Just call it Knights of the Old Republic, st back, and start counting money. End the series with Palpatine learning the Dark Side's power to extend and create life, killing his master, and using his new powers on a slave woman to impregnate her with the future Anakin.

I used to think as you do, but now I understand why it had to be done that way, and Lucas did it intentionally. Making a Sith too powerful and last all 3 episodes in the prequel trilogy would overshadow Vader of the original trilogy as the greatest villain in the galaxy, even the Emperor is no match to him. Maul, Dooku & even Grievous were meant to be forgotten.

There is a need for it. Disney isn't just making new Star Wars movies. They are making Episode VII, VIII, and IX. Meaning, a new trilogy that builds off of and has direct ties to the events and characters in Episodes I - VI. I'm not saying Han, Luke, and Leia will be the stars of the new trilogy, but it's to be expected they'll have a role to play to concretely link the new trilogy to the classic trilogy. If Disney was simply making new generic Star Wars movies, you're right: there would be no need for prior characters/actors to make an appearance. But since they are continuing the established storyline of the past two trilogies, they need to use those same characters. How pissed would people have been if Obi-Wan wasn't in the prequels? Same conceit.

I don't think anyone saying Carrie needs to look how she looked like in the original trilogy, but she does need to look film presentable if she is going to be in the new ones and I would have no doubt that she would get back into movie shape for the role.

She'll get into shape, and besides, there is always Hollywood makeup.

Even though they were just fodder, I really enjoyed Maul and Grievous. I think they left their marks even if they were only in one film.

It's a no-win situation. I stopped reading the EU books when the prequels came out because i knew Lucasfilm wouldn't give a damn about them.
Ideally, I think eps VII-IX should adhere to the EU in the broadest strokes --
[Show spoiler]Han and Leia are married and have three Jedi kids, Luke is married to Mara Jade and has a son named Ben. Everything else is up for grabs.

The problem with the EU is that that it grew to become so complicated, encompassing hundreds (thousands?) of novels and comic books, that it became impossible for all but the most obsessive fans to enjoy.

I didn't really like either, they were both super filler to me to pass the time till someone more important stepped up to be the villain of the moment.

I thinks its very unlikely that we will see Mara ... if they go with Han and Leia being married (which I could see) I doubt they will have 3 kids and if they do the name will be changed (George Lucas "ordered" Anakin Solo be killed off) ... I think we may see ties to the EU (like courasaunt being used in episode 1) but for the most part it will be an original story ... I personally would rather see the child (son or daughter) of Luke be the new hero though

Pardon my ignorance, but hadn't they designed Coruscant way back when they were making the OT, but couldn't afford to put it on film, so it first appeared in novels, etc.?

That's how I remember it at least.

The idea of a "city planet" was floating around since Lucas was first working on Episode IV, but it was too expensive to ever film (first it was going to be Alderaan then an Imperial planet in ROTJ). Timothy Zahn named the seat of the Empire Coruscant and ran with the city planet idea. Then Lucas added it to the SE and the rest is history.

Dont even tease with that kind of crap - a joke like that isnt even funny. Its like screaming fire in a crowded theater...you just dont do it.
Not saying that Radcliffe and Stewart are great actors, but are they really any worse than Hamill, Fisher, Christensen and Portman? I think Radcliffe could do spoiled brat "I'm gonna' become a Sith if you don't make me a Jedi" better than Christensen and Stewart could deliver depression and "I don't know who you are any more" better than Portman. (I happen to think Portman is actually a good actress - she was just very poorly directed by Lucas). In the first Star Wars movie, Fisher puts on a fake English accent for some scenes and forgets it for most others.

As for those who think that Hamill and Fisher are too old and fat to be in the next movie, they can put them in robes and wigs and they'll look good enough if they don't have to do any action scenes. How many truly old people (aside from Yoda) did we see in the Star Wars movies? Not very many: one can make the case that people don't age well in the harsh environment of those times and places. In fact, you could build that into the plot: that Luke and Leia were once these great heroes, but peace has made them complacent and that they are not ready to fight a new threat and therefore their kids or Han's kids must take over with perhaps Luke and Leia still planning strategy. Luke and Leia's infirmity can be built into the plot - people actually do get old and aren't what they once were - ever see any old athletes or rock stars that got old and fat? Steven Stills was once a very good looking, thin guy.

Personally, as I've written before, I'd like a plot around it being discovered by the general population years after the fact that Vader was Luke's father and Luke and Leia are brought to trial, accused of actually having worked against the people and for the Empire. Maybe Luke is even being accused of being a Sith Lord. It has to be proven by their friends and/or kids that they are innocent. Maybe it's the equivalent of McCarthyism. Or maybe Luke is the last Jedi, living alone (as Kenobi once did) and everyone thinks he's nuts and an old senile fool (and maybe he is). And maybe the kids don't even know that Vader was their grandfather and it causes a break in the family when they find out - some siding with the old Empire or the Sith and some following the path of the Jedi.

City planet... cough... Trantor... cough...

The ideas been around forever. I thought I read once that the Death Star scene was meant to be Coruscant, but was changed, but that article seems to say different.

Edit: After reading the article again with my eyes open this time, it does say what I said. And it mentions Trantor. Hooray!
