Default Syfy's "Andromeda" Discussion (2000-2005)

In 2012 I completed every Star Trek series & movies which took me 11 months of my life lol. I just recently finished The X-Files and now finishing up the final episodes of the classic Battlestar Galactica series.

My viewing goal for 2013 is Andromeda, Babylon 5, V, and all of Stargate.

Andromeda is up next. Any fans here?

All I know is Hercules is in it and the Robot girl from Jason X/Tracy Vetters from the Forever Knight tv show.

I can barely remember Andromeda lol, it's been so long, I think it was like Farscape.

Stargate is a must though for sci-fi fans imo

I liked andromeda, and it has been awhile since I have watched an episode. I think you will love Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis, but the Universe isn't like those two and the first season is kind of tough to get through if expecting anything like thing other two series. But unfortunately it only made it to two seasons. I guess that is what happens when they try to expand a 3 year story to a 5 year and keep the same writers from the others and no try to spice it up a bit.

Is Andromeda on Netflix or anything streaming? I've only ever seen a few episodes myself and been curious.

Andromeda had the aesthetic, but Galaxy Quest did Andromeda better than Andromeda. Yea I remember I couldn't stomach too much of this. I may need to look back on it someday. I'm going through a good Blake's 7 (1978-82)blitz at the moment, quite enjoyable though I was keenly interested in this since the 80's.

Id love to collect Doctor Who as well.

And as posthumous Roddenberry estate-cleanup series made out of old dug-up proposal memos go to cash in on the name go, "Earth: Final Conflict" was better.
(Think the Vulcan/Human conspiracies from the first Enterprise season, taken a step farther...)

I mean, you'd think, during that whole 90's syndicated gold rush, SOMEONE would've tried to update "Assignment: Earth", but maybe Paramount still had a lock on it.

Start with the Tom Bakers, slip in a few Patrick Troughtons for chaser, and let everything flow from there.

Ahh that EFC did have some very good moments to it, I never got to see how it ended, I can only remember Zo'or with a more human appearance, some splice of other alien I guess.

Re-Doctor Who That really is the only era I am interested, up to Peter Davidson. I have the 5 Doctors tribute episode from 1983 on DVD. They are amazingly expensive DVD's here in NZ still.

I had a couple friends that really liked it, but I never thought the show was that great and that it got worse in later seasons.

Now I'm kinda pumped. I never expected it to surpass ST anyway.

Its a great sci fi series that does not take itself seriously (much like Stargate). Its fun plain and simple and does have some great episodes

Alright so I'm about 8 episodes in

So this is the storyline,

IN the future, 3 galaxies unite, they have an Army. 1 of the groups turn and attack the the other 2 (including it's army which has Hunt & Andromeda as lead), during the battle Andromeda is caught in a black hole, frozen for 300 years

300 years later, Andromeda is found, "unfrozen", and Hunt is now in a changed world (like if the Jem Hadar took over the Alpha Quadrant in Star Trek), so now he flies around trying to restore things the way they were?

It's got Kevin Sorbo aka Hercules so it can't be bad - can it? Need to give this a watch.

Farscape? Are you kidding? If you've seen Farscape you'd never compare it to Andromeda. They have nothing in common except a show in space. The first two seasons of Andromeda were great till they kicked Robert Wolfe off the show. It was rich with characters, history and complexity. Once they got rid of him ala half way through season 2 it became a run of the mill episodic, syndicated, boring ass show.
[Show spoiler]They got rid of Rem...ok, fine....I could deal with that. BUT....when Tyr left...the whole dynamic of what I liked in the show was completely gone.
I liked it being serialized to an extent and having complex characters and plot.... that shift was too jarring for me. I'd rather watch Lexx for incoherent crap and still be slightly enjoyable...

I don't hate Andromeda, but I don't like the direction it took post-season 2 and behind the scenes bs that took place.

I'm not really a Tyr fan so I'm not bothered.

I would not say "the way they were" but yeah he is a bit set in his ways so he uses what he knows. I see it more that the war created a collapse of civilisation which led to a dark ages and he is trying to rebuild a new civilization

But wouldn't there be some sort of Empire that would form after that war or at least some villains that would want to stop him?

not necesserily and not everywhere. Look at history, in 300BC Europe looked like

http://www.euratlas.net/history/europe/300/index.html

in 395 AD when Theodosius passed away he split the empire in two (east and west)

by 500 BC the western Roman empire (European part) collapsed and shattered into a lot of pieces
, some kingdom/empires grew and fell but there was anything that could truly match the Roman empire for Europe and it is why there are so many countries in Europe now. It is also the reason that dark ages lasted so long, war takes its toll on resources and knowledge.

As for the show directly, all I can say is just continue watching it.

I'm enjoying it. It took it's time with the 1st batch of episodes but now that I'm sorta used to the characters and everything I am liking it. I like to think of it as a Canadian Star Trek.

Dillon Hunt is cool. I just hate Kevin Sorbo's haircut.

Overall at this point I don't agree with Hunt's mission to restore the Commonwealth at all.. the universe as it is at that point doesn't seem too bad or like wars are going on. I find his mission a tad "selfish".
