If exploring what it means to be human is a pointless endeavor then yes, this film and the novel from which it was adapted were pointless.

And dystopian science fiction does tend to be a bit dark (that's kind of what the 'dys' is all about) so yeah, depressing is pretty fair.

Piece of crap? Hardly. It was very well written, very well acted and very, very deftly directed and if you didn't see parallels to ethical questions we face in the here and now you just weren't looking.
