Finally, after years of speculation Bungie and Activision have revealed the first bits and pieces of what exactly Destiny (yes, that's the official name) is all about. It's a first-person shooter. It's an open-world sandbox. And it's a persistent world. It's all that and more -- something Bungie is calling a "shared-world shooter."

The premise

Destiny takes place in a distant future after a golden age for humanity where it has populated the solar system and beyond. Your story takes place after the events of a horrible conflict where humanity was attacked by an unknown force and was brought to near extinction. Some humans survived, however, thanks to the Traveler, a big floating round entity that sacrificed itself and hangs above Earth where it made its last stand.

People came together to rebuild a new city under the Traveler's protection, and soon humans once again ventured back into space to reclaim what was once theirs. Humans quickly discover a variety of alien creatures have taken up residence in their former territories, and the aliens are determined to be rid of humans once and for all.

You are the last hope of humanity

Players will take on the role of a Guardian, a special soldier that is able to wield some of the radical powers of the Traveler. It's up to the Guardians to reclaim what was once humanity's and ensure the survival of everyone.

Guardians are special in that each one will always be unique to the player. This isn't a case where you're playing as the one specific hero à la Halo's Master Chief. Everyone is playing as a unique hero that can be completely customized from clothing, armor, cloaks, and weaponry. Players will be able to select from multiple classes, and for now, Bungie only revealed the Hunter, Warlock, and Titan classes. What makes each class special wasn't specifically discussed yet other than the Warlock's magic-like elements.

From what I remember Xbox gets the game first so I doubt their related to PS4 announcement

I think Destiny is a 720 exclusive, while future title will be on the ps4... Least that is the rumor these days.

If true, then it is a great way for Microsoft to steal some of Sony's spotlight next week.

I posted here because I thought the first title would be on Sony's as well.

From the legal document we saw that Destiny will be on both consoles, but it will have a large window of exclusivity for the Xbox. There are 3 games in the franchise spaced two years apart with major expansions as DLC every year.

At least that's what I remember.

Hey xXI GaMe IXx you got me. I'm gonna be checking this out, 5.30pm GMT 2 hours to go

I did here about the xbox timed exclusive deal (it's not the first time they've thrown their wallet at Activision is it? )

But I think I can look past that BS get in to this game.

Interested to see a Bungie game on PS4 after exclusivity expires on the next MS cosole. Bit skeptical though of the game based on those pictures. The 2nd pic looks interesting with the ship, but i'm just wondering how it will work out with it looking a bit Mass Effect mixed with Halo. Or effectively a Halo-esque game.

So, gonna want to see new details and some video before i make a full decision. Still, i think this will be MS announcing their next gen console through the game. Beating Sony to the punch of announcing there console, even if it meant a lot less fanfare

I'm seeing rumors that its for this gen. Which I think is a huge mistake.

They aren't in bed with MS no more s don't worry

They are with Activision though, so maybe worry a little

Consoles have been crying out for a MMO type game where you can go from land to air to space an between planets.

It's been tried to varying succses since PS2 days but nothings got it perfect.

I don't think it's possible on current gen to have a game that huge in scale that would look as stunning as it's gameplay should be.

I really do hope that this is a next gen game, and if it's cross gen then there should be no reason at all to buy it on current gen, only reason to release it there would be to rake in some money from the bigger user base.

That could be the games only problem in that for an MMO the user base would be tiny online in compasrison to current gen or PC.

If they could get it to work online between current gen and next gen that would be amazing. Much like Dust on PS3 plays nice with PC servers and Vita games like wipeout play with PS3 users online.

I remember when they first went to Activision people were complaining and some one from Bungie said that in their contract with Activision Bungie has free control. The only thing they are obligated to do is meet the dates set by Activision.

Yes Next Gen as well as current, and they wouldn't answer if PS3 players will be able to play with PS4 players but it's likely that you will.
