Is Criterion releasing the Lloyd films the way they're releasing Chaplin's films one at a time? Or is Safety Last a one-off?

If we had access to that kind of info this thread would have half this many posts

No indication about that, so I wouldn't rule them out

I don't know, Mac

We will have to wait and see. I have the UK disc in my library so it will be very easy to compare when the U.S. release arrives.

Thanks. I look forward to reading your thoughts, then. :-)

I can't believe I missed all the great Fassbinder talk

On a more off-topic subject, I watched 4:44 Last Day on Earth and my God was I blown away. What a fantastic film, but definitely not for everyone. If you are curious, it's worth checking out.

Yeah mine came from BC too, weird.

I wouldn't hold any faith in that, as half their titles say they are verboten in Canada. Yet, I've always manged to buy them up here through Amazon Canada. P@t has also mentioned that a lot of the titles they claim won't ship to Quebec on Amazon Canada also end up shipping to Quebec, so the almighty dollar is more powerful than you want to believe.

Alambrista's another one I unfortunately couldn't get into. I feel bad about that, as that was one that doesn't seem to get too much love, as there are "bigger" films that often get talked about instead.

edit: I know, I know, I should be watching Sansho. However, Sansho's being saved for something larger than a 17" laptop. As I'm reviewing my wishlist, I'm not as fussy about the quality or screen size of the films, and thus I'm relying on places like Hulu (with commercials ever 5 minutes) and YouTube to view them.

WILD STRAWBERRIES - Quite interested, but I have yet to see ANY Bergman, so is this a good place to start? I have to be careful to choose one that will hook my wife... Recommendations appreciated.
Wild Strawberries or The Seventh Seal are both good films to start with but I'll recommend another: Summer With Monika. It was the first Bergman film I saw and it hooked me. (and my wife!)

Great - Thanks, I will add it to the wishlist (It's at its most expensive on Amazon right now, so hopefully it drops a little soon)

I did just order Kiss Me Deadly, Breathless and Wages of Fear.

I have seen the opening of KMD - Other than that, they are all blind buys, though Breathless was one of my wife's favourite films as a teenager, apparently.

Agree with Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries being a good start - it was for me. If you like them, check out (the long version of) Fanny & Alexander.

Nice to see Criterion are getting around to releasing WS finally - along with Badlands and Rashomon, it's just nice to get the talked about releases out of the way!

According to the features, we get three bonus shorts (Take a Chance, Young Mr. Jazz, His Royal Slyness), along with the usual documentaries aplenty.
The Lloyd estate's previous deal seems to have since fallen through, so they may be in with Criterion for the longer run. IF so, The Freshman is a given, and those seem to be the only two well-known enough to stand on their own. "Why Worry?" and "Never Weaken" are more likely to end up on an Eclipse box.

(And not to beat old grudges from last January, but Told Ya So--
NOW can we beat up all those tunnel-visioned fanboys who looked at the New Year's cartoon and said "Look, it's a clock and he's falling out of the building....It's Hudsucker Proxy! " ?)

Wow! One of my favorite films, and probably my most-wanted(and least expected) films on blu! Total shocker! Could not be more pleased.

Way OT, but love your avatar (and The Iron Giant).

EDIT: Okay, to keep this post a little Criterion-related ... I'm very happy to see the release of Safety Last. Definitely on my "to buy eventually" list.

Not a bad month at all - four pretty enthusiastic definites and one fairly intimidating maybe (holocaust films I can take, films that run several hours I can take...a nine hour holocaust film? it sounds very interesting but I'm not going to lie, that one's going to have an uphill climb between shelf and register).

Wild Strawberries looks very nice. Shoah is interesting as well, nice to se them do a big set like that. Although personally, I would've preferred The Decalogue if we're going to get a big multi-disc set, but that's just me. Things To Come looks interesting as well.

Thumbs up

Of course, Criterion's decision to release Things to Come has everything to do with my importing this title last week. The UK version looks pretty good as it is, so hopefully that bodes well for the Criterion version.

Great news about the Marketa Lazarova release. The Czech version, which is stunning, is going to be hard to top. This release, as Pro-B stated, will be the release of the year. If you appreciate Tarkovsky and Andrei Rublev, you will love this film.

Looks like a good amount of Best Buy stores have Badlands in-stock today, which is nice for those who have a handful of Reward Zone certificates from the Facebook promo.

Well it looks like my copies of Badlands and The Life And Death Of Colonel Blimp won't be here until tomorrow DESPITE having them both pre-ordered for a couple months with Prime's Two-Day Shipping that said I was guaranteed delivery by today.

Wow, really surprised Prime didn't come through for you with release-day delivery. I'd definitely complain to customer service with hopes of receiving some sort of credit. After all, they are failing to provide a service they guarantee, for which you are paying a premium annual fee for. With how frequently you order from them a small credit would be the least they could do
