. Hulot the other night. Fantastic. There's actually two versions of the film on the discs, so I'll go back and watch the theatrical version soon.

Yup. Case in point: I did not respond too favorably to Cosmopolis when I saw it in theaters, but I picked up the relatively cheap blu to re-watch (plus for its commentary and extensive making-of), and its now one one of my top films of 2012.

I'd say that The Man Who Knew Too Much is the best-looking transfer of Criterion's Hitch bunch. When factoring for its shoddy history on home video it's one of the most impressive black & white transfers I've ever seen.

As for the film itself, I go with most people in ranking it below The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes, but that's only being semantic: if you like one of them chances are heavily weighted that you'll like them all, and they each offer something different. For example, this has the famed villain turn from Peter Lorre.

[The Lady Vanishes is my favorite of the British-period Hitch, though].

Maybe for Cronenberg, once the shock factor has dissipated, the ideas remain.

As for Hitchcock, yes I like Lady Vanishes best of his Pre-Rebecca films.

And Yes, Lorre is what really peaks my interest.

Everyone, the writer of the Monsieur Verdoux essay has written an excellent piece on digital cinematography and how out of step film critics and even filmmakers are in adjusting.

I must say, after looking into the Three Colors Trilogy even more, I think I need to add it to my wish list. Not my typical types of films but they look beautiful.

C'mon, time for a sale!

Thanks for the help ... you're awesome! I compiled a list of all the suggestions below, in trying to cut down on responding to every individual's post. I edited the list down to only Criterion blurays (leaving out any suggested DVDs

or other company's blurays). I'll also take into consideration the possible concerns mentioned.

Charade
A Night to Remember
Stagecoach
The Four Feathers
The Alfred Htichcock films are pretty safe in this regard
The Chaplin films
Topsy-Turvy (one of my favorites in the collection)
Robinson Crusoe on Mars
Paths of Glory (war violence, 1950s style in black and white)
The Red Shoes (great film)
For All Mankind
Twelve Angry Men
Island of Lost Souls
Phantom Carriage (silent film)
David Lean/Noel Coward Box Set
Sweet Smell of Success (been a while since I've seen it, but I don't recall anything in it to offend sensibilities)

octagon
Design for Living (very witty and adult in the grown-up sense - it's really no more risque than any of the the more mainstream hayes code screwball romcoms - it just explicitly acknowleges that men and women have sex instead of relying on obvious hints and allusions)
People on Sunday (silent)
Any of the Lean/Coward (Brief Encounter is outstanding)

Abdrewes
12 Angry Men
Beauty & the Beast
Black Narcissus
Black Orpheus
Days of Heaven
Design for Living
For All Mankind
The Four Feathers
The Gold Rush
The Great Dictator
Lonesome
Modern Times
People on Sunday
The Red Shoes
Umberto D. (might be a bit heartwrenching, in a good way)

Blu-Velvet
The Mikado
The Killing
A Night To Remember

I do recall, however, that TOPSY-TURVY does have a bit of raunchiness and brief nudity, although my 87-year-old mother still likes it, as she loves Gilbert and Sullivan. You may want to go with THE MIKADO instead, if your audience is especially sensitive to nudity. And while DESIGN FOR LIVING is great, it has obvious implications that might still offend the easily offendable. A few might also find ISLAND OF THE LOST SOULS somewhat disturbing unless they're into horror films. There's always THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME, but Criterion only has a DVD on that and the current Blu-ray is from Flicker Alley. Kubrick's THE KILLING is a good suspense thriller with nothing really objectionable, and there's also A NIGHT TO REMEMBER.

Big Statement considering he helmed Amelie & Delicatessen. I do Love The lively kinetic worlds he lays out for US.

Glad we could help! Don't forget that Criterion's STAGECOACH Blu-ray includes the delightful John Ford silent western-comedy-romance BUCKING BROADWAY, and THE LADY VANISHES includes the amusing spy comedy CROOK'S TOUR starring the Charters & Caldicott characters. I'd probably start off with something like CHARADE and THE FOUR FEATHERS, then one or more of the David Lean set, LADY VANISHES, 39 STEPS, and maybe STAGECOACH if you have more men than women in your audience or THE RED SHOES, THE MIKADO, and BLACK NARCISSUS if you have more women than men. Good luck!
