I think this is a truly great idea, honestly, and I haven't even seen the movie. For everyone who thinks it's a dumb idea, that's fine. Don't buy it. For a fan of both the movie and the format VHS (and there are a ton of VHS collectors out there) this is great news.
As far as I am concerned, anything is potentially a collector's item, as long as it's wanted and sought after by the people who well, collect it. Which format it's on is entirely irrelevant. |

V/H/S was easily my favorite horror film of 2012, and, in fact, it's the best horror movie in recent memory. I saw it at an indie movie here in Atlanta, and was unsettled by the unapologetically ugly horror style of the film to the point that I swore I'd never watch it again.
...but I pick up the Blu-ray every time I see it in a store and I am always on the fence for a few seconds. It's ugly brutal grindhouse material, but that's exactly why it works. I would not spend money on the actual videocassette of this movie, but I think that it is a fun swag item for enthusiastic fans of the film. Serious question for the fellow V/H/S peeps... Why, in the movie, did iPhone, digital camera, and Skype footage appear on VHS tapes? Is there any real-world logic to this scenario (ability to destroy evidence films in the case of a police raid, etc.?). Or were all these movies on V/H/S tapes simply because it would fit the movie theme? Last edited by The Great Owl; 02-05-2013 at 10:08 AM. |

There are quite a lot of VHS collector's out there. And most of them collect genre movies - especially horror. Some tapes can go quite high because they have never been released on any other format, maybe they are the first commercially available version of a popular title or simply because the VHS version is longer than any version released later. In the latter case, local VHS releases were often made straight from 35mm release prints. And some of those copies of release prints might today be longer than what has survived on film elsewhere (even in the vaults of the producers). E.g. the Danish VHS of Fulci's 'City of the Living Dead' contains a coda that does not exists in any other surviving version. So that particular tape is of course quite sought after and expensive to get.
I know people who scavenge thrift shops and markets weekends after weekends to find that one elusive tape of a favorite movie. This release of V/H/S is aimed straight at those guys, the people who still love and collect the old format - not at the members of blu-ray.com. Last edited by Mr. Thomsen; 02-05-2013 at 09:11 PM. |

A cool item for VHS collectors and/or big fans of the movie. To the peeps that don't get this--you do realize that people collect all kinds of things (like coins, stamps, toys, vinyl, slipcovers

It's a novelty item, a marketing tactic, something intentionally and artificially manufactured to conjure up some sort of "that's so coool!" vibe. Why anyone would fall for such tactics is beyond me. It's not cool, it's just a cash grab designed to milk the title of the movie, and the BS hipster/poseur revival of VHS tapes. The fact that they're charging $30 for this makes it even worse. If this was actually something special then I could understand. Perhaps include it as part of a collector's edition, or number it or something that actually shows that they put effort into it and care about their target demographic. If people are happy to open their wallets for it then by all means, I just personally think it's a sad attempt at trying to milk a horror fan.

For people saying that this is a waste of money and time... it will increase in value over time.

I don't know why or how the price jumped so quickly! When I ordered it, it was only $18.89... Not that that's too much cheaper, but still.
I know a bunch of people think it's stupid. I understand. I personally liked the movie and think having the VHS is pretty cool. I do wish they had offered it like they did "The House of the Devil", which was the DVD and VHS together for $30. Not sure how much the Blu-ray combo was. I didn't have a Blu-ray player then. Lol. |

I already said, if people want to spend their money on it feel free. I'm not trying to stop anyone from doing that, I'm merely voicing my personal opinion on it. I'm pretty sure I'm allowed to voice it, even if it's not a glowing reaction. Technically this shouldn't even be in this section anyway..

Not sure how much they originally sold for but House of the Devil VHS tapes go for about $50-$60 on ebay, which isn't too bad
