Earlier this morning, I watched a trailer for Fast & Furious 6, and I'm actually more excited to see that than I am for any of the other big summer films.

Actually, my most eagerly-awaited 2013 fare is the Olga Kurylenko double-header in April, when Terrence Malick's To the Wonder is released in theaters just one week before the sci-fi film, Oblivion. Those are not summer films, per se, though.

Richard Linklater's Before Midnight has potential, of course. I just hope that the two previous films see the light of day on Blu-ray first.

I'm just hoping The Grandmaster turns out to be better than some of the mixed early response.

I think we're all hoping for a "Before" Criterion set

I could imagine them waiting to release all three films in a set. Not sure, though.

Going off the grid for a couple days for an out-of-town trip. I'm running a 50K race tomorrow on mountain trails with weather predictions of freezing temperatures and constant rain. I'll probably have dreams about Letter Never Sent or The Naked Prey tonight.

John Carter is a wondrous interpretation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs books. It has the grand, sweeping, larger-than-life feel of the older live-action Disney movies, like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Treasure Island, or The Swiss Family Robinson, and it takes me back to the days of my childhood when I used to read those adventure stories under the cover with a flashlight after dark.
Glad to see someone else feels this way. I took the wife to this very apologetically, after reading lackluster reviews. But we both enjoyed it and the time flew. John Carter did in fact capture some of the Jules Verne era romantic scifi feel of many of ERB's books. Head and shoulders above an Armageddon. Too bad a poor title and muddled promotional campaign hobbled the release. Obviously I was under the covers with the flashlight, too.

I missed John Carter in the theaters (I don't really get to the theaters any more), but got the blu from redbox as soon as it came out. I liked it quite the bit, and will probably buy it when and if the price ever gets into my range. It reminded me of some of the pulp that I used to love reading, and I think that it is one movie that was ruined by reputation before people could really evaluate it on its merits.

I've been debating on blind buying Brazil, and figured to just get the Universal blu in from Netflix before deciding.. I don't know if it was the Benadryl I took right before watching it or what, but it was a mind-bending great watch. The humor was so dark, but felt little depressed afterwards. So much of the film spoke truths about the insanity we face in our present time.
I just got back from BB just looking around and found Brazil Criterion for $28 sticker price as opposed to what it rang up at $35 which is what their site says also. Others probably got better deals when Amazon had lower, but it's still fun to get a better deal at purchased time.
Anyways, waiting for On The Waterfront from Amazon, and have Badlands pre-ordered.. For now that'll do, of course until the next B&N sale.

I feel as if I'm the only person who didn't really like Brazil.

I also missed JOHN CARTER's theatrical run, but a friend who tends to prefer old movies over recent releases said it was a lot of fun so I gambled on buying the 3-D Blu-ray when it was marked down to 19.99 for Christmas.

I felt JOHN CARTER was reasonably entertaining overall, but (never having read the novels) it seemed like it was trying to cram in too many characters and plot threads without taking the time to explain why they were really there, and cutting out too much that would have enriched what they had, almost like a 132-minute abridgement of a TV miniseries. I think the film would have been more successful if it had concentrated on some of its major plot threads and enlarged them, rather than trying to do too much in too little screen time. The 3-D was nice, and the bonus features helped give a better perspective on their intentions, but the film should stand on its own, whether or not you've read the books.

Three or four great films at best 2011 was a much stronger year.

Nope, I am in the same camp.

I blind bought it about a month ago and have tried to watch it twice and have yet to make my way through it. It just seems so dated, cold and plain old boring. I felt nothing about any of the characters and thinking of just putting it on eBay or perhaps find someone willing to trade me another CC BluRay or 2 in its place. Really do not get the hype at all. It is my only CC blind buy regret I have made thus far...

Agreed. I was coming off with such a high after 2011 that really nothing could have compared. Even so, the past year was grim.

I think 2011 wasn't all that special. I mean, can you guys list some of your favorite films from that year because I'm not sure if I can even remember what came out.
