Dances is better. Goodfellas was great until the last 30 minute trainwreck documentary ("How to Avoid Imaginary Helicopters When You're High on Coke")

Its based on a true story and thats what happened. Nothing they could do - besides, how can you not like Henry running around while his brother stirs the sauce, mixing up coke, dropping guns off at Jimmys, and taking Lois to get her focking hat? C'mon man!

DWW had its moments but it seemed long just for the sake of being long. An editor would have come in handy.

Which version did you see, the theatrical version that won all the awards including Best Film Editing, or the one prepared as an ABC miniseries with many scenes that were rightfully cut placed back into it to stretch it out over two nights of broadcast television? The latter version - while not exactly disowned by Costner - was a version he states he had nothing to do with and that it was a "studio thing".

I'm still waiting for a US Blu-Ray release of the version Costner supervised -- not the "extended" version, but the theatrical version, which from where I sit is vastly superior.

Ralph Fiennes (Schindler's List) losing Supporting Actor to TL Jones (The Fugitive) Typical sympathy vote for not having won in the past.

and of course Shakespeare in Love winning over 4 other movies that were all far better than it was.

Tommy had one prior Oscar nomination 2 years before with JFK. He was never going to beat Jack Palance and I really doubt he won with the sympathy vote. If anything Finnes was so hissable as Goeth that he probably lost for just being so evil.

I have very little problem with those not nominated mostly, it's those that win, such as the afore mentioned Shakespear in Love, Chariots over Raiders, Fame beating Empire Strikes Back for best original score, same with Georgia Moroder winning for Midnight Express over Superman. Sigourney Weaver losing out to Marlee Matlin is understandable, though it's clear over time just how iconic her portrayal as Ripley was in this sequel.

Okay one oscar nomination snub. Alan Rickman, 1988, Die Hard. One of the greatest villains in film history. It's an unforgettable performance.

Should have won IMO...
LA Confidential > Titanic
Pulp Fiction > Forest Gump
Glory > Driving Miss Daisy (wasn't even nominated!)
Clint Eastwood > Al Pacino (Unforgiven vs. Scent of a Woman)
Ian McKellen for LOTR

I don't think it was a sympathy vote. Tommy Lee Jones was terrific in that movie. It's refreshing actually that a summer blockbuster won an acting Oscar over a Holocaust movie. Speaking of acting Oscars in 1993 that pissed me off, Tom Hanks getting Best Actor for Philadelphia was a travesty. I know he was the heavy favorite heading into that night, but any single one of those other actors nominated would've been a better choice. Hell, Hanks wasn't even the best actor in his own movie. Denzel gave a better performance.

I didn't have a problem with that one first because Basinger was surprisingly good in that role. And second because they had to reward that amazing cast with something. And as the lone acting nominee from L.A. Confidential, it was Basinger or zilch. In fact, that's probably a huge reason why she won.

If I'm not mistaken, Tommy Lee Jones was pretty much a lock to win that year.
