I disagree. Renters enjoy movies. Collectors love them

And do people with bigger collections love movies more than people with smaller collections?

How far does does this absurd line of so-called reasoning go?

Collectors tend to watch movies more than once. Renters do not. If you rent then buy that is different. Just common sense. Not absurd at all. What are you going to do if you want to watch a rental more than once. The cost will be equivalent to just buying in first place. I stand by what I said.

so someone who owns 500 movies, even if 75% of them are crap, loves movies more than someone who owns 200 really good movies? i rented movies for years because i couldn't afford to buy them. doesn't mean i don't love movies.

Yes, someone with 400-500 blurays is obviously a bigger fan than someone with 40-50 discs. If circumstances come into it of course that is a big reason. However, if two people with similar incomes who can afford new movies every week or month have a vastly different number of discs then yes, I would say the guy with the bigger collection loves movies more.

Many on these forums have not really committed to bluray and they are the most vocal streaming fanboys in general.

The guy with the bigger collection presumeably loves collecting movies more. That is the only generalisation you can make.

I mentioned circumstances as being an issue. That is fair enough. However, all things equal the bigger collector is the more passionate about movies. Same with anything in life.

Soccer, biggest fans spend most money following their team home and away.
Music, some have vinyl and cd's in their thousands.
Games, PCM owners who spend thousands on the latest upgrades, graphics cards etc..

Just a few random examples.

Someone who spends 700 pounds a year on discs
Someone who spends 100 pounds a year on discs

Both have similar incomes, all things equal, who would you say is the biggest movie fan?

Maybe one of them is more obsessive compulsive? you don't need to own something to be passionate about it

Or they love a wider range of movies. Taste are subjective, remember.

What if the person who has 40-50 discs used all the saved money from not buying 500 discs to rent the movies on iTunes instead?

How would I know?

Does the guy who spends 700 pounds a year watch all of those discs multiple times or are most of them one-and-done (if they get watched at all)?

Do either or both of them pore over the supplements?

How many times a year do they each go theaters?

How frequently do each of them watch movies on cable/sat?

Do either of them read books/articles about film?

I'm sorry but I just can't look at a two piles of discs and from that alone determine who loves movies more.

And why would I even want to?

Then that person is not a serious collector and cannot re-watch those movies

I don't think any of this holds true. How big a fan you are of something has nothing to do with how much money you spend on it.

I have a friend who own 3 times the amount of movies that I do, because he doesn't rent, he just blind buys and has a large disposable income. In fact, probably 1/8 of his movies are still in the shrinkwrap since he never got around to watching them.

I have a much smaller movie collection, but I would have to say I am much more of a movie fan than he is. I constantly re-watch movies from my collection, and would probably own more if I could afford it. I spent months going to stores testing and sampling home theater equipment, so that I could find the best setup that I could afford.
He has a larger home theater setup (7.1 vs my 5.1), but his is one that he walked into a store and just bought.

Another example --- I am a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers NFL team --- I can't afford season tickets and can't afford to go to away games, but I can tell you more about them than my boss who has season tickets. I go to the games I can, and the rest I watch on TV, in fact, the night my daughter was born, I watched a game on TV with her sleeping in my arms. I can tell you the name of every player on the team and every player on the practice squad and a description of them. So, am I less of a fan than the person that goes to every game, but has no idea who the emergency QB is for the team or who the long snapper is?

You have no way of knowing by this example --- because you spend more, doesn't make you a bigger fan --- maybe the guy that spends 700 pounds a year watches movies once and then never watches them again, or maybe he spends that much because he is a bad consumer and buys movies at a very marked-up price, or maybe some of the movies he buys he buys as gifts for others, or maybe the guy who spends 100 pounds a year spends less because he already had a large collection and the guy who spends more does so because he is just starting out????

But the guy who doesn't collect likely watches way more movies via rental than the guy who collects.

It is just my opinion, don't turn it into a lynch mob .
