Ian McKellen has mentioned a scene which he apparently suggested and helped write, which involves Gandalf meeting Bilbo when he's a young Hobbit at play (by way of explanation of how they met and how Gandalf felt Bilbo could be the one to suggest for the dwarves' quest). It apparently involves Gandalf conjuring up a toy-sized dragon for Bilbo to play with (hence foreshadowing Smaug in the story). And Peter Jackson mentioned more scenes with Barry Humphries as the Goblin King, which to be honest makes me wonder whether that sequence really needs to be or can stand being extended. But I'm willing to take what we get. Interestingly, McKellen insisted that the Extended Edition is already complete and ready to go, which suggests the holding off on its release until the end of the year is purely a marketing decision. |

More and more, I'm betting that I'll stick with the theatrical cuts for this trilogy instead of the extended editions. It's already stretched enough. |

Yeah, I get where you're coming from. Peter Jackson seems to be turning this film into more of a compendium history of Middle Earth than simply the story of Bilbo's one big Adventure.

Right now, I stand by my claim that this does NOT need to be extended because it already feels stretched. But I know when an extended version comes out, I'll get the sweats and night terrors at the thought of not buying it. So it's safe to assume I'll own both the theatrical and extended editions of The Hobbit, just like I do for LotR. As for today, my 3D copy is out for delivery.

Yep. Bilbo will still be the focus but he's definitely going to fill it out so when we get to the Fellowship of the Ring, the audience is prepared for the War of the Ring.

IF there is a 3D Extended Cut, why does everyone assume it will be sold with the 2D?
Does anyone think that they might relase the Extended Cut as 2 seperate Editions? If they do it this way: Set 1 - 3D only Extended Set 2 - 2D only Extended What are the chances of them leaving stuff out (Special Features) from different versions? |

The reason the Extended Edition isn't out right now is because they're going to use it to hype Part Two. If they need more time to finish the post-production on the extended edition, that's fine, but then they could have waited to release the theatrical edition, if they wanted to release all versions at the same time. They chose to space them apart, as part of the marketing. Nothing wrong with that, but I think it's misleading to suggest that the reason the EE is not out alongside the theatrical version is purely because of the extra time needed to finish the EE. There's a bit more to it than that.

There's no IF about it. The extended cut will be released in 3D. WB is a big supporter of 3D on blu. Last edited by WorkShed; 03-19-2013 at 02:43 PM. |

They are hard at work putting together extended editions for existing films in the middle of finishing the theatrical versions for the next. This is much harder than before since Weta is becoming a huge effects powerhouse and are working on much more than just Peter Jackson's projects. |

I was just saying that a date of March for the EE might have been too early. Certainly by the summer it could be done I would have thought. Possibly they could have done what they did with the FOTR and TTT and release the TC in August along with the EE, but realistically this is never going to happen when there's money to be made. |

Bought the 2D theatrical cut today, will own the 3D cut when the EE is released. Sounds like the logical way for me.
As for the time it takes to put these EE out, remember that on top of finishing the EE cut all those extras need to be produced. Most of the interviews are filmed AFTER the film is released. |

I know - I wasn't saying that. I was referring to the DVDs of the theatrical cuts of FOTR and TTT being released in August, not the EE's. I was making the point that it might have been more viable to release the TC simultaneous with the EE of The Hobbit: AUJ in August, but probably not as early as March.

You are also making the assumption that the extended cuts are ready to ship in August, which is not true. They aren't just waiting for a prime release marketing time, they are doing a lot of work. |

I think there needs to be some middle ground between those who think they can easily release the EE today and those who argue that its release at the end of the year is purely because they need 11 months to work on it. Neither seem completely plausible to me. Last edited by BarnDoor; 03-19-2013 at 05:33 PM. |
