Surely if this is true then it's going to seriously piss off a ton of Star Wars fans? I mean, if i had been reading the novels for the last 20 years and found out Lucasfilm was wiping the slate clean i'd be seriously hacked off!
Well, that's why I never read any of the EU stuff. I just considered it officially-licensed fan fiction. Also, Star Wars fans were able to roll with the Prequels, which wiped out chunks of EU stuff like Boba Fett's origins and whatnot, so I figure they'll be able to roll with the sequels ignoring the post-Jedi EU books.

You find me a quote directly from Disney and not from a source close to the situation and I'll be happy because that's all I could find. As I said though even if they do decide to go another direction I will still enjoy the new films and will continue to enjoy the alternate timeline established in the EU.

I love how you know so much about the EU even though you have never read it.

Michael Arndt and LucasFilm sat down months before the official merger was announced, and he created a three-film treatment. Disney and Lucasfilm liked it, and hired him to write the first film. It isn't an adaptation of the Thrawn novels, it is a new three-film story created by Arndt. I thought this was common knowledge by now, even that casting notice you guys put up a couple of days ago states the film isn't based on Extended Universe characters or concepts.

I didn't say anything about the Thrawn novels other than a quick reply to another member. I simply mentioned that with the original actors ages they could easily pull off a story line with the Solo children.

I see where you're coming from, but I'd be very surprised if they don't use: a name, a place, or event from the EU. One thing you also have to factor in, is that Lucas isn't calling the shots anymore. I think Disney has seen a histroy of fan venom, and after the $4 Billion investment they don't want anything close to that. History can always be a great guide, if used properly.
So with that said, I have not seen any of the major players(Kennedy, Abrams, Arndt, etc) state, specifically they WON'T be touching the EU in ANY fashion. Not that I disbelieve you, I know you're good people and a true fan, but that I have not heard what you're saying in that regard.

Let's face it, 90% of what we post in this thread is speculation...especially this far out. I'm sure that will change as we get closer. So we'll just see how this whole thing shakes out. If Hamill doesn't sign on I think it would be a severe blow, in terms of continuity, but the franchise can survive it...I hope.

Bottom line: It's just damn fun to be talking new Star Wars stuff!!!

This...

There probably end up being 1 new star wars film a year if Disney have their way, aternating between main entry films and the spin offs.

One can only hope. Right now 5 new films are getting the green light(3 more episodes & 2 stand alone), so perhaps Star Wars will try to match Bond.

I know, as a fan of both franchises, I'm all for them churning out films!

I've been talking with you lot for years, ever since the prequels were just a rumour.

I didn't mean to imply they wouldn't use even a tiny piece of it, like a name or a place -- it's an original treatment for all three films by Michael Arndt, and based on his treatment, he got the job to write the first screenplay. Meanwhile, Kasdan and Kinberg are developing the spin off films, and may work on Episode VIII and IX. It sounds to me like they're doing the Avengers model, only in reverse.

So like I was trying to imply due to the original actors ages an original adaptation of the story of the Solo twins is a possibility. I love speculation.

The main episodes will be original stories, this is fact. But just like the prequels, some elements non essential to the plot may be used, names, location, etc (i.e. Coruscant was taken from EU).

From the press release during the acquisition, it was mentioned that the deal includes story treatments by George Lucas for the main saga. Article on the StarWars.com website reported that the treatments outline the saga up to Episode XII. Michael Arndt was only announced to write the screenplay, reports about him doing treatments never came from official sources.

From what I understand, once the main saga completed (with standalones in between) the standalone spin-offs will continue on as a franchise just like James Bond.

Arndt was brought on board by Lucasfilm months ago to put together ideas to take the franchise forward, a source with knowledge of the situation says. This was before the October 30 $4 billion sale of George Lucas’ company to Disney was finalized, The result was the “pretty extensive and detailed treatment for what would be the next three movies, the trilogy,” that Disney CEO Bob Iger referred to when the company’s acquisition of Lucasfilm was announced. Iger also announced plans for the new series of Star Wars films that day. “We’ve got a lengthy treatment that comes with this that we feel really good about and the film is in what I’ll call early-stage development right now,” the Disney boss said.

It isn't Lucas' treatment, in the sense of that famed 9-film saga he once envisioned and then abandoned. It's Arndt's and LucasFilm's, and I'm sure Mr. Lucas gave input.

Ok, I thought you mentioned the EU would be wiped out entirely.
Which I would find hard to believe, as some stories might be used as the source material for the stand alone films. Heck I don't care if it's not part of the episodes. To me, a Star Wars film is a Star Wars film. Of course, until now, I've never had to "divide" my interests as it's always been one saga.

Like I always say: Having options can only be viewed as a good thing!
