If other major conferences follow suit (specifically the Big 12 because UNI plays Iowa State about every other year) then UNI might have to look into moving up to FBS and seeing if they can get into the MAC, dropping sports or even worse becoming a non-scholarship football program.
It sounds like a pointless rule. All these schools will do is schedule terrible Sun Belt Conference schools to replace the I-AA opponents. It'll still be creme puff opponents.

I've pondered that as well. I think someone is far less likely to lower the boom when their own melon is at risk.

Someone will have to check me on this, but didn't the NCAA allow for the expansion of the season to 12 games (previously 11 unless you played Hawaii) so that teams would play FBS teams?

Rugby players are nuts (I know a few) and I'm sure they have concussion issues as well, but if someone were to compare head-to-head hit counts between the two sports, I would be interested to see how they compare.

Apparently Alex Collins wasn't the only recruit who had trouble getting his mom to sign his letter of intent. Matthew Thomas, a linebacker who ESPN ranked as the 6th best recruit in the country, said he wanted to go to USC but his mother refused to sign his letter of intent with them so he ended up signing with Florida State.

Agreed. In looking up the Big Ten schedules, I saw a sprinkling of UMass. They're FBS, sure, but c'mon.

Thank You mom. I read the article, he didn't sound to bitter or mad about his choice. It sounded like mom just pointed him in the right direction.

It looks like Mario Cristobal is leaving Miami after about a month on their staff and taking a job as Alabama's offensive line coach. From Jeremy Fowler of CBS Sports:

Quote:
#Alabama is hiring Mario Cristobal as O-line coach, per source. He's in Tuscaloosa today to finalize deal.
I'm a little surprised Cristobal would leave so quick. For one this doesn't seem like much of a promotion, at Miami he was the associate head coach and tight ends coach. Cristobal is a Miami alum and outside of a couple years as a Rutgers assistant has lived in the Miami area his entire life. I would have thought it would take a much better job to get him to leave his alma mater so quickly. Cristobal must think the Alabama job will help him get a head coaching job faster.

Cristobal is right. Alabama is as good a launching pad for getting a decent head coaching job as anywhere. Alabama's O-Line is always incredible so it's not like it'll be a tough job.

It's all good. Our time will come again soon. And it will be nice to see Alabama fade back into oblivion once again.

It's so much fun seeing the NCAA exposed for the fraud it is with their botched Miami and USC "investigations."

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/st...-investigation

Quote:
NCAA admits missteps in Miami case

The NCAA named Jonathan Duncan as interim vice president of enforcement on Monday in the wake of admitted "missteps" and "insufficient oversight" in its investigation of Miami's athletics department.

Duncan will replace Julie Roe Lach, whose firing was reported earlier by Yahoo! Sports.

"Obviously, this is an outcome that nobody wants to see on their watch or anyone else's," NCAA president Mark Emmert said. "This is something that's an embarrassment to the association and our staff."

Despite an earlier report that a source told ESPN's Brett McMurphy that managing director of enforcement Tom Hosty was also fired, Emmert told USA Today that Hosty will remain with the organization.

On Monday, the NCAA released the results of an external probe of how it investigated the Hurricanes, nearly a month after revealing what it called "a very severe issue of improper conduct." That issue was that the attorney for former booster and convicted Ponzi scheme architect Nevin Shapiro was used to improperly obtain information.

Despite admitting that missteps were made, the NCAA said the case against Miami will proceed "with information properly obtained by the enforcement staff."

Firing back for the first time at the long investigation, Miami president Donna Shalala released a statement Monday night saying the Hurricanes "have been wronged" by what she called a flawed probe.

Shalala says Miami wants a swift resolution -- with no additional penalties other than the ones the Hurricanes have already self-imposed, such as two missed bowl games, a missed Atlantic Coast Conference football championship game and scholarship reductions.

"The lengthy and already flawed investigation has demonstrated a disappointing pattern of unprofessional and unethical behavior," Shalala said in the statement. "By the NCAA leadership's own admission, the University of Miami has suffered from inappropriate practices by NCAA staff. There have also been damaging leaks to the media of unproven charges. Regardless of where blame lies internally with the NCAA, even one individual, one act, one instance of malfeasance both taints the entire process and breaches the public's trust."

We delivered a very strong response to the NCAA's notice of allegations:

Quote:
"The University of Miami deeply regrets and takes full responsibility for those NCAA violations that are based on fact and are corroborated by multiple individuals and/or documentation. We have already self-imposed a bowl ban for an unprecedented two-year period, forfeited the opportunity to participate in an ACC championship game, and withheld student-athletes from competition.

Over the two and a half years since the University of Miami first contacted the NCAA enforcement staff about allegations of rules violations, the NCAA interviewed dozens of witnesses, including current and former Miami employees and student-athletes, and received thousands of requested documents and emails from the University. Yet despite our efforts to aid the investigation, the NCAA acknowledged on February 18, 2013 that it violated its own policies and procedures in an attempt to validate the allegations made by a convicted felon. Many of the allegations included in the Notice of Allegations remain unsubstantiated.

Now that the Notice of Allegations has been issued, let me provide some context to the investigation itself:

Many of the charges brought forth are based on the word of a man who made a fortune by lying. The NCAA enforcement staff acknowledged to the University that if Nevin Shapiro, a convicted con man, said something more than once, it considered the allegation "corroborated" - an argument which is both ludicrous and counter to legal practice.
Most of the sensationalized media accounts of Shapiro's claims are found nowhere in the Notice of Allegations. Despite their efforts over two and a half years, the NCAA enforcement staff could not find evidence of prostitution, expensive cars for players, expensive dinners paid for by boosters, player bounty payments, rampant alcohol and drug use, or the alleged hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and gifts given to student-athletes, as reported in the media. The fabricated story played well - the facts did not.
The NCAA enforcement staff failed, even after repeated requests, to interview many essential witnesses of great integrity who could have provided first-hand testimony, including, unbelievably, Paul Dee, who has since passed away, but who served as Miami Athletic Director during many of the years that violations were alleged to have occurred. How could a supposedly thorough and fair investigation not even include the Director of Athletics?
Finally, we believe the NCAA was responsible for damaging leaks of unsubstantiated allegations over the course of the investigation. Let me be clear again: for any rule violation - substantiated and proven with facts - that the University, its employees, or student-athletes committed, we have been and should be held accountable. We have worked hard to improve our compliance oversight, and we have already self-imposed harsh sanctions. We deeply regret any violations, but we have suffered enough.

The University and counsel will work diligently to prepare our official response to the Notice of Allegations and submit it to the Committee on Infractions within the required 90-day time period.

We trust that the Committee on Infractions will provide the fairness and integrity missing during the investigative process."

if not, it should. i am obviously not a "U" fan, but i think that any school/university that takes the initiative should be given credit for their own actions against those that do harm to the school/university.

i actually applaud UM for being proactive and self-imposing a bowl ban and holding themselves out of contention for a conference championship appearance as well as holding out those student-athletes who were involved (if i read that correctly).

I think Miami should impose no sanctions on themselves, give the NCAA the middle finger and pursue legal action against them. The NCAA is a rotten stinking corpse with no moral authority or credibility. They already admitted to badly botching the Miami and USC cases. The sooner the NCAA collapses the better college sports will be.
