Has it been confirmed that the EE blu-ray will be in 3D? I can't see why it shouldn't. Especially since Peter Jackson loads these things for the fans.

All the film footage was shot on 3D rigs, so I would be flabbergasted beyond belief if the EE was not released in 3D.

One of the things I really appreciated about the LOTR EE DVDs was that New Line offered a slip box for those that bought the films individually as they came out (which I did to get the great Sideshow Collectible figurines at BBY): That way, the "faithful" were honored at least enough that rather than having to repurchase the entire set boxed if they wanted that "on the shelf polish," they could get that nice, sturdy, attractive box for $5 shipped.

Because of the panoply of TE releases for AUJ (digis, etc) that's likely to continue with DOS and TABA, I seriously doubt that Warners would, or could, do that for the theatrical trilogy. BUT if the Hobbit EEs are all uniformly packaged, and it's likely they would be, it would be outstanding if Warners followed New Line's precedent and offered a mail-in for an outer box similar to the one that holds the three LOTR EE BDs. I'm sure that they'll release a Middle Earth Omnibus set in a full-scale Bag End replica which I won't buy. But I'm hoping (probably foolishly) that history will repeat itself and I can have a nice Hobbit EE BD trilogy box next to the LOTR EE BD trilogy box without a full-on repurchase.

I think I'm going to wait for a boxed edition of all Hobbit movies in extended edition to buy... if I can resist the urge of buying the individual ones. But extended is the way to go for me, no doubt.

How many discs could the extended edition possibly have?

2 Bluray discs for the extended edition 3D to be spread apart yet again.
1 disc for the extended edition 2D version of the film itself.
1 disc of special features
Possibly 2 discs for the extended edition on DVD.

A total of 6 discs all together that it could possibly have.

That makes sense, although they could release a Blu set and a DVD set. Will be interesting to see what happens, to say the least.

There's no way that it'll fit on one disk.
It'll be split over 2, just like the The Lord of the Rings films.
The Hobbit is longer than Fellowship Theatrical.

EDIT
****
ok, it's not, but it certainly felt like it was...
Maybe it's because i desperately needed to use the Restroom, and refused to go until it was over...
****
Still, I think that they will split the film across 2 disks for the Extended Cut.

I'm rather dumb when it comes to the technical aspects of the discs, but why wouldn't it? Jackson has said that the extended edition will bring it to around 3 hours, I thought. If that's the case, there are longer films on blu ray on a single disc.

Once again, I'm not familiar with encoding tech or anything so this isn't to be argumentative. It's just to make myself less ignorant.

It all depends on the Picture Quality and the Audio.
Plus however many different Audio Streams there are.
Plus Subtitles, Closed Captioning, Trivia Tracks... if any...
Menu design...
it adds up...

3D takes more space...see Titanic.

I think that hobbit Extended will make it onto 1 blu-ray disk. It will clock in at most at 195 mins. Return of the King theatrical is itself 200 mins long and fine on 1-blu-ray disk

Looks about right except I doubt they'll include DVDs keeping it down to 4 discs.

but just think, the regular release is on 2 discs for the 3d so it would make sense that the extended would be 2 discs for the 3d as well

I can't wait for this release! There is supposed to be 25 minutes of new footage in the film.

I wonder how many discs the release will have?

Not in this release. This is the same version we saw in cinemas. The Extended edition is the one that will have the extra footage, and that's not due out till the end of this year.

For the Extended Edition? No-one's sure at this point. But it will depend on whether you're getting the 2D or 3D version.

Here's what I'm hoping for:

If they release the 3D and 2D versions separately, probably four.

2 Discs for the Extended Edition
2 Discs for the Appendices

If they combine them, probably six.

2 Discs for the 3D Extended Edition
2 Discs for the 2D Extended Edition
2 Discs for the Appendices

If they make it a BR/DVD/UltraViolet Combo, probably eight.

2 BR Discs for the 3D Extended Edition
2 BR Discs for the 2D Extended Edition
2 DVD/UV Discs for the Extended Edition
2 BR Discs for the Appendices

The LOTR EE DVDs had 4 commentaries and two english tracks plus easter eggs. If this EE has multiple commentaries and easter eggs I have no doubt they will split the extended editions over two discs.

I personally rather change the disc after 1h30 (and take a bathroom/beer refill break in the process) and have top notch quality than to have 3 hours stuffed in a single disc at the expense of video and audio quality.

Has there been any information about what exactly these deleted scenes that will be included in the extended cut will be?
