I agree. It defeats the object of collecting them.

Nah, it's a Zavvi exclusive. That's what exclusive means there.

Also, should some bored intern from Paramount be reading this, I would love a Star Trek Into Darkness steelbook later in the year to go with this which I presume is a ghiven. But please - pretty please - could you include the 3D version? Thank you.

For you maybe. I personally buy them because I like the way they look compared to regular cases. I don't really care about the worth at all, and think that scalpers on eBay etc are really distasteful in what they're doing.

In the case of Star Trek, I already have the two disc edition, and since this will probably be single disc, I think I'm gonna pass, unless it looks absolutely amazing.

That depends on what you class as 'collecting' do you only collect rare and expensive steelbooks? if you own something that demands a high price on the secondary market and another version is released does that devalue your collection? you still own the original, nothing can ever change that, a true 'collector' will always want the original version whereas a casual collector such as myself is happy with collecting what I can afford, if thats a re release so be it, I missed out on Star Trek on its release as it was before I moved over to Bluray, and there is no way I would pay the prices it goes for. This version of Star Trek looks to be a stripped down 'budget' version, 1 disk not 3, maybe not the same paint finish... will it have inside artwork? who knows, so it IS different, it might be the same artwork but its different its not as thought its a like for like reprint.

if something I buy turns out to be a desirable item worth a few quid, so be it, but I dont collect with a view of owning a collection worth thousands of pounds because lets face it one day in the not too distant future, all but a handful of steelbooks will be worthless, if something like the raid, Iron man or the Terminator were to be re released it would be annoying but hardly the end of the world, folks spitting out their dummies ever time a title gets reprinted is just silly, as the re released versions for the most part are different to the originals (inferior finishes, missing disks, printed info, no inside artwork etc) has there ever been a re released steelbook that was indistinguishable from the original? I cant think of one off hand

The problem is that there are movies like Blues Brothers, Star Wars, Spaghetti Westerns.. I could go on and on, that don't have a steelbook. Yet they rob the collectors of an exclusive from 3 years ago. Is a bit pants really.

I thought we over this period of re-re-re releasing steelbooks. This already had a play.com/Futureshop edition.

Yes, they are.
Besides, why pay for half (1 disc), when you can get the full package (2 disc) for about the same price?

Seems illogical to me.

I hope that Blu-ray banner won't stay there like the play.com release. Maybe some embossing/debossing would be nice. Any chance there's an error in the listing and it will be a 3 disc set? Was going to get the 3 disc version with slip anyway so don't think this steel will be worth it.

Couldn't agree more, I only buy them because they look good and like having a fancy dan version of movies I like. I'm glad I don't have to spend £70 to get it finally, so I'm happy.

This is why paying over the odds for 'rare' releases is a joke.

If you're a collector, it shouldn't matter since you still have your original version in your collection. All re-releases like this do is reduce some perceived value, which doesn't really matter since you're a collector, so you're not selling it anyway, right? I can see why if you paid a lot for a copy, you'd feel stung - but there's nothing to stop something like this happening to any release. It's all part of the game.

Just like anything in life you want to feel that any decision you make is the right one. An increased "perceived" value in anything you have makes you feel good about the purchase. I am a collector and have no real urge to sell my steelbooks no matter how much they are "perceived" to be valued. However, it does make me feel good.

But thats just half the story. The other half of the story is that Team America isn't announced, or that a gazillion other steelbooks aren't being made. Then they release something that has already been released.

Alot of you that are pre-ordering this version of Star Trek from Zavvi will appreciate its worth down the road.

I must admit, I feel better that I have all the Disney ones, since they will never be re-released ever again due to the vaulting system. So at least I can feel priveleged that I have those and they will never be reproduced.

At times like this, I'm in half a mind about the steelbook releases:

On the one hand, since I don't have this, I'm very happy with it being re-released (rather unexpectedly, I must say) and that I don't have to pay ridiculous amounts for what is a great film. I already own the special edition blu-ray but this will be a wonderful addition to the steelbooks.

On the other, the Play.com version has been out of print and rare for a while now, and people who have paid over-the-odds for something just because they know they might never own it if they don't will feel annoyed. I would, if I was in their position. But, as other members have said, it comes down to what you will reasonably pay for something personally - if you're happy to fork out £60+ for a bit of special packaging, then good luck to you, but you must expect it to either drop in price or be re-released at any point. Plus, it's all about the sentimental value, after all.

Anyway, pre-ordered.

Zavvi are operating a business for profit. If they decide that re releases can make them more profit then good for them.
I only buy movies that I like and steelbook editions wherever possible, and if there are different steelbooks from around the world, then I will buy the better one.
Steelbook collecting is the strangest of habits in some ways,I can't think of any other hobby where a damaged case is more important than a damaged item inside the case ;-)
Hoping for more re releases from Zavvi.

According to Zavvi, you are saving £10.00 by buying this at the exclusive price of £14.99. Strange marketing ploy, this. The only fault is the shipping and the non-existent customer service.
