Default UPA-1 just killed my tweeter on my LSi15 :(

well my venture into power amps is short lived. Got my UPA-1s last night and they worked great last night, turned them on today and there was horrible feedback on one of my speakers (regardless of the volume knob) and it ended up frying one of the tweeters on my LSi15's and the amp now sounds like burning electronics

Do you guys know if polk will just ship me a tweeter as I don't want to ship that speaker lol.

So I posted this on the polk forums and emotiva as well, and not surprisingly enough the consensus on each forum is to blame the other one.

What do you guys think is the likely cause knowing that

1. There is no way I turned it up too loud (even if you don't believe me assume this is the case, because it is)
2. amp smells like burning electronics really bad

my money is on the amp

If the system was wired properly, it was likely the amp. Check your connections for a short somewhere.

yeah after I unplugged power from everything I went down every wire and it was fine, I put my mains back on the onkyo and everything is working again less the tweeter.

I am going to swap the tweeters to see if its the tweeter or the crossover and then go from there.

After looking at your posts in the Emotiva thread, I saw that you bought the UPA-1s used locally. How sure are you that the UPA-1s were working properly? I hate to say it, but the person that sold them to you may have been having problems with them and decided to sell them. Hopefully, that is not the case but it does seem suspicious that one of them fried out shortly after you bought them.

Glad to hear that they are still under warranty! Have you contacted them about your crossover & tweeter to see if they cover that as well? I figured if the amp cause damage to your speaker, that they might take care of the damage to your speaker.

I will inquire, as long as one of them fixes it I don't care who lol.

Both companies are not available for support over the weekend so ill have to wait till Monday (or maybe Tuesday due to the holiday)

sorry to hear about it, but, the bottom line for you is that both items are under warranty and should be repaired by the respective companies.

while the emotiva repair should cost you nothing (they will cover the shipping if it's defective under warranty) but, you will have to shell out for polk. of course, if your luck, they may just send you the crossover & tweeter.

of course, given the brand of the speaker and their cost, they may want you to mail the entire speaker back to them. most likely at your own cost.

keep us posted.

How come every one is so quick to blame the amp. Maybe the crossover was bad, fried the tweeter and hurt the amp.

I don't think that notion is to unbelievable. The LSi15 is 4 ohm speaker, maybe bad components couldn't protect the tweeter and caused the ohms to drop below what the UPA could deal with.

What ever the cause may have been its a crappy situation, I feel for you BLindsay. Hopefully between Emotiva and Polk your situation can be resolved in a timely fashion.

Well, the UPA-1s haven't been available new for a good while now, so they would have had to have been used. So it wasn't exactly missing information.

I like delicious waffles.

Good luck with the fix!
