I'll be preordering both titles myself. The Fury isn't a great film but it has its moments. The John Williams score is really good though. I still have a copy of the 2 disc cd OOP score. Curious if it will get a new cd re-issue.

I would have thought the De Palma love would rival the love for Carpenter. I can't wait to get it.

Although Christine was pretty much critically reviled and a big bomb outside the US in its day - when I was working in a UK cinema the audience never reached double figures in the evenings and it was the only film we ever played that nobody at all showed up for several of the afternoon shows - it has Carpenter and King going for it from a sales perspective and has seen its reputation grow a bit over the years. The Fury, even though it was intended as a big mainstream blockbuster, is pretty much forgotten by most people and much more of a cult niche title. It's a very mixed bag, with Kirk overacting his little heart out and taking his shirt off at every opportunity but on the plus side there's that magnificent John Williams score, some great setpieces and, the clincher for me, John Cassavettes exploding several times in slow motion. I always preferred it to Carrie, but I'm under no delusions there are many people with the same opinion, so it's one that could go either way in terms of a fast sell out.

Speaking as an old fart who was already an adult when he saw both movies theatrically, then once apiece on DVD, my interest in them is very asymetrical; I'm looking forward to seeing Christine again primarily for the fun of rediscovering something I haven't seen in at least a decade, which also happens to tickle the vintage car buff in me. Plus, although not yet confirmed (at least that I'm aware of), I suspect there's a better than 50% chance that this will be another Sony 4k job, like Fright Night. As for De Palma's The Fury, that one has always been a more uneven experience for me...even my previous viewing on DVD was primarily for its Williams score plus a few of the better staged set pieces. I still regard it as a mostly good movie, albeit with a bit too much sidebar star-pampering filler (like [Show spoiler] ) - that kind of cutesy Hollywood schtick belonged in some other movie. One way or the other, it will be interesting to see how it all plays out on Friday. BTW, has anyone heard more about the possibility of a Keith Gordon signing for Christine? Both of this weeks pre-orders are among the more exciting for me. I am a fan of early De Palma, but I am a huge John Carpenter fan so Christine was always the more exciting title.
I was a young child when it came out, but I first saw it sometime around the late eighties and have really liked it ever since. Not in my top tier of Carpenter, but still one I like a whole lot. |

Sorry but Christine was not reviled or bombed and none of the fans I know from all over the World have said otherwise.
I like Thunderheart but I wouldn't pay more than $16 to maybe $20 the most. The only reason why I am getting Christine because it is my all time favorite book/movie & car plus I'm not waiting 3 more years. |

It was when it opened, regardless of its reputation today: it did okay in the US but next to nothing internationally and at the time was regarded as Carpenter's worst film. Which probably helped seal its cult status, especially since Carpenter would go on to make some much more unpopular films in the 90s.
