Default Memento region 2 blu ray - Thoughts?

Ok, I think i've heard that there are a few Memento transfers around and that some are better than others. I want the BEST version of the film, and I heard that I may not be able to get it as the best version is supposedly on region 1, only.

That said, I don't know how the region 2 version compares to the original region 1 version. Is the region 2 version bad? I mean, is it not true to Nolan's original vision?? Is the improvement in this anniversary edition any better than the region 2 version? It's my favourite film of all time, and I only want the best and most faithful version possible.

Advice very much appreciated.

Hi,
First off, Region 1 & 2 are DVD conventions. Blu Ray uses Region A, B & C.
I've had both versions.
I don't think the Region B (which I believe is the same as the first Region A release) is particularly awful but the anni edition is noticeably better.
If you must have the absolute best available, I recommend getting a multi region player. You really won't regret it.
I live in the UK but virtually my whole collection consists of US discs as I find them generally superior in more ways than one.

As far as I'm aware, there really isn't much difference between the UK and US releases on this title. I own the UK version and it's an incredible transfer, with great colour distinction and deep blacks.

Some US releases are better than UK releases, but it's also the other way around some of the time, too. It all depends on what you're looking for, what you're willing to pay and how much of a perfectionist you are towards these things. I'd much prefer to pay £6 for a UK release that had slightly poorer AQ than £15 for the US release which has slightly better, but there would be members on here who'd get the US one.

I guess it depends on your perspective but having owned both I would say the difference is huge.....

Is that in PQ or AQ?

PQ.
I can't say I noticed any difference in AQ but according to the thread linked above, some experienced a pitch issue with the UK release.
I don't know if the audio track varied at all between releases.
I'd be disappointed with a lossy soundtrack but when it comes to bit-rates within a HD track, I can't say I could spot a difference even if there was one

I have the most recent UK and US releases and while I prefer the look of the UK transfer as well as all the SE DVD extras being ported over, the audio has major problems. The pitch is off and sounds too low. The best way to tell is to compare the David Bowie song over the end credits, but it's there throughout the entire film.

I still held onto the UK Blu-ray since I want the extra features, but whenever I watch the movie, it'll be the US disc, warts and all.

Yeah, the audio on the UK release bugged the hell out of me, as did the new colour scheme on the US disc. So, I bought the German release for buttons, which is the same transfer as the UK, but with a non-botched soundtrack.

This is where I thought the problem lay - in the AQ. Admittedly, I've only seen a small portion of the US release at my friend's house, but it seemed to be on par with the transfer I have on the UK release. I've never noticed the AQ problems that much, just on the odd occasion, so I probably won't end up re-buying another version.

Hmm, when you guys are comparing the US transfer to the UK one, are you comparing the ANNIVERSARY edition US transfer to the UK one or the old problematic US version to the UK one? I think i'm going to take some advice and buy the German version. Anyone know where I can buy it for 'peanuts'?

I also want to get Gattaca but that's hard to get for less than a tenner.

I've been holding off buying this film (one of my favourites) since I heard the Anniversary edition was coming out.

Do you guys recon I'm wasting my time hoping for a Region B release and the Anniversary edition?

From what I understand, The Anniversary edition isn't even true the threatrical print of the film, despite the gimmicky 'as supervised by Nolan' tag. It's apparently significantly brighter. The region b version is meant to look as good but as bright, I think. Not sure.

Are you just making this up?

The answers are all in the thread linked above.....
To summarise:
The first release was the bare bones US version which wasn't bad but by today's standards doesn't really cut it.
The second release was the UK version which used the same master as the original US version but with improved PQ. Audio had problems.
The third release was the US anniversary edition which used a new master and included extras.
How each person perceives the differences between editions will obviously vary but having owned all three versions as they were released, IMO the latest US edition is by far the best version available. And it can picked up for about £7 :-)

Tried buying the german release on german ebay, but for some reason I can't make a transaction. Somebody told me that the pitch problem on the UK blu ray was resolved. Can anybody confirm this?

Don't worry guys, brought the german blu ray for a tenner. I just want a strong presentation that's as close to Nolan's intentions as possible, so i opted for the german release. WIll give me verdict when it arrives.

Hey guys, so I ordered the German Memento blu ray from some geezer off ebay. I had to persuade him to send it to me as originally he set it to send off within Germany. According to ebay, the blu ray was supposed to arrive no later than April 6th. It's now the 11th. I've contacted him saying the delivery is late and he hasn't responded at all ):

Should I be worried?

The eBay delivery estimates are not too bad but they don't account for anything that can happen on the way, especially with international delivery like this. Give it another couple of days, send another couple of messages to the seller stating your intent if the item doesn't arrive, and then open a dispute if nothing shows up.

Regardless of the bad press surrounding eBay, there aren't many sellers on there that are out to scam people, so don't worry too much about that. Disputes are quite a powerful way of getting sellers to respond, and you'll get your refund whatever happens -- either from the seller or from eBay themselves.

EDIT: Save all your correspondence from both you and the seller (if they reply!) in order to prove to eBay that you were trying to get in contact and weren't overly confrontational or anything.

Wow, thanks a lot, mate. I do feel a bit more reassured having read your post. I've also just checked my mail and it seems like he is suggesting that it may take up to take weeks for it to get to me as it's done internationally. So i'm just going to try and remain patient and not get my knickers in a twist.

I've saved all the stuff between us and my payment receipt and the like just to be on the safe side. It's just that for so long I avoided ebay and stuff because I was always over worried about being scammed as you say, but you're right, people would have to go through a crap load of effort to just scam for 10 quid hear and there.

Again, I thank you for your reassurance.
